Prudence M. Rice, Don S. Rice - The Kowoj, Identit y, Migration, and Geopolitics in Late Postclassic Peten, Guatemala (2009).jpg

All History - Prudence M. Rice, Don S. Rice - The Kowoj, Identity, ...Geopolitics in Late Postclassic Peten, Guatemala 2009.jpg

Neighbors of the better-known Itza in the central Petén lakes region of Guatemala, the Kowoj Maya have been studied for little more than a decade. The Kowoj: Identity, Migration, and Geopolitics in Late Postclassic Petén, Guatemala summarizes the results of recent research into this ethno-political group conducted by Prudence Rice, Don Rice, and their colleagues.

Chapters in The Kowoj address the question "Who are the Kowoj?" from varied viewpoints: archaeological, archival, linguistic, ethnographic, and bioarchaeological. Using data drawn primarily from the peninsular site of Zacpetén, the authors illuminate Kowoj history, ritual components of their self-expressed identity, and their archaeological identification. These data support the Kowoj claim of migration from Mayapán in Yucatán, where they were probably affiliated with the Xiw, in opposition to the Itza. These enmities extended into Petén, culminating in civil warfare by the time of final Spanish conquest in 1697.

The first volume to consider Postclassic Petén from broadly integrative anthropological, archaeological, and historical perspectives, The Kowoj is an important addition to the literature on late Maya culture and history in the southern lowlands. It will be of particular interest to archaeologists, historians, ethnohistorians, art historians, and epigraphers.

Le. A. Clarkson, E. Margaret Crawford - Feast and Famine, A History of Food in Ireland 1500-1920 (20 02).jpg

Feast and Famine traces the history of food and famine in Ireland from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century. It looks at what people ate and drank, and how this changed over time. The authors explore the economic and social forces which lay behind these changes as well as the more personal motives of taste, preference, and acceptability. They analyze the reasons why the potato became a major component of the diet for so many people during the eighteenth century as well as the diets of the middling and upper classes. The authors also look at the relationship between the supply of food and the growth of the population and then finally, and unavoidably in any history of the Irish and food, the issue of famine, examining first its likelihood and then its dreadful reality when it actually occurred.

Dilwyn Jones - Ancient Egyptian Boats (1995).jpg

Drawing on archaeological and literary evidence, Dilwyn Jones examines the importance of the boat in Egyptian ritual and belief as well as in everyday life. The sun god was thought to travel across the sky in a solar boat, and Egyptians believed that the deserving might join the god Osiris in his divine bark after death. Boats played an important part in funerary ritual; models were often placed in tombs to provide the deceased with safe passage through the "winding waterway" in the underworld. Also, boats are frequently depicted in tomb-painting. The Nile River has always been a vital transport artery for Egypt, and boats the principal means of travel. Early papyrus skiffs gradually gave way to wooden craft of increasing size and sophistication, ranging from fishing boats and barges to seagoing warships, splendid ships of state, and enormous obelisk barges used to transport stone to temples and monuments. Dilwyn Jones traces the development of the different types of boat and the techniques of their construction through the Old, Middle, and New Kingdom periods.

Sheila Lecoeur- Mussolini's Greek Island, Fascism and the Italian Occupation of Syros in World War I I (2009).jpg

A powerful and unique study of the realities and long-term impact of occupation, Mussolini’s Greek Island reveals the Italian dictator’s imperial vision, the mechanisms of Italian occupation and its tragic consequences. The small island of Syros is a vital entry-point illuminating Italian imperialism--its ethos, fascist connection, pretension and administrative achievements, marred by famine. Here Lecoeur examines the devastating effects of war and occupation on the local community--starvation, corruption and survival--and, drawing on local archives and interviews with survivors, offers new insight into this crucial but little known episode. Enriching our understanding of Mussolini’s hegemonic visions and the mechanisms of occupation, a key issue of our times, this ground-breaking book will appeal to scholars of fascism, World War II and military occupation in general.

Tabea Alexa Linhard - Fearless Women in the Mexica n Revolution and the Spanish Civil War (2005).jpg

In this first book-length study of the role women played in two of the most momentous revolutions of the twentieth century, Tabea Alexa Linhard provides a comparative analysis of works on the Mexican Revolution (circa 1910-1919) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Linhard was inspired by the story of the "Trece Rosas," thirteen young women who, after the Spanish Civil War ended with the Nationalists' victory, were executed. One of the women, Julia Conesa, was particularly influential. In a letter she wrote to her mother a few hours before she faced the firing squad, she said, "Do not allow my name to vanish in history." This is Linhard's attempt to respond to Julia's last request. Although female figures such as the soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution and the milicianas of the Spanish Civil War are abundant in writings about revolution and war, they are often treated as icons, myths, and symbols, displacing the women's particular and diverse experiences. Linhard maintains a focus on these women's stories, which until now - when presented at all - have usually been downplayed in literary canons, official histories, and popular memories. She addresses several existing gaps in studies of the intersections of gender, revolution, and culture in both the Mexican and the Spanish contexts. The book is grounded in transatlantic studies, an emerging field that bridges disciplinary boundaries between peninsular studies and Latin American studies. In this case, the connection between the Mexican Revolution and the Spanish Civil War is a natural consequence of the disjointed conditions out of which arose the cultural texts in which fearless women appear.

Martin Heidegger - German Existentialism (1965).jpg

The title of this 38 page collection is misleading, since neither Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), nor any other prominent German philosopher, ever wished to be called "existentialist." Grossly incomplete and poorly translated, it seems it had been intended to incite tabloid-like feelings, rather than serve the scholarly community (not to mention its strong cover design). As such, one should avoid it as a serious reference, unless matched with other publications of Heidegger's writing of the same period for accuracy-- the headache avoidable by avoiding this piece, in the first place. Its sole value is in the date of its publication: 1965 -- more than two decades prior to Victor Farias' 1987 *Heidegger et le nazisme* (1989 Eng trans. Paul Burrell and Gabriel R. Ricci, as *Heidegger and Nazism*). While *German Existentialism* was passed unnoticed in the U.S., *Heidegger et la nazisme* brought outrage among Heidegger supporters in Europe (more balanced, sympathetic reactions by Gadamer, Derrida, Levinas, Lowith, and Muller, in addition to Heidegger's own postwar defense, are included in Gunther Neske and Emil Keterring's excellent collection: *Antwort Martin Heidegger im Gesprach;* Eng trans. Lisa Harris and Joachim Neugraoschel, as *Martin Heidegger and National Socialism,* 1990). In view of these and numerous books and journal articles on this topic, this book's sole value, as suggested above, is for its being a forerunner in this language. I have kept a copy in my shelf. It does not occupy much space, after all.

Vina A. Lanzona - Amazons of the Huk Rebellion, Ge nder, Sex, and Revolution in the Philippines (2009 ).jpg

Labeled “Amazons” by the national press, women played a central role in the Huk rebellion, one of the most significant peasant-based revolutions in modern Philippine history. As spies, organizers, nurses, couriers, soldiers, and even military commanders, women worked closely with men to resist first Japanese occupation and later, after WWII, to challenge the new Philippine republic. But in the midst of the uncertainty and violence of rebellion, these women also pursued personal lives, falling in love, becoming pregnant, and raising families, often with their male comrades-in-arms.
Drawing on interviews with over one hundred veterans of the movement, Vina A. Lanzona explores the Huk rebellion from the intimate and collective experiences of its female participants, demonstrating how their presence, and the complex questions of gender, family, and sexuality they provoked, ultimately shaped the nature of the revolutionary struggle.

Austin Woolrych - Britain in Revolution, 1625-1660 (2004).jpeg

This is the definitive history of the English Civil War, set in its full historical context from the accession of Charles I to the Restoration of Charles II. These were the most turbulent years of British history and their reverberations have been felt down the centuries. Throughout the middle decades of the seventeenth century England, Scotland, and Ireland were convulsed by political upheaval and wracked by rebellion and civil war. The Stuart monarchy was in abeyance for twenty years in all three kingdoms, and Charles I famously met his death on the scaffold. Austin Woolrych breathes life back into the story of these years, the sweep of his prose buttressed by the authority of a lifetime's scholarship. He captures the drama and the passion, the momentum of events and the force of contingency. He brilliantly interweaves the history of the three kingdoms and their peoples, gripping the reader with the fast-paced yet always balanced story.

Christo Howgego - Ancient History from Coins (1995 ).jpg

Coins are a rich source of information for the ancient historian; yet too often historians are uneasy about using them as evidence because of the special problems attached to their interpretation. Ancient History from Coins demystifies this specialized subject and introduces students to the techniques, methods, problems and advantages of using coins in the study of ancient history.

Christopher Howgego shows through numerous examples how the character, patterns and behavior of coinage bear on major historical themes. Covering the period from the invention of coinage (c. 600 B.C.) until the reign of Diocletian, this study examines topics ranging from state finance and economic policy to imperial domination and political propaganda through coin types.

Christopher A. Snyder - The Britons (2003).jpg

This book provides a fascinating and unique history of the Britons from the late Iron Age to the late Middle Ages. It draws on both archaeological and written evidence to trace the development of the distinct culture of the Britons that survived nearly four centuries of Roman rule and has been revived and celebrated by generations ever since.
The book:

describes the life and culture of the Britons before, during and after Roman rule
covers the revival of Iron Age practices within a Christian context, typified by the work of Saint Patrick
examines the figures of King Arthur and Merlin and the evolution of a powerful national mythology
proposes a new theory on the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain and the establishment of separate Brittonic kingdoms
gives an account of the Viking and Norman invasions and their effect on the Britons
reveals the origins of The Brittonic language and its segmentation into Breton, Cornish and Welsh
The book also discusses the revivals of interest in British culture and myth over the centuries, from Renaissance antiquarians to modern day Druids.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 424 - Philip Jowett - The Chi nese Army 1937-49, World War II and Civil War (200 5).jpg

Although the Chinese contribution to Allied victory in World War II is often ignored, China fought the Japanese Empire for far longer than any other belligerent nation. By the time that the Sino-Japanese War became absorbed into the wider conflict at the end of 1941, Chinese armies had already suffered huge casualties and half the country had been lost. By fighting on with Allied support, China tied down a million Japanese troops. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, China was immediately plunged back into civil war between Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists and Mao Tse-tung’s Communists; and the latter’s victory in 1949 changed the world for the rest of the 20th century and beyond.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 421 - Ian Heath - The Sikh Ar my 1799-1849 (2005).jpg

The beginning of the 19th century saw the rise of a remarkable Sikh leader in the Punjab province of north-west India. Unifying the feudal rulers under his authority, the conquering Maharaja Ranjit Singh pursued campaigns of expansion for nearly 40 years, creating for the purpose a new regular army on the Western model. His death in 1839 found the frontiers of Sikh and British power in confrontation; in the 1840s the inevitable trial of strength brought British crown and East India Company troops into battle against the most formidable Indian army they ever faced. Its story is told here in fascinating detail, illustrated with rare early paintings and with colourful reconstructions of Punjabi regular soldiers and feudal warriors.

Jorgen Laessoe - People of Ancient Assyria (1963).jpg

AS Assyria merely a more brutal, more uncivilized and less interesting offshoot of the culture created by Sumerians and
Babylonians in Southern Mesopotamia at the dawn of history? Do the countless Assyrian reliefs that fill our museums give a
complete picture of the phenomenon that was Assyria? Was the contribution of this people to world culture merely an
incredibly effective military organization? Is it a true picture of Assyria that the reliefs and annals give us, with their
presentation of war chariots, archers, battering-rams surrounding besieged cities, the punishment of prisoners of war, and the
triumphal march of the Assyrian army through the realms of the Near East? Have we no evidence of the human element behind
this phenomenon? How far may we rely on the Biblical descriptions of the cruelty of the Assyrian armies and the depravity of
Assyrian cities? How are we, who can look back on the incredible events of the European wars of religion, on the conduct of
Europeans towards the Indians of America, and on man's recent treatment of his fellow-man, to judge these Assyrians?
