All History - J. E. Kaufmann, H. W. Kaufmann, Tomasz Idzikowski - F...aginot Line and French Defenses in World War II 2005.jpg

The Maginot Line was the last great gun-bearing line of subterranean forts built before World War II. Although it acquired an unjustified reputation as a white elephant, the Maginot Line fulfilled the role for which it was built, allowing the French High Command the opportunity to mass its forces and counter the German invasion. Unfortunately, the French leadership failed to make the most of its assets, with the resulting disastrous outcome. During the 1920s, the French High Command formulated a number of offensive plans to strike at Germany, but by the end of the decade, it switched to defensive plans because of a lack of manpower. Work thus began on the Maginot Line and on other fortifications such as the French Mareth Line in North Africa and the heavy naval coastal defense batteries in Bizerte (Tunisia) and Toulon (France). The authors conclude that the Maginot Line offered the French High Command many opportunities from September 1939 until May 1940. They blame a failed French military doctrine for taking the initiative away from subordinates, laying the groundwork for the disastrous events of 1940 that left the French High Command paralyzed while German forces broke through the weakly held Ardennes.

Alistair Black;Dave Muddiman;Helen Plant - The Ear ly Information Society (2007).jpg

Whether termed the 'network society', the 'knowledge society' or the 'information society', it is widely accepted that a new age has dawned, unveiled by powerful computer and communication technologies. Yet for millenia humans have been recording knowledge and culture, engaging in the dissemination and preservation of information. In "The Early Information Society", the authors argue for an earlier incarnation of the information age, focusing upon the period 1900-1960. In support of this they examine the history and traditions in Britain of two separate but related information-rich occupations - information management and information science - repositioning their origins before the age of the computer and identifying the forces driving their early development. "The Early Information Society" offers an historical account which questions the novelty of the current information society. It will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners in the library and information science field, and for sociologists and historians interested in the information society.

Howard Wolf, Ralph Wolf - Rubber, A Story of Glory and Greed (2009).jpg

History, war, bloodshed and even romance ... it's all contained in this Classic Rapra Reprint! The book is targeted at the general reader, it's both informative and entertaining. It will also be interesting to students of the history of science, as well as to those who work with rubber on a day-to-day basis and those who would like to know more about the background of the rubber that they are working with. Rubber - A Story of Glory and Greed was the first attempt at a comprehensive history of rubber, when it was first published in 1936. This imive book is a popular account of rubber and covers its history, background, how it was discovered and how it grows, the scandal of its exploitation, the big business of rubber, foreign and domestic, the first attempts to make synthetic rubber, rubber invention and research, and manufacturing of products using rubber. When this book was first written it was felt that there was a need for a general history of rubber as the modern world was so dependent upon rubber for transportation, communications and electric power. We are still dependent on rubber in today's world and so this book is still of great value to all involved in the industry.

Gregory C. Chirichigno - Debt-Slavery in Israel an d the Ancient Near East (1995).jpg

This original study concerns itself with the manumission laws of Exodus 20, Deuteronomy 15 and Leviticus 25. It begins with the social background to debt slavery and the socioeconomic factors encouraging the rise of debt slavery in Mesopotamia. After a comparative analysis of the Mesopotamian and biblical material Chirichigno examines the social background to debt slavery in Israel, the various slave laws in the Pentateuch (in order to delimit the chattel-slave laws from the debt-slave laws), and the biblical manumission laws themselves.

Peter Coss, Maurice Keen - Heraldry, Pageantry and Social Display in Medieval England (2002).jpg

Medieval culture was intensely visual. Although this has long been recognised by art historians and by enthusiasts for particular media, there has been little attempt to study social display as a subject in its own right. And yet, display takes us directly into the values, aspirations and, indeed, anxieties of past societies. In this illustrated volume a group of experts address a series of interrelated themes around the issue of display. Among the themes are family and lineage, social distinction and aspiration, ceremony and social bonding, and the expression of power and authority. The objects studied include monumental effigies, brasses, stained glass, rolls of arms, manuscripts, jewels, plate, seals and coins. PETER COSS is Professor of Medieval History, Cardiff University. MAURICE KEEN is Emeritus Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. Contributors: MAURICE KEEN, DAVID CROUCH, PETER COSS, CAROLINE SHENTON, ADRIAN AILES, FRÉDÉRIQUE LACHAUD, MARIAN CAMPBELL, BRIAN AND MOIRA GITTOS, NIGEL SAUL, FIONN PILBROW, CAROLINE BARRON, JOHN WATTS.

Barbara J. Shapiro - A Culture of Fact, England, 1 550-1720 (2000).jpg

Barbara J. Shapiro traces the surprising genesis of the "fact," a modern concept that, she convincingly demonstrates, originated not in natural science but in legal discourse. She follows the concept's evolution and diffusion across a variety of disciplines in early modern England, examining how the emerging "culture of fact" shaped the epistemological assumptions of each intellectual enterprise. Drawing on an astonishing breadth of research, Shapiro probes the fact's changing identity from an alleged human action to a proven natural or human happening. The crucial first step in this transition occurred in the sixteenth century when English common law established a definition of fact which relied on eyewitnesses and testimony. The concept widened to cover natural as well as human events as a result of developments in news reportage and travel writing. Only then, Shapiro discovers, did scientific philosophy adopt the category "fact." With Francis Bacon advocating more stringent criteria, the witness became a vital component in scientific observation and experimentation. Shapiro also recounts how England's preoccupation with the fact influenced historiography, religion, and literature--which saw the creation of a fact-oriented fictional genre, the novel.

Kathlyn Gay, Martin Gay - World War I (1994).jpg

The serviceably written texts are interwoven with excerpts from letters, diaries, and newspaper accounts. As history curricula increasingly require primary-source materials, these titles should be useful in that regard. Each one begins with maps of the respective areas of conflict that include timelines of major events. Tables of contents, source notes, lists of further reading, and indexes make the books suitable for research. Pertinent black-and-white photographs appear throughout. Although the treatments are extremely superficial, these titles may be just right for students wanting general historical outlines.

Victor Houliston - Catholic Resistance in Elizabet han England (2007).jpg

Amongst ecclesiastical historians, there has been increased interest in English Catholicism over the past twenty years as a result of the re-evaluation of religious conflicts in early modern England, especially the role of the Jesuits. Speculation about Shakespeare's Catholicism has focused the attention of literary scholars on the experience of Elizabethan Catholics. This book bridges the gap between historical and political studies of the career of the Jesuit Robert Persons on the one hand and literary studies of Shakespeare and other authors, by concentrating on Persons' contribution as a writer to the polemical culture of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Offering a study of the writing career of Robert Persons, leader of the Elizabethan Jesuits, seen as an apostolate as well as a polemical contestation, this book relates Persons' interventions in various controversies during the period 1580-1610 to the formative purposes of the "Christian Directory" (1582), his famous and phenomenally successful work of devotion. This book was originally known as the "Book of Resolution", which also refers to Persons' indefatigability as a writer. The study makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the polemical context of post-Reformation Catholicism in England, and to the Jesuit notion of the 'apostolate of writing'.

Mark Frankland - Radio Man, the remarkable rise a nd fall of C.O. Stanley (2002).jpg

Charles Stanley turned PYE Radio into a multinational company with thirty thousand employees that contributed to Britain's victory in World War II. PYE Radio went on to become a world leader in mobile communications, helping shape the modern media age. However, by 1966 Stanley had lost both his company and his reputation. This researched text is written within the broad context of the political, technological and business changes of the time, and shows how a very ambitious businessman was brought down by the qualities that made him so successful.

Mark Rose - Authors and Owners, The Invention of C opyright (1995).jpg

The notion of the author as the creator and therefore the first owner of a work is deeply rooted both in our economic system and in our concept of the individual. But this concept of authorship is modern. Mark Rose traces the formation of copyright in eighteenth-century Britain--and in the process highlights still current issues of intellectual property. Authors and Owners is at once a fascinating look at an important episode in legal history and a significant contribution to literary and cultural history.

Alfred S. Bradford - With Arrow, Sword, and Spear, A History of Warfare in the Ancient World (2000).jpg

Most studies of ancient warfare focus only on the Greeks and the Romans, but this sweeping study covers the whole of the ancient world from Greece and Rome to the Near East, then eastward to Parthia, India, and China. Bradford transports the reader into the midst of ancient battles behind such great leaders as Thutmose III, Ashurbanipal, Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar, and the First Emperor of China. He details the rise and fall of empires, the role of leadership, and the development of tactics and strategy. One sees the clash of peoples: nomads against agricultural societies, infantry against cavalry, as well as the greatest technological change in history--the combination of the composite bow and the chariot.

Peter Fritzsche - Life and Death in the Third Reic h (2008).jpg

University of Illinois historian Fritz (Germans into Nazis) effectively takes up one of the key controversies surrounding the Third Reich: to what extent were the German people accomplices of the regime? Over the years, the answers have ranged widely. Daniel Goldhagen's argument that the annihilation of the Jews was what the German people had always wanted has never persuaded specialists. Others have argued that the German people were either manipulated and deceived by, or converted to, Nazism. Fritzsche provides a more nuanced argument that the Nazis were quite successful in winning the people's support, but it took time and effort. He cites diaries showing that individuals had to examine how they could become reconciled, or converted, to National Socialism. The fabled Volksgemeinschaft—people's community—was not mere propaganda but had a powerful allure that drew Germans into the Nazi orbit. Fritzsche mines diaries and letters written by the famous and well-placed as well as the unknown, to show that the prospects of German grandeur and unity resonated deeply with many people, even when it meant a hugely destructive war and the genocide of the Jews. Fritzsche offers a significant interpretation of Nazism and the German people, and writes with a vibrancy that is not often found in studies of the Third Reich.

J. Patrick Coby - Thomas Cromwell, Machiavellian S tatecraft and the English Reformation (2009).jpg

Thomas Cromwell, chief architect of the English Reformation, served as minister of Henry VIII from 1531 to 1540, the period during which more political and religious reform was accomplished than at any other time in Henry's thirty-seven-year reign. This biography_the first in a generation and the only one now in print_looks at his work and achievements during this period, and includes earlier and more critical assessments that view Cromwell as a disciple of Machiavelli.
