G.R. Berridge - British Diplomacy in Turkey, 1583 to the present (2009).jpg

This book describes the evolution of the component elements of the British Embassy in Turkey up to the First World War. It then explains why, without changing radically except in its communications, it remained indispensable to British diplomacy in Turkey afterwards.

All History - Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon - Turning Points of the Iris...ligence, and the Cost of Indifference, 1912-1921 2007.jpg

In his exploration of the use of intelligence in Ireland by the British government from the onset of the Ulster Crisis in 1912 to the end of the Irish War of Independence in 1921, Grob-Fitzgibbon analyzes the role that intelligence played during those critical nine years. He argues that within that period, the British government lost power in Ireland because it failed to utilize the intelligence it received. Through its indifference, the British government contributed to the turning points of the Irish Revolution, and allowed a bloody guerrilla war to develop that was far from inevitable.

Alok Yadav - Before the Empire of English, Literat ure, Provinciality, and Nationalism in Eighteenth- Century Britain (2004).jpg

All History - Alok Yadav - Before the Empire of English, Literature..., and Nationalism in Eighteenth-Century Britain 2004.jpg

Before the Empire of English offers a broad re-examination of eighteenth-century British literary culture, centered around issues of language, nationalism, and provinciality. It revises our tendency to take for granted the metropolitan centrality of English-language writers of this period and shows, instead, how deeply these writers were conscious of the inherited marginality of their literary tradition in the European world of culture. The book focuses attention on crucial but largely overlooked aspects of eighteenth-century English literary culture: the progress of English topos since the death of Cowley and the cultural aspirations and anxieties it condenses; the concept of the republic of letters and its implications for issues of cultural centrality and provinciality; and the importance of cultural nationalist emphases in "Augustan" poetics in the context of these concerns about provinciality. The book examines imperial aspirations and imaginings in the English literary culture of the period, but it shows how such aspirations are responses to provincial anxieties more so than they are marks of imperial self-assurance. In doing so, the book offers a way of understanding the resonances between the cultural politics of the postcolonial world and those of the earlier history of the English tradition itself.

All History - Anthony Pagden, Elizabeth Sauer, Balachandra Rajan - ...istorical and Literary Investigations, 1500-1900 2004.jpg

Filling a major gap in historical, literary, and post-colonial scholarship, Imperialisms examines early identity statements and nuances of dominance of the world's major imperialisms in various theatres of competition. Developed in collaboration with leading scholars in the field, this book balances historical essays and case studies, and encourages investigations of conversant and competing imperialisms, their practices, and their rhetoric of self-justification. Europe, India, the New World, Africa, and the Far East are among the imperialisms and their sites featured here, and which are analyzed in relation to intersecting debates on politics, religion, literature, nationalism, commerce, conversion, and race. Valuable for preliminary or advanced studies, Imperialisms provides multiple points of entry into and guidelines for a conversation both current and vigorous.

All History - Maria Bullon-Fernandez - England and Iberia in the Mi...ury, Cultural, Literary, and Political Exchanges 2007.jpg

This groundbreaking interdisciplinary collection of essays by American, British, and Iberian scholars examines the literary, historical, and artistic exchanges between England and Iberia from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. Ranging from analyses of royal marriages and political alliances to examinations of literary, artistic, and religious interactions, these essays demonstrate the importance of Anglo-Iberian relationships both in and of themselves and in the larger context of developments in Medieval Europe. They also suggest further avenues for research in an area of study that deserves greater scholarly attention. Scholars and students interested in England and Iberia or in comparative studies of Medieval Europe will want to read this book.

Kathy Lavezzo - Imagining a Medieval English Natio n (2003).jpg

During the late Middle Ages, the increasing expansion of administrative, legal, and military systems by a central government, together with the greater involvement of the commons in national life, brought England closer than ever to political nationhood. Examining a diverse array of texts-ranging from Latin and vernacular historiography to Lollard tracts, Ricardian poetry, and chivalric treatises-this volume reveals the variety of forms "England" assumed when it was imagined in the medieval West.
These essays disrupt conventional thinking about the relationship between premodernity and modernity, challenge traditional preconceptions regarding the origins of the nation, and complicate theories about the workings of nationalism. Imagining a Medieval English Nation is not only a collection of new readings of major canonical works by leading medievalists, it is among the first book-length analyses on the subject and of critical interest.

Robert Parthesius - Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters , The Development of the Dutch East India Company (2010).jpg

All History - Robert Parthesius - Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters, T...The Development of the Dutch East India Company 2010.jpg

During the closing years of the sixteenth century, the Dutch East India Company fast became a political and economic force in Asia, en route to becoming the leading private company in the world by 1660. This definitive volume explores perhaps the most important tool in the company’s trade: its ships. Robert Parthesius here reconstructs the complete shipping activities of the Company through a unique database that charts the movements of even previously ignored smaller vessels. Demonstrating that the wide range of types and sizes of vessels were indeed what gave the Company the ability to sail—and to continue its profitable trade—year after year, Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters combines the best of maritime history and archaeological research in order to change our understanding of the logistical dynamics behind one of the most important and successful businesses of this period.

Daniel S. Malachuk - Perfection, the State, and Vi ctorian Liberalism (2005).jpg

Challenging a modern culture of skepticism, this book recovers the core conviction of Victorian liberal theory that human beings, with the help of the state, can achieve an objective moral perfection. Exposing century-long interpretive habits in nineteenth-century studies and political theory that still blind us to the merits of both perfectionism and statism, the book portrays Victorian liberals like John Stuart Mill, Matthew Arnold, and the American Transcendentalists as comprising a forgotten episode in the history of liberalism of vital importance today.

Stephaine Cain Van D' Elden - The Stranger in Medi eval Society (1998).jpg

This is a collection of medieval studies concentrating on the notion of the stranger showing how outsiders influenced the culture of Europe during the Middle Ages. Among the topics explored are Edward III and "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" as historical and literary instances of chivalric skill and courage; political conflict in the late French epic "Renaut de Montauban"; and a group of people who were doubly strangers: some thirty thousand Jews, who after being expelled from France in 1306 returned under experimental agreement a few years later.

Guida M. Jackson - Women Rulers throughout the Age s, An Illustrated Guide (1999).jpg

Written by two-time encyclopedia creator Jackson (English, Univ. of Houston), this book is a handy (though, at 452 pages, heavy) biographical dictionary of women leaders. Most of the entries are quite short, but they manage to give not just a thumbnail sketch but also historical context and major contributions. All the women included here were official rulers: they range from Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, to Mary McAleese, the current president of Ireland, with a string of queens, sultanas, empresses, countesses, dutchesses, prime ministers, and presidents in between; there are no second-level leaders, no spouses of leaders, and no merely famous women listed here. Bibliographical entries appear at the end of individual biographies and at the back of the text. The illustrations, however, are not as generous as the subtitle implies. Recommended for public libraries.

Fred R. van Hartesveldt - The Boer War, Historiogr aphy and Annotated Bibliography (2000).jpg

One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one.

Ian F.W. Beckett - 1917, Beyond the Western Front (2009).jpg

The growing military, political and socio-economic costs for all belligerents as the Great War entered its fourth year were increasingly evident, liberal democracies and authoritarian states alike having to remobilise public opinion for yet greater sacrifices. While the Western Front was facing these challenges, 1917 was also marked by the collapse of Tsarist Russia and by food riots resuting both from the Entente's blockade of Central Europe and the revival of unrestricted submarine warfare by the Central Powers. Ottoman Turkey was feeling the strain of war as well, as British forces advanced in both Palestine and Mesopotamia. For states as yet uncommitted to war, such as the United States and China, 1917 was a year of decision. This volume amply illustrates the significance of this crucial year in the global conflict. The contributors are Lawrence Sondhaus, Eric Grove, Keith Grieves, Matthew Hughes, Kaushik Roy, Vanda Wilcox, Laura Rowe, and Nick Hewitt.

Gavin Edwards - Narrative Order, 1789-1819, Life a nd Story in an Age of Revolution (2006).jpg

In the decades immediately following the French Revolution, British writers saw the narrative ordering of experience as either superficial, dangerous or impossible. Linking storytelling to other forms of social action, including the making of contracts and promises, Gavin Edwards argues that the experience of radical social upheaval produced a widespread scepticism about narrative as linguistic artefact, the transmission of narrative through storytelling and the understanding of individual or collective life as a temporal sequence with a beginning and an end.

All History - Robert Grant - Representations of British Emigration,...tion and Settlement, Imagining Empire, 1800-1860 2006.jpg

This volume explores the complex relationships between early nineteenth-century representations of emigration, colonization and settlement, and the social, economic and cultural conditions within which they were produced. It stresses the role of writers, illustrators and artists in "making" colonial/settler landscapes within the metropolitan imaginary, paying particularly close attention to the complex interdependencies between metropolis and colony. Focusing on Canada, Australia and New Zealand, its interdisciplinarity and global reach adds considerably to the field of colonial studies.

Rebecca Stefoff - First Humans (2009).jpg

In this four-book series we step back in time—back so many years that it is hard to grasp the distance—to explore our roots. Amazingly, for most of the millions of years that people have been around, there was more than one species of human in the world. Can you imagine meeting another species of human? Today we, Homo sapiens, are the only species of human on Earth. How did we become what we are today, and who were our ancestors and cousins in the human family free? Together, the four books in Humans: An Evolutionary History answer these questions and more:
Origins focuses on the search for our earliest ancestors, including the australopiths, an offshoot of the ape family that lived in Africa five million years ago.
First Humans introduces the genus Homo—our branch of the family tree—and describes how its members migrated out of Africa.
ICE Age Neanderthals tells the story of people who lived in Eurasia for hundreds of thousands of years, only to become extinct when our species arrived on the scene.
Modern Humans examines our species, which spread from Africa to every part of the world, and looks at the DNA research that is uncovering our hidden history.
Children's Literature
Readers learn about early human species, including several belonging to genus Homo, in this second book in the "Humans: An Evolutionary History" series. Text addresses scandals associated with controversial Piltdown Man fossils discovered in an English gravel pit. Because some of those fossils had human and others ape traits, many people believed they represented a missing link, while others proved the Piltdown Man was a fraud. This book examines the ramifications of the Piltdown Man hoax to human evolutionary science. The role of Oldowan tools and the Acheulean hand ax in human evolution is explored. Many scientists found human fossils in Asian medicine stores because people believed they were dragon bones with healing powers. Davidson Black and Wenzhong Pei protected human fossils, known as Peking Man, from thieves while traveling from his excavation site to Beijing. When Japan occupied China during World War II, Franz Weidenreich, Black's successor, cast those fossils in plaster which he took to the American Museum of Natural History. Peking Man vanished during the war and still remains missing. Mary Leakey's Nutcracker Man had larger jaws and teeth than other early human fossils, causing researchers to contemplate that fossil's position in human evolution and possibility of being the ancestor of modern humans. Supplementary material includes illustrations, a glossary, endnotes, a bibliography, a timeline, a chronology, charts, and a map. Mysteries surrounding Piltdown and Peking Men present intriguing report and project subjects. Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer

Mogens Laerke - The Use of Censorship in the Enlig htenment (2009).jpg

The ambition is of this volume to study the role censorship played in the intellectual culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, how it was implemented, and how it affected the development philosophy and literary writing. It contains contributions by intellectual historians, philosophers and literary theorists. The first section studies how Enlightenment thinkers were submitted to censorship, in particular the German Spinozists, Pierre Bayle, and the French Encylopedists. The second section on the institutional aspects of censorship contains an analysis of the breakdown of censorship in England around 1640 and a discussion of the impact of censorship on philosophy in the Netherlands. The final section studies the stand three Enlightenment thinkers, namely John Toland, Denis Diderot, and G. W. Leibniz, took on the issue of censorship.
