J.Headly - Napoleon and his Marshals (1888).jpg

The composition of the marshals, senior commanders of the Grand Army of Napoleon, was not uniform. Napoleon distributing a marshal's baton, and representatives of the old aristocracy, and people from the bourgeois, the peasant class. The main demand of the emperor was impeccable diligence and initiative. Its massive First Empire state marshals have paid with blood literally on the battlefield. Marshal Udin was injured, for example, more than 20 times. The book tells the story of an American historian's relationship to Napoleon and his marshals.

Stefan Collini, Richard Whatmore, Brian Young - Hi story, Religion, and Culture, British Intellectual History 1750-1950 (2000).jpg

All History - Stefan Collini, Richard Whatmore, Brian Young - Histo... Culture, British Intellectual History 1750-1950 2000.jpg

Modern British intellectual history has been a particularly flourishing field of enquiry in recent years, and these two tightly integrated volumes contain major new essays by almost all of its leading proponents. The contributors examine the history of British ideas over the past two centuries from a number of perspectives that together constitute a major new overview of the subject. History, Religion, and Culture begins with eighteenth-century historiography, especially Gibbon's Decline and Fall. It takes up different aspects of the place of religion in nineteenth-century cultural and political life, such as attitudes towards the native religions of India, the Victorian perception of Oliver Cromwell, and the religious sensibility of John Ruskin. Finally, in discussions which range up to the middle of the twentieth century, the volume explores relations between scientific ideas about change or development and assumptions about the nature and growth of the national community.

Alessandro Conti, Helen Glanville - History of the Restoration and Conservation of Works of Art (200 7).jpg

At times controversial and uncompromising, always intellectually honest, Alessandro Conti's book is - astonishingly - the only attempt to comprehensively chart in time, the changing impact of man's desire to preserve for future generations the materials, meaning and appearances of works of art. Remarkable in its meticulous research of source material and breadth of scope, History of the Restoration and Conservation of Works of Arts, translated by Helen Glanville, charts the practices and underlying philosophies of conservation and 'restored' works of art from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century.
In English-speaking countries, a lack of foreign language skills leaves many unable to consult a wealth of both published and unpublished historical documentation. Developments in conservation have therefore tended toward the scientific and analytical. Access to such documentation leads to better understanding of the present appearance of works of art and of their changing aspect and perception over time. Recent publications indicate that there is a great need for people writing on the subject to be aware of material which is not in their mother tongue: approaches presented as 'new' are in fact merely 'contemporary', and have been discussed or practiced in other centuries and countries.
Just as knowledge of practices and effects of art conservation and restoration should form an integral part of History of Art Degrees, the more theoretic, abstract and historical aspects, should also be part of the training. This book is an invaluable source for academic and public institutions, art historians as well as practicing conservators and lovers of art.

*The only book in English dealing with the history of conservation and restoration of works of art.
*Translated by a practising restorer who has lectured widely on the subject to professional and student audiences, as well as the general public.
*Provides readers with contextualising introductions, extensive bibliography of original sources and archival material and a glossary of terms as well a biographical details.

Marlyn J. Landis - Antarctica, Exploring the Extre me, 400 Years of Adventure (2003).jpg

Freelance writer and earth scientist Landis made several trips to Antarctica to research this historical survey of Antarctic exploration. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1, on general exploration, describes the voyages of the great explorers Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, James Cook, Capt. F.F. Bellinghausen, James Weddell, Dumont D'Urville, Charles Wilkes, Sir James Clark Ross, Robert F. Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, and Richard Byrd. Part 2, on regional exploration, covers expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula, the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea, East Antarctica, and selected sub-Antarctic islands. Part 3, on historical geography and wildlife, chronicles the geological development of the continent and its wildlife. Landis has a knack for quickly characterizing historical figures, mentioning that Magellan "was a small, wiry, unassuming man with a severe limp" or that Drake was "permanently lamed" by a Spanish musket ball still in his leg from his exploits in Panama. There is some overlap of coverage, and names from Part 1 inevitably resurface in Part 2, but this well-written history is the best recent historical survey of Antarctica and a very good purchase for public and undergraduate collections. Michele Fratianni, Franco Spinelli - A Monetary Hi story of Italy (1997).jpg

This volume deals with the monetary history of Italy from independence in 1861 to 1992. It provides the first complete analysis of a country that has experienced diverse and often dramatic monetary conditions. The book contributes in a novel way not only to the monetary debate, but also to fiscal and institutional questions. The authors combine economic theory, statistical data, and history in an accessible way that should prove useful to both economic historians and monetary economists.

Frederick Thomas Jane - Your Navy as a Fighting Ma chine (1914).jpg

Fred T. Jane: "This little book is an attempt to produce an entirely non-technical handbook for the use of those who, till European war came along, did not interest themselves innaval matters. Till now a vast number of people have taken the Navy for granted. It has existed to them much as St. Paul's Cathedral exists. To the great majority there has been no occasion to trouble about anything, save perhaps one or two of the more picturesque features of the Fleet. Now, however, after a hundred years of peace the British Navy is engaged in naval warfare and the entire situation is changed accordingly.
It is true that during this past century the Navy has been engaged in various operations. In the Crimean War, for in¬stance, two considerable fleets were em¬ployed. Both before and since our ships have bombarded forts and places, like Algiers and Alexandria, but in all the hundred years there has been no war between British fleets and the fleets of a foreign Power. And so it comes about that all eyes are now upon the Navy, which somewhere on the seas started facing the unknown directly Austria sent her ultimatum to Servia.
So soon as that incident occurred every¬thing which has happened since became a vivid possibility. From that moment the Fleet had to be on watch and guard lest Germany should fall on us unawares. That she intended to attempt it was perfectly well-known—it had been known for years to all in authority.
The British Navy for which the public has paid is now undergoing the supreme test."

Philip D. Curtin - Cross-Cultural Trade in World H istory (1984).jpg

A single theme is pursued in this book - the trade between peoples of differing cultures through world history. Extending from the ancient world to the coming of the commercial revolution, Professor Curtin's discussion encompasses a broad and diverse group of trading relationships. Drawing on insights from economic history and anthropology, Professor Curtin has attempted to move beyond a Europe-centred view of history, to one that can help us understand the entire range of societies in the human past. Examples have been chosen that illustrate the greatest variety of trading relationships between cultures. The opening chapters look at Africa, while subsequent chapters treat the ancient world, the Mediterranean trade with China, the Asian trade in the east, and European entry into the trade with maritime Asia, the Armenian trade carriers of the seventeenth century, and the North American fur trade. Wide-ranging in its concern and the fruit of exhaustive research, the book is nevertheless written so as to be accessible and stimulating to the specialist and the student alike.

Victor Davis Hanson - Makers of Ancient Strategy, From the Persian Wars to the Fall of Rome (2010).jpg

In this prequel to the now-classic Makers of Modern Strategy, Victor Davis Hanson, a leading scholar of ancient military history, gathers prominent thinkers to explore key facets of warfare, strategy, and foreign policy in the Greco-Roman world. From the Persian Wars to the final defense of the Roman Empire, Makers of Ancient Strategy demonstrates that the military thinking and policies of the ancient Greeks and Romans remain surprisingly relevant for understanding conflict in the modern world.

The book reveals that much of the organized violence witnessed today--such as counterterrorism, urban fighting, insurgencies, preemptive war, and ethnic cleansing--has ample precedent in the classical era. The book examines the preemption and unilateralism used to instill democracy during Epaminondas's great invasion of the Peloponnesus in 369 BC, as well as the counterinsurgency and terrorism that characterized Rome's battles with insurgents such as Spartacus, Mithridates, and the Cilician pirates. The collection looks at the urban warfare that became increasingly common as more battles were fought within city walls, and follows the careful tactical strategies of statesmen as diverse as Pericles, Demosthenes, Alexander, Pyrrhus, Caesar, and Augustus. Makers of Ancient Strategy shows how Greco-Roman history sheds light on wars of every age. In addition to the editor, the contributors are David L. Berkey, Adrian Goldsworthy, Peter J. Heather, Tom Holland, Donald Kagan, John W. I. Lee, Susan Mattern, Barry Strauss, and Ian Worthington.

Alan Forrest - Conscripts and Deserters, The Army and French Society During the Revolution and Empir e (1989).jpg

Between the outbreak of war with Austria in 1792 and Napoleon's final debacle in 1814, France remained almost continously at war, recruiting in the process some two to three million frenchmen--a level of recruitment unknown to previous generations and widely resented as an attack on the liberties of rural communities. Forrest challenges the notion of a nation heroically rushing to arms by examining the massive rates of desertion and avoidance of service as well as their consequences on French society--on military campaigns and the morale of armies, on political opinion at home, on the social fabric of local villages, and on the Napoleonic dream of bringing about a coherent and centralized state.

Eluned Summers-Bremner - Insomnia, A Cultural Hist ory (2008).jpg

In today’s media-saturated and hyperconnected society, increasing numbers of people are finding it hard to switch off their overstimulated brains and escape the demands of daily life. We are becoming, it seems, a world of insomniacs. But this condition of perpetual unrest has plagued people for centuries. The roots and effects of insomnia are complex, Eluned Summers-Bremner reveals in this fascinating study, and humans have employed everything from art to science to understand, explain, and mitigate this problem.
The author begins her exploration of sleeplessness with the literature of ancient times, finding its sufferers in such prominent texts as the Iliad, the Mesopotamian epic Gilgamesh, and the Bible. Insomnia continued to figure large in Romantic and Gothic literature, as the advent of street lighting in the nineteenth century inspired the fantastical blurring of daytime reality and night specters, and authors connected insomnia to the ephemeral worlds of nightmares and the sublime. Meanwhile, throughout the ages insomnia has been variously categorized by the medical community as a symptom of deeper maladies: in medieval and early modern times, for example, physicians and philosophers saw insomnia as a sign of lovesickness, melancholy, or even demonic possession. As modern medicine and science evolved, insomnia emerged as a distinct symptom of such ailments as post-traumatic stress disorder after war. Today’s medical solutions tend to involve prescription drugs, and Insomnia ultimately raises important questions about the role of the pharmaceutical industry and the effectiveness of such treatments.

Gregory M. Luebbert - Liberalism, Fascism, or Soci al Democracy, Social Classes and the Political Ori gins of Regimes in Interwar Europe (1991).jpg

All History - Gregory M. Luebbert - Liberalism, Fascism, or Social ... Political Origins of Regimes in Interwar Europe 1991.jpg

This work provides a sweeping historical analysis of the political development of Western Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Arguing that the evolution of most Western European nations into liberal democracies, social democracies, or fascist regimes was attributable to a discrete set of social class alliances, the author explores the origins and outcomes of the political development in the individual nations. In Britain, France, and Switzerland, countries with a unified middle class, liberal forces established political hegemony before World War I. By coopting considerable sections of the working class with reforms that weakened union movements, liberals essentially excluded the fragmented working class from the political process, remaining in power throughout the inter-war period. In countries with a strong, cohesive working class and a fractured middle class, Luebbert points out, a liberal solution was impossible. In Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Czechoslovakia, political coalitions of social democrats and the "family peasantry" emerged as a result of the First World War, leading to social democratic governments. In Italy, Spain, and Germany, on the other hand, the urban middle class united with a peasantry hostile to socialism to facilitate the rise of fascism.

All History - Prasannan Parthasarathi - The Transition to a Colonia... Merchants and Kings in South India, 1720-1800 2001.jpg

In a challenge to the widespread belief that poverty and poor living standards have been characteristic of India for centuries, Prasannan Parthasarathi demonstrates that, until the late eighteenth century, laboring groups in South India were in a powerful position, receiving incomes well above subsistence. It was with the rise of colonial rule, the author maintains, that the decline in their economic fortunes was initiated. This is a powerful revisionist statement on the role of Britain in India that will interest students of the region, and economic and colonial historians.

The history of incorporations legislation and its administration is intimately tied to changes in social beliefs in respect to the role and purpose of the corporation. By studying the evolution of the corporate form in Britain and a number of its colonial possessions, the book illuminates debates on key concepts including the meanings of laissez faire, freedom of commerce, the notion of corporate responsibility and the role of the state in the regulation of business. In doing so, the book advances our understanding of the shape, effectiveness and deficiencies of modern regulatory regimes.

Robert Darnton - The Business of Enlightenment, Pu blishing History of the ''Encyclopedie'', 1775-180 0 (1986).jpg

A great book about an even greater book is a rare event in publishing. Darnton's history of the Encyclopédie is such an occasion. The author explores some fascinating territory in the French genre of histoire du livre, and at the same time he tracks the diffusion of Enlightenment ideas. He is concerned with the form of the thought of the great philosophes as it materialized into books and with the way books were made and distributed in the business of publishing. This is cultural history on a broad scale, a history of the process of civilization.
In tracing the publishing story of Diderot's Encyclopédie, Darnton uses new sources--the papers of eighteenth-century publishers--that allow him to respond firmly to a set of problems long vexing historians. He shows how the material basis of literature and the technology of its production affected the substance and diffusion of ideas. He fully explores the workings of the literary market place, including the roles of publishers, book dealers, traveling salesmen, and other intermediaries in cultural communication. How publishing functioned as a business, and how it fit into the political as well as the economic systems of prerevolutionary Europe are set forth. The making of books touched on this vast range of activities because books were products of artisanal labor, objects of economic exchange, vehicles of ideas, and elements in political and religious conflict.
The ways ideas traveled in early modern Europe, the level of penetration of Enlightenment ideas in the society of the Old Regime, and the connections between the Enlightenment and the French Revolution are brilliantly treated by Darnton. In doing so he unearths a double paradox. It was the upper orders in society rather than the industrial bourgeoisie or the lower classes that first shook off archaic beliefs and took up Enlightenment ideas. And the state, which initially had suppressed those ideas, ultimately came to favor them. Yet at this high point in the diffusion and legitimation of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution erupted, destroying the social and political order in which the Enlightenment had flourished.
Never again will the contours of the Enlightenment be drawn without reference to this work. Darnton has written an indispensable book for historians of modern Europe.
