In February 1942, intelligence officer Victor Jones erected 150 tents behind British lines in North Africa. "Hiding tanks in Bedouin tents was an old British trick, writes Nicholas Rankin; German general Erwin Rommel not only knew of the ploy, but had copied it himself. Jones knew that Rommel knew. In fact, he counted on it--for these tents were empty. With the deception that he was carrying out a deception, Jones made a weak point look like a trap.

In A Genius for Deception, Rankin offers a lively and comprehensive history of how Britain bluffed, tricked, and spied its way to victory in two world wars. As he shows, a coherent program of strategic deception emerged in World War I, resting on the pillars of camouflage, propaganda, secret intelligence, and special forces. All forms of deception found an avid sponsor in Winston Churchill, who carried his enthusiasm for deceiving the enemy into World War II. Rankin vividly recounts such little-known episodes as the invention of camouflage by two French artist-soldiers, the creation of dummy airfields for the Germans to bomb during the Blitz, and the fabrication of an army that would supposedly invade Greece. Strategic deception would be key to a number of WWII battles, culminating in the massive misdirection that proved critical to the success of the D-Day invasion in 1944.

Deeply researched and written with an eye for telling detail, A Genius for Deception shows how British used craft and cunning to help win the most devastating wars in human history.

In this unforgettable narrative, Corti depicts the war from the perspective of the average Italian soldier, capturing its boredom and absurdity along with brief periods of savagery, terror, and death. Painting vivid pictures of the sights, sounds, and smells of war, he shows how these men fought alongside the Allies against the Germans. They fought without hatred, driven by a sense of duty and love for their country and a desire to quickly put an end to a war that was destroying so many lives. Corti superbly relates the wandering of the remnant of Italian officers and men as they sought to reestablish themselves as Italian soldiers. The Last Soldiers of the King tells the story of a proud people forced to endure death, poverty and the virtual destruction of their nation.

The book attempts to describe the battle of Kharkov by using both Soviet and Germans sources. Particularly interesting is the use of a hitherto-classified Soviet study of the battle, written a few years after the war. Both what the study says and what it ommits are very revealing. This book is a masterpiece in its genre and recommended to anyone with an interest in the Eastern Front, but I confess I would like both a more thorough OB, like the one in "Operation Mars", his other book, and better maps.

Hitler versus Stalin shows the brutality, horror and heroism of war on the Eastern Front as never before. Over 300 rare photographs, many recently released from the Russian archives and previously unpublished in the West, illustrate every phase and aspect of the Eastern Front campaigns, from the Nazis' early blitzkrieg successes, the battle for Moscow and the siege of Leningrad, through the street fighting for Stalingrad, and the Soviet successes at Kursk and Operation Bagration, to the climactic fall of Berlin and the link-up between Soviet and Western armies amid the ruins of the "1000-year Reich". This is total war in its most barbaric form: nearly 30 million Soviet soldiers and citizens were killed during four years of struggle against their German invaders.

The Second World War is so well documented that any new history usually relies to a large extent on the added value of untapped primary sources or personal experience to make its mark. The Second World War in the West is the exception to the rule. Charles Messenger sticks to the conventional wisdom about the causes of the 1939-1945 war--the Treaty of Versailles, for example--and his analysis of the main conflicts and turning points will find few dissenters. Where he scores heavily, though, is in steering a careful path between detail and simplicity to provide a vivid picture of the breadth of the war in the four major European theaters--northwestern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Balkans, North Africa and the Middle-East, and the Third Reich and the East. Messenger's clarity is consolidated by superb design, but pride of place must go to the chronology, the maps and the brief biographies. Many histories are too self-important to give a week-by-week guide to the war, but Messenger's simple chronology does more to connect seemingly disparate European events than many complete books. The 21 maps, some of which are virtually in 3D, are minor artworks and, to complete the package, we get a brief résumé of which campaigns the leading generals on both sides were engaged in. If you already have an extensive library of military history, you can probably give this book a miss. But if you are new to the subject and are looking for a comprehensive, comprehensible introduction to one of the key events of the 20th century, then Messenger is your man.

When Hitler invaded Soviet Russia in June 1941, Waffen-SS divisions were in the forefront of the fighting and remained there throughout the war, spearheading the drive on Moscow and the battles around Kharkov and Kursk, and finally capitulating only after last-ditch stands in the crumbling ruins of the Third Reich in 1945. Throughout these four years the SS divisions, whose personnel owed their loyalty personally to Hitler rather than to the German state, and whom he therefore trusted more than the Army, were placed wherever the situation was most critical and the fighting hardest. Their casualties were enormous, but their loyalty immense.
Volunteers for the Waffen-SS were enlisted through the ordinary Army recruiting offices who, naturally, did not want to see the cream of German youth entering 'Himmler's private army' and held their numbers down to a mere third of what they might otherwise have been. Nevertheless, by 1944 there were approximately 910,000 fighting soldiers in some 38 SS divisions -not all stationed in Russia, of course. In 1941, however, there were only four divisions involved: the SS Leibstandarte 'Adolf Hitler', the SS 'Reich' (later to be renamed 'Das Reich'), the SS 'Totenkopf and the SS 'Wiking'. The first and last of these formed part of von Kleist's Panzergruppe in Army Group South, SS 'Reich' as part of Guderian's Panzergruppe in the centre, and 'Totenkopf as part of Hoepner's Panzergruppe in the north. At this time the SS formations were of similar composition and strength to regular Army motorised infantry divisions, but included a small complement of tanks. Later in the war they were to grow to the size of full-fledged Panzer divisions.

The idea of this Pen and Sword series is clearly to give general readers a good understanding of the battle or campaign backed up with a wide variety of contemporary photographs and in this Stalingrad - Victory on the Volga succceeeds admirably. The text is informative and detailed veering away from the oft-repeated 'laundry list' of division x did this and that unto division z sufficiently to give some interesting info' about the units and individuals concerned in this hellish maelstrom.

To THE JAPANESE PEOPLE "Rengo Kaiitai" is a familiar and honored term meaning "Combined Fleet." When World War II began, the Japanese Navy — the third most powerful in the world—included some of the mightiest ships in naval history and was a force worthy of the pride and trust of the Japanese people. Then, in less than four years, this great war machine fell from glory to oblivion. Often battleships riding in Hiroshima Bay in December, 1941, nine were sunk. The lone survivor, Nagato, died at Bikini Island as a target in an atomic bomb test.
As early as the spring of 1946, Bungei Shunja magazine urged me to write of the last days of the Combined Fleet. I refused because I did not wish to disturb the dead bodies of my friends. Even if I had forced myself to write, I would not then have been able to assemble all the material now available to me. In the years since Japan's defeat, the war-troubled mind of the people has been calmed, but I find that there is still nostalgia for the Combined Fleet in many hearts. It was at the request of Japanese readers that my newspaper articles were assembled into this book.

FIFTY-FIVE years after the end of the Second World War in Europe, history's long arm reached out from the distant shadows I of long silent battlefields to the most unlikely of places. During April 2000, in a tiny Post Office at Staintondale, on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, a unique time capsule arrived unexpectedly into the hands of the Post Office's owner Frank James. Twenty black-and-white photographs, some dappled with age, were handed over by a man unsure of their provenance, or indeed of what to do with them. The photographs showed young men aboard a submarine, the national cockade on their caps surmounted by an eagle clutching in its talons the unmistakable swastika symbol of the Third Reich. Obviously it was a U-boat crew, but who they were, and where, remained a mystery to Frank.
With an interest in all aspects of history, but no knowledge of the U-Boat Service, Frank proceeded to research what he could about the random photographs. Aiding him enormouslv was the fact that most boats carried an unofficial symbol, a distinctive Wappen (emblem, or coat of arms) painted somewhere on the conning tower. In this case it was instantly recognisable —a large black cat, tail held proudly upright and back arched over the digits '3X'. Although some fourteen U-boats carried cats as part of their Wappen, this must be one of the five U-boats that carried the dreimal schwarze Kater symbol — 'Three Black Cats'. In turn it soon became apparent that the photographs were all taken aboard U 564, commanded by the legendary Reinhard 'Teddy' Suhren.

One of the least known stories of World War II, Operation Mars was a military disaster on an epic scale. Designed to dislodge the German Army from its position west of Moscow, it cost the Soviets an estimated 335,000 dead, missing and wounded men and over 1,600 tanks. But in Russian history books, it was a battle that never happened. It became instead another victim of Stalin's postwar censorship. This book offers an account of this forgotten catastrophe, revealing the key players and detailing the major events of Operation Mars. Using sources in both German and Russian archives, he reconstructs the historical context of Mars and reviews the entire operation from High Command to platoon level. Orchestrated and led by Marshal Georgy Kostantinovich Zhukov, one of the Soviet Union's great military heroes, the twin operations Mars and Uranus formed the centrepiece of Soviet strategic efforts in the fall of 1942. Launched in tandem with Operation Uranus, the successful counteroffensive at Stalingrad, Mars proved a monumental setback. Fought in bad weather and on impossible terrain, the ambitious offensive faltered (despite spectacular initial success in some sectors). Zhukov kept sending in more troops and tanks only to see them decimiated by the entrenched Germans. Illuminating the painful progress of Operation Mars with battle scenes and numerous maps and illustrations, Glantz presents Mars as a major failure of Zhukov's renowned command. Yet, both during and after the war, that failure was masked from public view by the successful Stalingrad operation, thus eliminating any stain from Zhukov's public image as a hero of the Great Patriotic War. For three gruelling weeks, Operation Mars was one of the most tragic and agonizing episodes in Soviet military history, Glantz's reconstructon of that failed offensive should fills a gap in our knowledge of World War II, even as it raises important questions about the reputations of national military heroes.

The development of the German Fallschirmjager (parachutists) formations can be traced hack to the vears preceding World War I. During the vears between 1900 and 1914, two major revolutionary military developments emerged. The first was the submersible; the second, and more junior, was powered flight. All Europe was lascinated by the latter, being beguiled bv the fantasies and hysteria that surrounded it. In Germany in particular there was much interest shown in powered flight, although in Great Britain the relevant authorities were sceptical. In 1909, for example, the British Committee of Imperial I Mence reported that "it had vet to be shown whether aeroplanes are sufficiently reliable to be used under unfavourable weather conditions. The committee has been unable to obtain any trustworthy evidence to show whether any great improvement was to be expected in the immediate future". The high cost of an aeroplane, £ 1000, was noted and the committee concluded that £45,000 should be invested in airship research instead.

On New Year's Eve 1942, Hitler agreed to the formation of two new divisions for the Waffen-SS.These were the 9th and 10th SS Panzergrenadier Divisions. The 9th was later given the name Hohenstaufen, and its sister, the 10th, became Frundsberg. Formed in 1943, Hohenstaufen was given the number 9 simply because it was the ninth division to be created in theWaffen-SS.The name Hohenstaufen was a homage to one of Germany's ancient noble families, a dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire which provided several kings and emperors between the years 1138 and 1254.The earliest known head of the family was Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, the Count of Buren, who died in 1094. His son, Friedrich II, built a castle at Staufen near Lorsch in Swabia which was called Hohenstaufen; he later changed his surname to that of his castle. Friedrich II was one of Hitler's favourite historical personalities, and it is believed this was why the family name was used for the 9th Panzer Division. Both Friedrichs are of particular importance to German history but Barbarossa — as with Arthur in British myth and legend — is said to be sleeping in the mountains awaiting Germany's direst need.
The SS or Schutzstaffel was originally formed as Hitler's personal protection unit in 1925. One of its main roles was to take care of internal German security, and in line with the Nazi political ideal, in the early days it only took true Aryan candidates. As time went on and manpower became shorter, however, this rule was relaxed. The Waffen-SS was formed by Heinrich Himmler in December 1940, when it was created out of the Leibstandarte, the SS-Verfiigungstruppe and the Totenkopf Standarten as a third branch of the SS. It represented the true military part of this large and politically complex organisation, and while it was initially intended to act as security for the homeland, it was not long before Hitler ordered his elite to the front line.

The largest invasion the world has ever seen kicked off on 22 June 1941, as Hitler's massed forces swarmed across the border into the Soviet Union. Operation Barbarossa, as the campaign was named, was supposed to last just ten weeks. In fact, Germany enjoyed five months of victory before they were eventually denied and turned away at the very gates of Moscow. Thus, the long and slow road to defeat began. This new book by Robert Kirchubel outlines Germany's ambitious hopes for Operation Barbarossa via a careful selection of photos.
In typical style for this series of Concord books, the work begins with some concise background text. Here the author explains what led up to the invasion of Russia, as well as providing salient points about the campaign right up to Operation Typhoon, the final assault on Moscow. The core of "Barbarossa" is the set of superb black and white photographs that document this spectacular, but ultimately futile, campaign. Soldiers are seen in all sorts of contexts in the vast steppes of Russia through contemporary camera lenses. There is a wide variety of vehicle types and weapons on show, which will please readers. Vehicles such as trucks, horse-drawn carriages and halftracks are all in evidence, as are numerous captured or destroyed Russian tanks and military vehicles. Photo captions are brief but provide relevant data and information about this long and arduous campaign.
The artist Ramiro Bujeiro has also provided four color plates depicting realistic-looking impressions of German soldiers and officers. These are accompanied by detailed descriptions giving pertinent facts about uniforms and personal equipment. This is an interesting volume packed with unique photos from this important campaign. As the writer states in his concluding paragraph, "When the war in Russia transformed from one of maneuver to one of attrition, it became a war Germany could no longer win." Readers wishing to see how Operation Barbarossa played out, and how German soldiers participated in it, will find this book a valuable ally.

This book consisted of two parts: Hitler Youth and the Hitlerjugend at war. Youth movement in Germany started as early as the 1920's and when Kurt Gruber took charge, the movement was officially called "Hitler Jugend" in 1926. By 1933, the membership rose to 2,300,000 youths. The underage boys were trained in all sorts of military skills including marksmen. Throughout the war, Hitler Jugend were involved, especially during the last days of the Reich, when Hitler Jugend fought alongside the Volkssturm defending the Fatherland. The 12.SS-Panzer-Division "Hitlerjugend" was formed in 1943. Many high rank officers were transferred from LSSAH including Fritz Witt, Kurt Meyer and Wilhelm Mohnke. The division was ready for action in the spring of 1944. The baptism of fire came when the Allies landed in Normandy and the division was thrown into battle against the Canadians. The division was enveloped in the Falaise pocket and survivors fought a series of rear guard actions as they withdrew from France towards Belgian, finally back to Germany. In December 1944, the division took part in the Ardennes Offensive. In 1945, the division was transferred to Hungary to fight against the Soviets and subsequently surrendered to the Americans in Austria on 8 May, 1945. Tom Cockle provides very informative and accurate text on the Hitler Youth and 12.SS-Panzer-Division "Hitlerjugend", backed up by many rare photos, especially those depicting boys in arms.

The battle of Budapest (December 1944 to February 1945) was one of the longest and bloodiest city sieges of World War II. From the appearance of the first Soviet tanks on the outskirts of the capital to the capture of Buda castle 102 days elapsed. In terms of human trauma, it comes second only to Stalingrad, comparisons to which were even being made by soldiers, both German and Soviet, fighting at the time. The battle for Budapest raged over the heads of 800,000 non-combatants, and this history covers their experiences and those of the military personnel involved in the struggle.
