In today's world of globalization, there is a growing trend among historians and students alike to study the common challenges and experiences that unite the human past. "Facts On File" is pleased to announce its new seven-volume "Encyclopedia of World History", a truly groundbreaking work and one of the first to offer a balanced presentation of human history for a global perspective of the past. A team of distinguished world history academics has brought together scores of specialists in writing signed entries based on the latest scholarship.Based on the National Standards for World History and influenced by the National Standards for World History, this comprehensive and authoritative set is rich in features to make the study of world history easier for students to understand. Arranged in six chronological eras that span from prehistory to the present day, this chronological approach follows the way world history is taught and studied in the classroom. Each volume era begins with essays that tackle large themes - such as agriculture, science and technology, social and class relationships, trade and cultural exchanges, and warfare - that allow students to make connections and trace key global patterns over time. The final volume contains primary documents, a chronology, and a master index for the set.It contains thematic essays that help students make comparisons and connections across regions and time periods. It is based on primary source documents, carefully chosen to be representative of the six world eras. It is informative with cross-referenced entries. It also includes: Chronologies in every volume to help students place events in context; More than 600 illustrations, including a 32-page insert of full-color maps in each volume designed to convey the importance of geography in world history

Constance Milbrath, Cynthia Lightfoot - Art and Hu man Development (2009).jpg

This interdisciplinary volume explores art, its development, and its role in the construction of knowledge. Presenting theory and research on artistic development as a cultural and creative endeavor, contributors examine the origins of human art during the Paleolithic cultural revolution, as part of a modern cultural transformation, in the growth of a creative artist, and in developing children.
Target chapters expressing the disciplinary perspectives of psychology, archaeology, communications, education, and the performing arts are followed by commentaries from internationally acclaimed scholars of human development. Part 1 explores how cultures harness and exploit the arts to give expression to values, social practices, and traditions. This section traces the emergence of new art forms that arose during social unrest, including the symbolization of spiritual beliefs expressed on the walls of Paleolithic caves, and the racial identity and cultural values expressed in the media of the hip-hop generation. Part 2 examines the journeys of a composer and a group of students to highlight the process of becoming an artist and the role education plays in its development. The book concludes with a focus on the development of aesthetic appreciation and artistic activity in childhood and adolescence, including, for example, how a child’s developing theory of mind affects appreciation for the arts, and how developing empathy and emotional regulation contribute to the cognitive and affective underpinnings of acting in adolescence. As a whole contributors explore the developmental, sociocultural, and evolutionary processes that make the creation and experience of art possible.
Intended for researchers and advanced students in both human development and the arts, this book will also serve as a textbook for advanced courses on psychology and the arts and/or special topics courses in cognitive and/or human development.

James Farr - The Work of France, Labor and Culture in Early Modern Times, 1350-1800 (2002).jpg

In elegant and vivid prose, this deeply informed book offers a powerful synthesis of the ways men and women worked in early modern France. Distinguished historian James R. Farr shows how the shifting, and often contradictory, forces of an increasingly modern economy shaped ideas about and roles of labor. Presenting a unified and compelling argument about the role of labor in society, Farr addresses a complex set of questions and succeeds masterfully at answering them. With its stylish writing and clear themes, this book will find a broad audience among students and scholars of early modern Europe, French history, economics, gender studies, anthropology, and labor studies.

Richard A. Gabriel - Soldiers' Lives through Histo ry, The Ancient World (2006).jpeg

Once warfare became established in ancient civilizations, it's hard to find any other social institution that developed as quickly. In less than a thousand years, humans brought forth the sword, sling, dagger, mace, bronze and copper weapons, and fortified towns. The next thousand years saw the emergence of iron weapons, the chariot, the standing professional army, military academies, general staffs, military training, permanent arms industries, written texts on tactics, military procurement, logistics systems, conscription, and military pay. By 2,000 B.C.E., war was an important institution in almost all major cultures of the world. This book shows readers how soldiers were recruited, outfitted, how they fought, and how they were cared for when injured or when they died. It covers soldiers in major civilizations from about 4000 B.C.E. to about 450 C.E. Soldiers' Lives through History; The Ancient World is divided into two parts, the first addressing military life and the second the ancient armies themselves. "Military Life" presents twenty-one chapters, on significant aspects of military life in the ancient world.

Willi Jordan - Ancient Concepts of Philosophy (199 3).jpg

For Socrates, philosophy was the study of how to lead one's life. For Wittgenstein, "philosophy leaves everything as it is." Ancient Concepts of Philosophy sets the work of the ancients in the context of the most recent thinking about the nature and value of philosophy.
William Jordan questions what we can learn from the ancient philosophers' varying conceptions of the ideal life. He argues that ancient philosophy was tied much more closely to ways of life, and lived up to its reputation as the search for wisdom. Jordan traces the emergence of the idea that the philosopher leads a distinctive and uniquely valuable lifestyle. This ancient concept of philosophy, he argues, is the one which differs most markedly from our own.
Jordan discusses the purpose of philosophy and the aims of the philosophical life. He discusses the nature of the philosophical questions asked by the Greeks, their methods of argument, and their philosophical results. He explores the question of whether philosophy has contracted since ancient times, and examines how the study of philosophy is related to the study of the history of philosophy.
Now available in paper, Ancient Concepts of Philosophy provides a historical approach to vital questions about the nature of philosophy, and will interest students of philosophy and anyone who aspires to lead an "examined" life.

Christopher Harvie, H. C. G. Matthew - Nineteenth- Century Britain, A Very Short Introduction (2000).jpg

The nineteenth century was a time of massive growth for Britain. In 1800 it was overwhelmingly rural, agrarian, multilingual, and almost half-Celtic. A century later it was largely urban and English. The effects of the Industrial Revolution caused cities to swell enormously. London, for example, grew from about 1 million people to over 6 million. Abroad, the British Empire was reaching its apex, while at home the world came to marvel at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with its crowning achievement--the Crystal Palace. Historians Christopher Harvie and Colin Matthew present a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the social, economic, and political events that marked the era on which many believed the sun would never set.

About the Author
Christopher Harvie is Professor of British and Irish Studies at Tübingen in Germany. Colin Matthew is editor of the Gladstone Diaries and author of an award-winning life of the Victorian statesman.

Lucien X. Polastron - Books on Fire, The Destructi on of Libraries throughout History (2007).jpg

In his acclaimed Double Fold (2001), Nicholson Baker expressed outrage over newspapers and books turned into landfill by librarians who chose microfilm over paper. French historian Polastron picks up where Baker left off, writing with equal passion yet punctuating his pages with wit. A specialist in Chinese and Arab studies, Polastron surveys the annihilation of libraries from ancient Mesopotamia and China to potential problems looming with the cyber contents of today's virtual books.Although Polastron learned of lost libraries while writing a history of paper, it was the 1992 destruction of the National Library in Sarajevo that triggered his desire to explore all nooks and crannies of history in the attic of every civilization.Over the millennia, libraries crumbled to rubble during wars and bombings; theft and storage problems account for more losses. As countless books went up in smoke, others sank to a watery grave during shipwrecks and floods. Lamenting the loss of the ancient Alexandria library, the author covers books that perished during the Inquisition, the French Revolution and in Nazi Germany. Polastron's exhaustive research and vast scope make this detailed, authoritative study a revelatory read.

All History - Elizabeth Coatsworth - The Art of the Anglo-Saxon Gol...Goldsmith, Fine Metalwork in Anglo-Saxon England 2002.jpg

Throughout the Anglo-Saxon period, goldsmiths produced work of a high standard in both design and craftsmanship, both for personal adornment, and to embellish bookbindings, reliquaries, vessels and weapons. Some works are well known, particularly the magnificent gold and garnet regalia from Sutton Hoo, but this represents only a fraction even of the surviving work, and much more has been lost. This book is the first to look at the goldsmiths' products through the eyes of both a specialist in the period and a practical craftsman, combining close examination of the surface and structure of the objects with analysis of inscriptions and evidence for design, and with literary and visual sources of evidence for smiths and their work. Archaeological and documentary evidence for workshops, tools and working processes is also assessed, and up-to-date technical information on materials and techniques is juxtaposed with new practical research to throw light on manufacturing and decorative processes, and, more widely, to give a fresh idea of the position of the goldsmith in his society.

Frank McLynn - Napoleon, A Biography (2002).jpg

After visiting Corsica, Rousseau declared, "I have a presentiment that one day this small island will astonish Europe." Corsica did. Born there in 1769, Napoleon Bonaparte would convulse the Continent, precipitating thousands of books about him since. This latest, by British historian and Strathclyde University (U.K.) literature professor McLynn (Villa and Zapata; The Jacobites), is a crowded and persuasive one-volume life. McLynn's study but for his addictions to clich‚ and to repetition, and his labored leaning on both Freud and Jung is one the best of the new breed (since the 1978 discovery of Bonaparte's arsenic poisoning made earlier volumes obsolete). No hagiographer, McLynn is hard on Napoleon both as general and as statesman, and faults his failures to rein in his openly "venal" marshals, treacherous administrative elite and astonishingly rapacious siblings. Indifferent to people except as he needed their loyalty, this Napoleon's embodies ambitions not tempered by any idealism, and McLynn dismisses "credulous" previous biographers for seeing anything in him beyond a familiar French grasping for "grandeur" and "glory," apparent on a lesser level from Louis XIV to de Gaulle. To McLynn the difference is that Napoleon's dreams were truly Alexandrine that "His genius was of a kind that needed constant warfare to fuel it and... that all the hopes vested in him were illusory." While deftly exposing the material realities underlying the Napoleonic wars, McLynn also graphically describes the battles, suggesting that few (Austerlitz is an exception) demonstrate any authentic military brilliance. He is even more explicit about the general's tumultuous domestic and sexual life, in which Napoleon allegedly found little but masochistic satisfaction. "The true representative of the nation," Napoleon declared desperately in 1814, as his empire was collapsing around him, "is myself. France has more need of me than I have need of France." Such is still the case, McLynn claims, as France continues to cultivate his myth. Although McLynn's is a well-researched, convincing portrait, aficionados will find it not quite up to the standard of Alan Schom's 1997 Napoleon Bonaparte, which is both better written and more psychologically astute. 16 pages of b&w illustrations.

Georges Roux - Ancient Iraq (1992).jpg

Newly revised and now in its third edition, Ancient Iraq covers the political, cultural and socio-economic history of Mesopotamia from the days of prehistory to the Christian era and somewhat beyond. Dr. Roux describes for the general public and students the empires that have successively arisen and collapsed in Mesopotamia as well as the institutions, religions, sciences and daily life of its inhabitats. That so vast a subject makes such absorbing reading is due not only to the inevitable fascination of the past but also to the light, yet exact, touch of a talented historian.
