George Lynch - In Many Wars, by Many War Correspon dents (2010).jpg

"There are few people in the world who have more opportunity for getting close to the hot interesting things of one's time than the special correspondent of a great paper," George Lynch, a veteran British correspondent, wrote in Impressions of a War Correspondent, published in 1903. He made it all sound glorious, just the way war correspondents like to recount their experiences on the battlefield. But in a few months he had less to exult about. Lynch and a distinguished throng of foreign correspondents with high hopes of a good story assembled in Tokyo to cover the Russo-Japanese War--a monumental conflict that would mark the first modern defeat of a Western force by an Asian one--only to discover that the authorities would not let them "close to the hot interesting things."
Corralled in the Imperial Hotel, the journalists had nothing much to do except tell stories in the bar and write about local flora. A few of them, including Jack London and Richard Harding Davis, decided to contribute short autobiographical stories recounting their most exciting journalistic experiences for a book to be edited by Lynch and his American colleague, Frederick Palmer. The correspondents told their tales in different ways--prose, poems, sketches, and even a short play. Their stories recounted their routines, failures, and triumphs, including durviving battles and waiting to see action. One contributor imagines bewhiskered correspondents in 1950 still awaiting permission from Japan to go to the front--only to learn the war had been over for thirty-nine years.
Printed locally by a Japanese printer and largely forgotten until now, In Many Wars, by Many War Correspondents offers colorful stories and insights about the lives and personalities of some of history's most celebrated war correspondents. With a foreword by John Maxwell Hamilton that chronicles the circumstances under which the contributors compiled the book, this new edition opens a window into the fascinating world of foreign newsgathering at the turn of the twentieth century.

Barry Cunliffe - Druids; A Very Short Introduction (2010).jpg

The Druids have been known and discussed for at least 2400 years, first by Greek writers and later by the Romans, who came in contact with them in Gaul and Britain. According to these sources, they were a learned caste who officiated in religious ceremonies, taught the ancient wisdoms, and were revered as philosophers. But few figures flit so elusively through history, and the Druids remain enigmatic and puzzling to this day. In this Very Short Introduction, one of the leading authorities on British archaeology, Barry Cunliffe, takes the reader on a fast-paced look at the ever-fascinating story of the Druids, as seen in the context of the times and places in which they practiced. Sifting through the evidence, Cunliffe offers an expert's best guess as to what can be said and what can't be said about the Druids, discussing the origins of the Druids and the evidence for their beliefs and practices, why the nature of the druid caste changed quite dramatically over time, and how successive generations have seen them in very different ways.

Marshall Brown - Eighteenth-Century Literary Histo ry; An MLQ Reader (1999).jpg

Viewed as a crucible of modernity, the eighteenth century has become a special focus of Modern Language Quarterly, a journal that has led the revival of literary history as a subject for empirical study and theoretical reflection. The essays in this volume, which cover a broad cross-section of eighteenth-century literary history, represent the best studies of this period recently published in MLQ.
While examining different parts of the century, as well as different aspects and countries, contributors explore the intersection of literary studies with history, philosophy, psychology, and the visual arts. They discuss a creative range of topics, including feminism, nationalism, domestic ideology, the classical novel–drama–lyric poetry triad, and both aesthetic and philosophical writings. This span of subjects and approaches extends the focus of Eighteenth-Century Literary History beyond its period to project a spirit of inquiry onto literary history in general.

Edwin Bryant - The Indo-Aryan Controversy; Evidenc e and Inference in Indian History (2005).jpg

The major questions considered in this book are these: Are the Indo-Aryans outsiders or insiders? Did they migrate into India from Central Asia, and if not, where did they originate? Even more crucially, what is at stake in these accounts of ancient history? What issues of South Asian identity are involved? Can those of Indo-Aryan descent claim indigenous status? To what extent are the accounts of colonial historians valid? What is the role and authority of Indian scholarship in the post-colonial period? The scope and purpose of this volume is not to resolve this debate, but to survey the field and to include major figures from differing points of view, from archaeology and philosophy as well as political and intellectual history.

Anthony Goodman - Margery Kempe and Her World (200 2).jpg

Daughter of a mayor of King's Lynn, wife of a burgess there and mother of fourteen children, Margery Kempe (c. 1373-post 1438) was also a religious mystic and hysteric, who dictated her 'autobiography' to a scribe at the end of her life. In this history of her life, Anthony Goodman examines "The Book", to reconstruct as much of her conventional biography as the materials allow. Including her spiritual experiences, but focusing most particularly on her day-to-day life, he builds an intriguing picture of bourgeois society in late medieval Lynn, and the wider world of late medieval towns in England and Europe more generally.

Adrian Smith - The City of Coventry; A Twentieth C entury Icon (2006).jpg

Shattered by bombing in the World War II, Coventry was to rise as a model of urban regeneration and imaginative urban planning. Adrian Smith mixes memoir and meticulous scholarship to describe how his native city has inspired film-makers like Humphrey Jennings, poets and painters such as Philip Larkin and Terry Jones, and musicians as varied as Benjamin Britten and The Specials. Attractively presented, highly readable and with broad appeal, City of Coventry is a lively re-examination of an iconic city of the twentieth century illuminating the profound changes that engulfed industrial England during and after the war.

Emma Campbell - Medieval Saints' Lives; The Gift, Kinship and Community in Old French Hagiography (2 008).jpg

Contending that the study of hagiography is significant both for a consideration of medieval literature and for current theoretical debates in medieval studies, this book considers a range of Old French and Anglo-Norman texts, using modern theories of kinship and community to show how saints' lives construe social and sexual relations. Focusing on the depiction of the gift, kinship and community, the book maintains that social and sexual systems play a key role in vernacular hagiography.Such systems, along with the desires they produce and control, are, it is argued, central to hagiography's religious functions, particularly its role as a vehicle of community formation. In attempting to think beyond the limits of human relationships, saints' lives nonetheless create an environment in which queer desires and modes of connection become possible, suggesting that, in this case at least, the orthodox nurtures the queer. This book thus suggests not only that medieval hagiography is worthy of greater attention but also that this corpus might provide an important resource for theorizing community in its medieval contexts and for thinking it in the present. Emma Campbell is an RCUK Fellow in medieval French literature at the University of Warwick.

Els Rose - Ritual Memory; The Apocryphal Acts and Liturgical Commemoration in the Early Medieval Wes t (c.500-1215) (2009).jpg

All History - Els Rose - Ritual Memory The Apocryphal Acts and Litu...emoration in the Early Medieval West c.500-1215 2009.jpg

"Ritual Memory" brings together two areas of study which have hitherto rarely been studied in comparison: liturgy and the apocryphal Acts of the apostles. The book gives an analysis of the liturgical celebration of the apostles in the medieval West and examines the incorporation of the apocrypha in practices of ritual commemoration. It reveals the role that liturgy played in the transmission of the apocryphal Acts and visualises the way these narrative traditions developed and changed through their incorporation into a ritual context. The result is a dynamic picture of the ritual reception of the extra-canonical Acts in the Latin Middle Ages, where the apocryphal legends about the apostolic past were approached as memorable traditions on the origins of Christianity.

Julia M. Walker - The Elizabeth Icon, 1603-2003 (2 004).jpg

Elizabeth I as Icon examines how the image and memory of the queen has been used and viewed in the 400 years since her death. Beginning with how Elizabeth created her iconic status during her reign, the book goes on to explore ways in which this image has evolved over the years. Walker shows that centuries of social, cultural and political agenda have been given public appeal by the use of the dead queen's image, and looks at her representation within children's literature, the suffragette movement, the two world wars, and within popular culture, including the Hollywood film Elizabeth.

Osprey - Command 08 - Marcus Cowper - Henry V (201 0).jpeg

Immortalised in the plays of Shakespeare, Henry V is the most famous and celebrated of all England's medieval monarchs. Although his most famous battles and conquests took place in France, Henry, as was common amongst medieval aristocracy, was introduced to battle at an early age when he fought with his father, Henry IV, at the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. On his accession to the throne, Henry turned his attention towards foreign affairs and the English position in France. This title will examine Henry's key battles and sieges, how he systematically extended English control throughout northern France and how he was perceived by his contemporaries as a military leader. It will also deal with his controversial military decisions, such as the slaughter of the French prisoners at Agincourt.

Claire Brock - The Feminization of Fame 1750-1830 (2006).jpg

The Feminization of Fame 1750-1830 addresses the literary, cultural and historical questions surrounding the reconceptualization of fame between 1750-1830. As the first sustained scholarly analysis of fame in this period, this interdisciplinary book examines genres from history writing to literature, public and private memoirs to political treatises in English and in French in order to explore 'The age of personality's' obsession with instantaneous publicity. In an age of expanding print culture, the classical notion of posthumous reward was becoming increasingly open to question, as the need 'to be brilliant', as Hazlitt put it, in the contemporary moment became all.

Richard Dacre Archer-Hind, Robert Drew Hicks - Cam bridge Compositions; Greek and Latin (2009).jpg

Original composition in classical languages was an important and much admired skill in the Victorian education system. In public schools and university Classics courses it was a key part of the curriculum, not only teaching the structure of the ancient languages themselves but also honing rhetorical skills. This 1899 anthology of selections from English literature translated into Greek and Latin prose and verse, includes contributions from a whole generation of late Victorian classical scholars at Cambridge: Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb and his successor as Regius Professor of Greek, Henry Jackson, James Adam, editor of Plato, Samuel Butcher, founder of the English Classical Association and President of the British Academy in 1909-10, a number of younger scholars and even one female lecturer. This would have been a model volume for Victorian students and remains useful today for those wanting to improve both comprehension and composition in the classical languages.

Heather Ingman - A History of the Irish Short Stor y (2009).jpg

Though the short story is often regarded as central to the Irish canon, this 2009 text was the first comprehensive study of the genre for many years. Heather Ingman traces the development of the modern short story in Ireland from its beginnings in the nineteenth century to the present day. Her study analyses the material circumstances surrounding publication, examining the role of magazines and editors in shaping the form. Ingman incorporates recent critical thinking on the short story, traces international connections, and gives a central part to Irish women's short stories. Each chapter concludes with a detailed analysis of key stories from the period discussed, featuring Joyce, Edna O'Brien and John McGahern, among others. With its comprehensive bibliography and biographies of authors, this volume will be a key work of reference for scholars and students both of Irish fiction and of the modern short story as a genre.

Alan I. Forrest - The Legacy of the French Revolut ionary Wars; The Nation-in-Arms in French Republic an Memory (2009).jpg

All History - Alan I. Forrest - The Legacy of the French Revolution...s The Nation-in-Arms in French Republican Memory 2009.jpg

A major contribution to the study of collective identity and memory in France, this book examines a French republican myth: the belief that the nation can be adequately defended only by its own citizens, in the manner of the French revolutionaries of 1793. Alan Forrest examines the image of the citizen army reflected in political speeches, school textbooks, art and literature across the nineteenth century. He reveals that the image appealed to notions of equality and social justice, and with time it expanded to incorporate Napoleon's victorious legions, the partisans who repelled the German invader in 1814 and the people of Paris who rose in arms to defend the Republic in 1870. More recently it has risked being marginalized by military technology and by the realities of colonial warfare, but its influence can still be seen in the propaganda of the Great War and of the French Resistance under Vichy.

Daniel Panzac - The Barbary Corsairs; The End of a Legend, 1800-1820 (2004).jpg

From 1516 to 1830, the Barbary corsairs dominated the Ottoman provinces of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. The years between 1800-1820 were crucial. Until 1805, a spectacular revival of privateering allows the author to present the men, the practices and the results gained by the privateers. From 1805 to 1814, the Maghrib states gave up a great part of privateering on behalf of transportation and seaborne trade, taking advantage of their neutrality during the Napoleonic wars. The peace in 1814 and the internal weaknesses of the regencies carried away this original attempt. After Lord Exmouth's expedition in 1816, for the first time since three centuries, the Maghrib is prohibited from any seaborne activities and under the mercy of Europe.

Roberta Barker - Early Modern Tragedy, Gender and Performance, 1984-2000; The Destined Livery (2007).jpg

This book examines the representation of gender in selected recent performances of early modern tragedy. In the process, it elaborates a model of critically engaged spectatorship that will allow for the complexity and potential of such cultural productions, and shows how encounters between contemporary actors and early modern playtexts--often dismissed as merely conservative - can in fact help to uncover the instability and historical contingency of gender norms past and present.

David Allan - Commonplace Books and Reading in Geo rgian England (2010).jpg

This pioneering exploration of Georgian men and women's experiences as readers explores their use of commonplace books for recording favourite passages and reflecting upon what they had read, revealing forgotten aspects of their complicated relationship with the printed word. It shows how indebted English readers often remained to techniques for handling, absorbing and thinking about texts that were rooted in classical antiquity, in Renaissance humanism and in a substantially oral culture. It also reveals how a series of related assumptions about the nature and purpose of reading influenced the roles that literature played in English society in the ages of Addison, Johnson and Byron; how the habits and procedures required by commonplacing affected readers' tastes and so helped shape literary fashions; and how the experience of reading and responding to texts increasingly encouraged literate men and women to imagine themselves as members of a polite, responsible and critically aware public.
