Ever since we started huddling together in communities, the story of human history has been inextricably entwined with the story of microbes. They have evolved and spread amongst us, shaping our culture through infection, disease, and pandemic. At the same time, our changing human culture has itself influenced the evolutionary path of microbes. Dorothy H. Crawford here shows that one cannot be truly understood without the other. Beginning with a dramatic account of the SARS pandemic at the start of the 21st century, she takes us back in time to follow the interlinked history of microbes and man, taking an up-to-date look at ancient plagues and epidemics, and identifying key changes in the way humans have lived - such as our move from hunter-gatherer to farmer to city-dweller - which made us vulnerable to microbe attack. Douglas Porch is an American military historian and academic. He currently serves as a Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School. and former Chair of the Department of National Security Affairs for the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California

Biography

He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee in 1967 and a Ph. D. from Cambridge University in 1972. He has been a professor of strategy at the Naval War College, a guest lecturer at the Marine Corps University, a post-doctoral research fellow at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and the Mark W. Clark Professor of History at The Citadel.[1]

Dr. Porch has written more than eight books and numerous other publications, mostly about French military history and French Colonialism. These books have been published in both French and English.

In the eighteenth century, the English common law courts laid the foundation that continues to support present-day Anglo-American law. Lord Mansfield, Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, 1756-1788, was the dominant judicial force behind these developments. In this abridgment of his two-volume book, The Mansfield Manuscripts and the Growth of English Law in the Eighteenth Century, James Oldham presents the fundamentals of the English common law during this period, with a detailed description of the operational features of the common law courts. We are attracted to change--it captures the eye much more than stability. The eleven essays in this collection (written by some of the biggest names in the field of European history, such as Princeton's Harold James, U.C. Berkeley's Martin Jay, and Richard Overy of King's College, London) focus on various aspects of European society, from politics and economics to high culture and social structures, and analyze both the changes and the engines of those changes. In his standout essay on the changing nature of warfare, 1789-1918, Hew Strachan argues that this military modernization cannot simply be explained by new technology and that more emphasis must be placed on changing ideas. Strachan and the other authors for the most part eschew jargon and present an authoritative set of essays complemented by over 240 arresting color and black-and-white illustrations. Many of the chapters would be suitable readings for upper-division history courses, and the thorough index, detailed chronology, and suggestions for further reading would be a great help to students. This book is accessible to the general reader while remaining valuable to the scholar--and is immensely readable to boot.

Virtually all discussions of the problematic character of youth and society in twentieth century Germany begin with the middle class Wandervogel and end with the Hitler Youth. In this revisionist study Derek S. Linton argues that youth emerged as an important social problem around 1900 without any reference to the Wandervogel. Instead, fears of socialism, urban disorder, mass culture, and youthful independence prompted Liberal social reformers to constitute young workers as a social problem. Linton traces the "natural history" of this social problem from recognition to institutional reform. He especially explores such institutions as mandatory evening vocational schools and adult sponsored youth clubs designed to integrate young workers in Wilhelmine society. Based on his analysis of youth reform, Linton ends by discussing some of the recent debates over the reformability of Imperial Germany and relations between the Empire and the Nazi regime.

Amid the charged debate over whether-and how-the Holocaust can be represented, films about fascism, nazis, and the Final Solution keep coming. And in works by filmmakers from Bertolucci to Spielberg, debauched images of nazi and fascist eroticism, symbols of violence and immorality, often bear an uncanny resemblance to the images and symbols once used by the fascists themselves to demarcate racial, sexual, and political others. This book exposes the "madness" inherent in such a course, which attests to the impossibility of disengaging visual and rhetorical constructions from political, ideological, and moral codes. In a brilliant analysis with ramifications far beyond the realm of film, Kriss Ravetto argues that contemporary discourses using such devices actually continue unacknowledged rhetorical, moral, and visual analogies of the past. Against postwar fictional and historical accounts of World War II in which generic images of evil characterize the nazi and the fascist, Ravetto sets the different, more complex approach of such filmmakers as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Liliana Cavani, and Lina Wertmüller. Rather than reassuring viewers of the triumph of the forces of Good over the forces of Evil and the reinstitution of ethical values, these filmmakers confound the binary oppositions that produce clear and identifiable heroes and villains. Here we see how their work-complicating conventions of gender identity, class identifications, and the economy of victim and victimizer-disturbs rather than reassures the audience seeking relief from a sense of "bad history." Drawing on history, philosophy, critical theory, film, literature, and art, Ravetto demonstrates the complex relationship of thinking about fascism with moral discourse, sexual politics, and economic practices. Her book asks us to think deeply about what it means to say that we have conquered fascism, when the aesthetics of fascism still describe and determine how we look at political figures and global events.

Could the rag-tag defenders hold out long enough for the gathering relief force to reach them? This book describes the desperate series of events as the multinational force rushed to their rescue.

Bokserów powstanie, powstanie ludowe w północno-wschodnich Chinach 1899-1901, skierowane przeciwko mandżurskiej dynastii Qing oraz wzrastającym wpływom politycznym i gospodarczym obcych mocarstw w Chinach. Nastroje antyzachodnie, panujące w najniższych warstwach społeczeństwa przyczyniły się do powstawania licznych tajnych związków. Jeden z nich, Yihequan ("pięść w imię sprawiedliwości i pokoju" - stąd nazwa powstania) zapoczątkował zbrojne wystąpienia w prowincji Shandong, które szybko się rozprzestrzeniły. W VI 1900 powstańcy zaatakowali dzielnicę ambasad w Pekinie, zabijając m.in. posła niemieckiego C. von Kettlera, co stało się dla mocarstw zach. pretekstem do wysłania ekspedycji wojskowych. 40-tysięczny korpus ekspedycyjny (oddziały niemieckie, brytyjskie, japońskie, rosyjskie, amerykańskie, francuskie oraz symboliczne włoskie i austriacko-węgierskie), dowodzony przez niemieckiego feldmarszałka A. von Waldersee, zdobył w VIII tegoż roku stolicę, a następnie przez kilka miesięcy pacyfikował prowincje ogarnięte powstaniem bokserów. Rebelia zakończona została zawarciem 7 IX 1901 tzw. protokołu końcowego, nakładającego na Chiny wiele ograniczeń, m.in. rząd chiński zobowiązywał się do wypłacenia interwentom kontrybucji wojennych oraz zwalczania ruchów wymierzonych przeciwko cudzoziemcom, zezwolono także państwom biorącym udział w ekspedycji na pozostawienie oddziałów wojskowych w europejskiej dzielnicy Pekinu oraz wzdłuż linii kolejowej Pekin-Tianjin.
