Stalinism and the Politics of Mobilization offers a new interpretation of Bolshevik ideology, examines its relationship with Soviet politics between 1917 and 1939, and sheds new light on the origins of the political violence of the late 1930s. While it challenges older views that the Stalinist system and the Terror were the product of a coherent Marxist-Leninist blueprint, imposed by a group of committed ideologues, it argues that ideas mattered in Bolshevik politics and that there are strong continuities between the politics of the revolutionary period and those of the 1930s. By exploring divisions within the party over several issues, including class, the relations between elites and masses, and economic policy, David Priestland shows how a number of ideological trends emerged within Bolshevik politics, and how they were related to political and economic interests and strategies. He also argues that central to the launching of the Terror was the leadership's commitment to a strategy of mobilization, and to a view of politics that ultimately derived from the left Bolshevism of the revolutionary period.

Perestroika (restructuring) presents Gorbachev's aspirations and major policies. "Democratization" of management and society is a central if undefined goal. The author admits past stagnation in domestic, and mistakes in foreign, policy. Instead of attaining communism by the end of the century, he aspires for the U.S.S.R. to reach the "world level" of science and technologyappealing to Westerners. But Perestroika reflects the limitations of present policy concerning "unanimity" among top leaders, agricultural reform, and Afghanistan. Despite its shortcomings, the book offers a valuable statement about Soviet policy. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

katastrofa nuklearna mająca miejsce 26 kwietnia 1986, do której doszło w wyniku wybuchu wodoru[1] z reaktora jądrowego bloku nr 4 elektrowni atomowej w Czarnobylu. Ocenia się, że była to największa katastrofa w historii energetyki jądrowej i jedna z największych katastrof przemysłowych XX wieku. Jest to jednocześnie jedyny incydent w dziejach, który został zakwalifikowany do siódmego, najwyższego stopnia w skali INES. W wyniku awarii skażeniu promieniotwórczemu uległ obszar od 125 000 do 146 000 km2 terenu na pograniczu Białorusi, Ukrainy i Rosji, a wyemitowana z uszkodzonego reaktora chmura radioaktywna rozprzestrzeniła się po całej Europie. This book examines the introduction of Marxist philosophy to China from the early 1920s to the mid 1940s. It does this through an examination of the philosophical activities and writings of four Chinese Marxist philosophers central to this process. These are Qu Qiubai, Ai Siqi, Li Da and Mao Zedong. The book sets the philosophical writings of these philosophers in the context of the development of Marxist philosophy internationally, and examines particularly the influence on these philosophers of Soviet Marxist philosophy. It argues that these Chinese Marxist philosophers’ interpretations of Marxist philosophy were quite orthodox when judged by the standards of contemporary Soviet Marxism. The book explores core themes in Marxist philosophy in China, including the dilemma of determinism, and investigates the way in which these Chinese Marxist philosophers sought a formula for the ‘Sinification’ of Marxist philosophy that both retained the universal dimensions of Marxism and allowed its application to the Chinese context. The book concludes with analysis of the role of the Yanan New Philosophy Association in developing from Soviet Marxist philosophy the philosophical dimension of Mao Zedong Thought, the official ideology of the Chinese Communist Party after 1945.

Anything but a dry history, it reflects the high stakes, uncertain distribution of forces and hidden landscapes of risk that forged the Cold War era, dominated by centuries-old concerns for security, self-determination and national honor among all the contending powers. The copious details concern nuances of maneuver, positioning and interpretation that make for compelling drama. Drawing on a full range of sourcesAfrom diplomatic records, to personal recollections and his own interviewsASmyser provides an authoritative, remarkably engaging account. Its two weaknesses are the absence of any discussion of the persistence and resurgence of fascism in Germany, and an insider's insularity of focus and outlook. Smyser faithfully notes how leading figures who kept Berliners' (and all Germans') hopes aliveAGeneral Lucius Clay during the Berlin airlift, JFK with his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, Willy Brandt with his Ost-PolitikAdid so because their vision and instinct transcended the parameters of normal diplomatic thinking. Nevertheless, in the quality of its prose and the depth of its excavations into diplomatic and political activity, this is a valuable and exciting contribution.
