The Japanese conquest of the Pacific comprised of a complex series of widely scattered operations intended to neutralize American, Commonwealth, and Dutch forces, seize regions rich in economic resources, and secure an outer defense line for the "Greater Southeast Asia Co-prosperity Sphere." Albeit victorious, the forces deployed from Japan and China were not always ideally trained and equipped for the challenging conditions they encountered. This book, the first of several covering the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II, examines the forces in existence at the beginning of the war, and task organization for the conquest of the Philippines, New Guinea, the South Seas area, and the Dutch East Indies, from December 1941 to the Battle of Midway in June 1942.

About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group until reassigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70. A highly respected and established author, Gordon is now a civilian contract Special Operations Forces Intelligence Specialist at the Army's Joint Readiness Center, Ft Polk

Since the rise of the dime museum in the 19th century, tattooed bodies have been parading across stages both live and mediated. In so doing, the book combines the craft of cultural analysis with theories of performance while also generating a largely untold history of the tattooed body on display in the United States. Because of this unique combination, the book is truly interdisciplinary and appeals to multiple audiences. At the same time, it sustains a deep theoretical engagement with the central concepts of social and visual agency and the disruption of restrictive social norms. Part of the Contemporary World Issues series, this volume examines various aspects of censorship and "related issues of freedom of expression, obscenity, pornography, standards of decency, and liberty and democracy." The introduction includes a synopsis of censorship in America beginning in 1734 when a newspaper publisher was jailed for writing satirical commentaries about New York's colonial governor. The fine line between freedom of expression and society's desire to protect itself is explored briefly. The author goes on to look at textbook controversies, hate speech, music lyrics disputes, artistic freedom, the news media, and the Internet. A time line of relevant censorship issues is included, along with brief biographical sketches of the historic or contemporary individuals involved. Supreme Court decisions are summarized, and there are several graphs and charts that illustrate challenges to materials. Also included are related documents such as ALA's "Bill of Rights," Family Friendly Library's "Charter for a Family Friendly Library System," and the Community Decency Act.

If we continue to burn oil for much of our energy needs, despite our science and foreknowledge, we could still end up like them.

The infamous "pain at the pump" runs much deeper than our wallets, argues Terry Tamminen, former Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency and current Special Assistant to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Petroleum may power our cars and heat our homes, but it also contributes to birth defects and disorders like asthma and emphysema, not to mention cancer. In Lives Per Gallon, Tamminen takes a hard look at these and other health, environmental, and national security costs hidden in every barrel of oil.

While the petroleum industry is raking in huge profits, Tamminen shows, it is studiously avoiding measures that would lessen the hazards of its products.
