In Hot dog, well-known food historian Bruce Kraig recounts the history of this popular dish, from the origin of the sausage some 20,000 years ago, to the evolution of the modern form of the hot dog, and its central place in American and world culture today. The author examines the many types of hot dog sausage, including American varieties such as the Hebrew National, Vienna, Kahn or Morrell in Cincinnati, Pearl Brand (in Boston) and Sabrett, as well as international variants such as Italian bologna and German bockwurst. Hotdog also explores sometimes apocryphal tales of the hot dog in history: how the dish got its name for example, and how Queen Elizabeth II was served hot dogs during her visit to the White House in the 1950s. Packed with tasty facts and piquant observations, many illustrations and a selection of tempting recipes, this book shows how this seemingly simple food has a rich history, and is fundamentally linked to America's mythology of itself.

Going beyond purely economic factors, this valuable study elaborates the full historical and political context in which the globalization of textiles and apparel has taken place. Rosen takes a critical look at the promises of prosperity, both in the U.S. and in developing countries, made by advocates for the global expansion of these industries. She offers evidence to suggest that this process may inevitably create new and more extreme forms of poverty.

In this innovative book, Stephen P. Rice offers a new understanding of class formation in America during the several decades before the Civil War. This was the period in the nation's early industrial development when travel by steamboat became commonplace, when the railroad altered concepts of space and time, and when Americans experienced the beginnings of factory production. These disorienting changes raised a host of questions about what machinery would accomplish. Would it promote equality or widen the distance between rich and poor? Among the most contentious questions were those focusing on the social consequences of mechanization: while machine enthusiasts touted the extent to which machines would free workers from toil, others pointed out that people needed to tend machines, and that that work was fundamentally degrading and exploitative. Minding the Machine shows how members of a new middle class laid claim to their social authority and minimized the potential for class conflict by playing out class relations on less contested social and technical terrains. As they did so, they defined relations between shopowners--and the overseers, foremen, or managers they employed--and wage workers as analogous to relations between head and hand, between mind and body, and between human and machine. Rice presents fascinating discussions of the mechanics' institute movement, the manual labor school movement, popular physiology reformers, and efforts to solve the seemingly intractable problem of steam boiler explosions. His eloquent narrative demonstrates that class is as much about the comprehension of social relations as it is about the making of social relations, and that class formation needs to be understood not only as a social struggle but as a conceptual struggle.

Dostawy uzbrojenia regulowała ustawa Lend-Lease ogłoszona przez prezydenta USA F. D. Roosevelta wiosną 1941 roku. Niniejsze opracowanie omawia dostawy sprzętu pancernego i samochodów z Wielkiej Brytanii i Kanady, część druga będzie omawiała sprzęt dostarczony przez USA. Do chwili obecnejprob-lematyka użycia sprzętu wojskowego produkcji zachodniej na froncie wschodnim nie doczekała się stosownego omówienia. Na przeszkodzie stały zamknięte archiwa sowieckie, a potem rosyjskie. Opracowanie przybliża Czytelnikowi temat dostaw sprzętu z Wielkiej Brytanii i USA do ZSRS. Książka jest bogato ilustrowana unikalnymi fotografiami i planszami barwnymi przedstawiającymi malowanie ochronne (kamuflaż) omawianych pojazdów bojowych.

The patch is a customized emblem designed specifically for a particular organization. An emblem is often displayed on patches, decals, plaques and other memorabilia. Pride and comradery in the crew is a direct result of the patch as a daily reminder that a specific unit is the best in the Navy. In the past, patches were designed by and for the unit members. Although not approved by Navy Regulations until the 1950s, for Unofficial use only, Navy units have proudly displayed their patches since World War II. Today, patches are both Official and Unofficial. Despite the plethora of writing about jazz, little attention has been paid to what musicians themselves wrote and said about their practice. An implicit division of labor has emerged where, for the most part, black artists invent and play music while white writers provide the commentary. Eric Porter overturns this tendency in his creative intellectual history of African American musicians. He foregrounds the often-ignored ideas of these artists, analyzing them in the context of meanings circulating around jazz, as well as in relationship to broader currents in African American thought. Porter examines several crucial moments in the history of jazz: the formative years of the 1920s and 1930s; the emergence of bebop; the political and experimental projects of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s; and the debates surrounding Jazz at Lincoln Center under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. Louis Armstrong, Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Duke Ellington, W.C. Handy, Yusef Lateef, Abbey Lincoln, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Wadada Leo Smith, Mary Lou Williams, and Reggie Workman also feature prominently in this book. The wealth of information Porter uncovers shows how these musicians have expressed themselves in print; actively shaped the institutional structures through which the music is created, distributed, and consumed, and how they aligned themselves with other artists and activists, and how they were influenced by forces of class and gender. What Is This Thing Called Jazz? challenges interpretive orthodoxies by showing how much black jazz musicians have struggled against both the racism of the dominant culture and the prescriptive definitions of racial authenticity propagated by the music's supporters, both white and black.
