THE MISSION OF MARINER 10 was unique in several ways. It was the first American spacecraft to take photographs of Venus. It was the first to use the gravity and motion of one planet to alter the flight path of a spacecraft and send it to another planet. It was the first to explore the planet Mercury, which was previously but a hazy image in the best Earth-based telescope pictures. The success of Mariner 10 in attaining&emdash; and exceeding&emdash;its goals is attributable to the dedicated effort of the relatively small but exceedingly competent and highly motivated group of men and women from universities, industry, and government who made up the Mariner Venus/ Mercury 1973 project team.

Mitnick is the most famous computer hacker in the world. Since his first arrest in 1981, at age 17, he has spent nearly half his adult life either in prison or as a fugitive. He has been the subject of three books and his alleged 1982 hack into NORAD inspired the movie War Games. Since his plea-bargain release in 2000, he says he has reformed and is devoting his talents to helping computer security. It's not clear whether this book is a means toward that end or a, wink-wink, fictionalized account of his exploits, with his name changed to protect his parole terms. Either way, it's a tour de force, a series of tales of how some old-fashioned blarney and high-tech skills can pry any information from anyone. As entertainment, it's like reading the climaxes of a dozen complex thrillers, one after the other. As a security education, it's a great series of cautionary tales; however, the advice to employees not to give anyone their passwords is bland compared to the depth and energy of Mitnick's descriptions of how he actually hacked into systems. As a manual for a would-be hacker, it's dated and nonspecific better stuff is available on the Internet but it teaches the timeless spirit of the hack. Between the lines, a portrait emerges of the old-fashioned hacker stereotype: a socially challenged, obsessive loser addicted to an intoxicating sense of power that comes only from stalking and spying.

Subsequent sections treat economic sectors, agriculture, industry, services, international trade, money, poverty and wealth, working conditions, the country's history and economic development (in time-line format), and future trends. A fifteenth subdivision looks at the economies of any dependencies, colonies, or territories. A country-specific bibliography of print and electronic sources completes each entry.

‘Our Bells are worn threadbare with ringing for victory’, wrote Horace Walpole after receiving news of Wolfe’s victory at Quebec in October 1759. Traditional accounts of the Seven Years’ War have emphasized the contribution of the Elder Pitt to the success of Britain in Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, India and the Far East.

The Bells of Victory argues that such a view is misguided and that, far from exercising single-handed control, Pitt’s influence was necessarily circumscribed. The margin between military success and failure was extremely small, and the British authorities worked within constraints imposed by constitutional propriety and political expediency. Effective government action was the result of teamwork by many individuals in the diverse fields of diplomacy, politics, finance, the army, navy, ordnance and commissariat.

Between 1820 and the Civil War, the upper Mississippi valley was at the center of national and international attention. At the edge of the northern frontier, this area, known as "The Great West," was the destination of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from the East and from northern Europe. This book analyzes the development, maturation, growth, and sudden decline of the distinctive regional urban-economic system that developed in this area. Drawing from a variety of methods used in historical geography, economic history, systems analysis, and social and urban history, the author analyzes how early settlement patterns were affected by experience, climate, and geography, and, in turn, shaped the initial patterns of economic, urban, and transportation development. As the systems developed, towns became more functionally differentiated and several towns emerged as the more important competitors for regional hinterland control. The center of the analysis focuses on the efforts of these river towns to respond to a variety of settlement, economic, and transport network forces that worked in favor of the regional entrepots of Chicago and St. Louis.
