Faith in America - Shelley M. Buxbaum, Sara E. Kar esh - Jewish Faith in America (2003).jpg

AMERICA BEGINS A NEW MILLENNIUM AS ONE OF THE MOST RELIGIOUSLY
diverse nations of all time. Nowhere else in the world do so many people—offered a
choice free from government influence—identify with such a wide range of religious
and spiritual communities. Nowhere else has the human search for meaning been
so varied. In America today, there are communities and centers for worship repre-
senting all of the world’s religions.
The American landscape is dotted with churches, temples, synagogues, and
mosques. Zen Buddhist zendos sit next to Pentecostal tabernacles. Hasidic Jews walk
the streets with Hindu swamis. Most amazing of all, relatively little conflict has oc-
curred among religions in America. This fact, combined with a high level of tolerance
of one another’s beliefs and practices, has let America produce people of goodwill
ready to try to resolve any tensions that might emerge.
The Faith in America series celebrates America’s diverse religious heritage.
People of faith and ideals who longed for a better world have created a unique society
where freedom of religious expression is a keynote of culture. The freedom that Amer-
ica offers to people of faith means that not only have ancient religions found a home
here, but that newer ways of expressing spirituality have also taken root. From huge
churches in large cities to small spiritual communities in towns and villages, faith in
America has never been stronger. The paths that different religions have taken through
American history is just one of the stories readers will find in this series.

Faith in America - Michael Garrett, J.T. Garrett - Native American Faith in America (2003).jpg

Few populations around the world have been as deeply affected by outside cultures as Native Americans. The wide variety of people who lived in America prior to Western migration possessed an equally wide variety of faith practices and beliefs. This book is about how those beliefs began, how they changed due to the influence of outside forces, and how Native Americans today are working to preserve their faiths. Tied deeply to the land and to nature, Native American faiths share some common traits. Native American Faith in America explores these basic beliefs, the "coming of the long knives," and the impact of Western expansion, along with the ways that Native Americans and their faiths were deeply changed by this new civilization on their land. As the years have passed, many Native American ways have come into the general culture, influencing everything from fashion and music to medicine and sports. The dominant American culture continues to affect the social lives of Native Americans, both on reservations and elsewhere, while the sacred sites of some tribes have been the source of great controversy. In the political world, Native Americans have been very active, and most of this political work, from the American Indian Movement to today's reservation casinos, is based in faith and belief. Finally, the book focuses on how Native Americans young and old are working to ensure that their faiths and beliefs do not die out as some of their languages and customs have.

Faith in America - Michael Burgan - Buddhist Faith in America (2003).jpg

In America today, for the first time in world history, every major form of Buddhism is practiced in one nation. Buddhist Faith in America describes how this ancient faith has been as deeply affected by America as America has been affected by it. Buddhism is one of the world's oldest and most widely-practiced faiths, but in America it has a relatively short history. However, in that short time, the faith has influenced Americans from all walks of life - from celebrities and sports stars to ordinary people, many Americans have embraced the philosophy behind Buddhism. This book explores how Asian Immigrants have brought Buddhism to America and enjoyed the freedom to practice their beliefs without constraints. It describes the basic tenets of the three major schools of Buddhism; the relationship between various Buddhist immigrant communities and American Buddhists; the emergence of the socially engaged Buddhist; and Buddhism's influence on American culture and society.

Faith in America - J. Gordon Melton - Protestant F aith in America (2003).jpg

America is often thought of as a Protestant nation and slightly more than half of the population currently profess their membership in a church rooted in the original Protestant movement of the 16th century. Protestants established their churches in the American colonies early on, their descendents fought in the American Revolution, and they took the lead in conquering the continent and civilizing the frontier. Their culture dominated the land through the 19th century and it continues to wield a vast influence on the direction of American life even today. This volume focuses on those churches that trace their history to the Reformation within the Roman Catholic Church, including the Lutheran, Reformed, Presbyterian, Congregational, and Episcopal churches. More specifically, it explores the Protestant faith and addresses the impact these churches and their members have had on American culture and society. It discusses the leading role of Protestants in the founding of many of the country's most prestigious institutions of higher learning, including Harvard, Yale, Rutgers, and Princeton. It also looks at the significant positions Protestants maintain in business, politics, and intellectual society. Protestant Faith in America offers an objective look at this group that has contributed much in developing a strong America.

Faith in America - Chester Gillis - Catholic Faith in America (2003).jpg

Grade 6 Up-While this is a concise and sometimes fascinating introduction, the information isn't always accurate. Gillis presents Catholic views on culture, social issues, and politics; a brief biographical list of important Catholic Americans; a look at beliefs and practices; and a short history of the church in America. The book concludes with a glance at what the future holds for the church, including a discussion of the recent scandals. The tone is reportorial and avoids making judgments, the information is presented in a clear and easy to follow manner, and the black-and-white photos are well chosen for effect. Unfortunately, the author refers twice to a monk as "a type of priest" who lives in a monastery. However, many monks are not priests. Being one does not necessitate the other. And he makes odd sweeping statements like: "Because of fears that the church might object, The Ten Commandments is the last movie with a religious theme that some older Catholics have seen." What is that supposed to mean? How many older Catholics is "some"? And how many were interviewed to arrive at such a vague conclusion? There is also a problem with the index. Supposedly, information on Dorothy Day can be found on pages 94-95, but those pages show an uncaptioned picture of a woman serving soup to what appear to be a couple of men in cassocks and the text includes information about John Carroll. Wait for something better on this topic to come along.

Jonathan Rosenbaum - Movie Wars, How Hollywood and the Media Limit What Movies We Can See (2002).jpg

Is the cinema, as writers from David Denby to Susan Sontag have claimed, really dead? Contrary to what we have been led to believe, films are better than ever-we just can't see the good ones. Movie Wars cogently explains how movies are packaged, distributed, and promoted, and how, at every stage of the process, the potential moviegoer is treated with contempt. Using examples ranging from the New York Times's coverage of the Cannes film festival to the anticommercial practices of Orson Welles, Movie Wars details the workings of the powerful forces that are in the process of ruining our precious cinematic culture and heritage, and the counterforces that have begun to fight back.

David Blumenthal, James A. Morone - The Heart of P ower, Health and Politics in the Oval Office (2009 ).jpg

Even the most powerful men in the world are human--they get sick, take dubious drugs, drink too much, contemplate suicide, fret about ailing parents, and bury people they love. Young Richard Nixon watched two brothers die of tuberculosis, even while doctors monitored a suspicious shadow on his own lungs. John Kennedy received last rites four times as an adult, and Lyndon Johnson suffered a "belly buster" of a heart attack. David Blumenthal and James A. Morone explore how modern presidents have wrestled with their own mortality--and how they have taken this most human experience to heart as they faced the difficult politics of health care. Drawing on a trove of newly released White House tapes, on extensive interviews with White House staff, and on dramatic archival material that has only recently come to light, The Heart of Power explores the hidden ways in which presidents shape our destinies through their own experiences. Taking a close look at Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, the book shows what history can teach us as we confront the health care challenges of the twenty-first century.

Stephen Trimble - Bargaining for Eden, The Fight f or the Last Open Spaces in America (2008).jpg

Beginning with an Olympic ski race in northern Utah, this heartfelt book from award-winning writer and photographer Stephen Trimble takes a penetrating look at the battles raging over the land--and the soul--of the American West. Bargaining for Eden investigates the high-profile story of a reclusive billionaire who worked relentlessly to acquire public land for his ski resort and to host the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In a gripping, character-driven narrative, based on extensive interviews, Trimble tells of the land exchange deal that ensued, one of the largest and most controversial in U.S. history, as he deftly explores the inner conflicts, paradoxes, and greed at the heart of land-use disputes from the back rooms of Washington to the grassroots efforts of passionate citizens. Into this mix, Trimble weaves the personal story of how he, a lifelong environmentalist, ironically became a landowner and developer himself, and began to explore the ethics of ownership anew. We travel with Trimble in a fascinating journey that becomes, in the end, a hopeful credo to guide citizens and communities seeking to reinvent their relationship with the belovedAmerican landscape.

Audrey Fisch - The Cambridge Companion to the Afri can American Slave Narrative (2007).jpg

The slave narrative has become a crucial genre within African American literary studies and an invaluable record of the experience and history of slavery in the United States. This Companion examines the slave narrative's relation to British and American abolitionism, Anglo-American literary traditions such as autobiography and sentimental literature, and the larger African American literary tradition. Special attention is paid to leading exponents of the genre such as Olaudah Equiano, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs, as well as many other, less well known examples. Further essays explore the rediscovery of the slave narrative and its subsequent critical reception, as well as the uses to which the genre is put by modern authors such as Toni Morrison. With its chronology and guide to further reading, the Companion provides both an easy entry point for students new to the subject and comprehensive coverage and original insights for scholars in the field.

01 - USA - John P. Geyman - The Corporate Transformation of Health...lth Care, Can the Public Interest Still Be Served 2004.jpg

The author explores how the corporate transformation of hospitals, HMOs, and the insurance and pharmaceutical industries has resulted in reduction in services, dangerous cost cutting, poor regulation, and corrupt research. He sheds light on the political lobbying and media manipulation that keeps the present system in place. Exposing the shortcomings of reform proposals that do little to alter the status quo, he makes a case for a workable single-payer system. This is an essential read for today's practitioners, policy makers, healthcare analysts and providers, and all those concerned with the precarious state of America's under- and uninsured.
