A. Robert Lee - Gothic to Multicultural, Idioms of Imagining in American Literary Fiction (2008).jpg

Gothic to Multicultural: Idioms of Imagining in American Literary Fiction, twenty-three essays each carefully revised from the past four decades, explores both range and individual register. The collection opens with considerations of gothic as light and dark in Charles Brockden Brown, war and peace in Cooper’s The Spy, Antarctica as world-genesis in Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, the link of “The Custom House” and main text in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, reflexive codings in Melville’s Moby-Dick and The Confidence-Man, Henry James’ Hawthorne as self-mirroring biography, and Stephen Crane’s working of his Civil War episode in The Red Badge of Courage. Two composite lineages address apocalypse in African American fiction and landscape in women’s authorship from Sarah Orne Jewett to Leslie Marmon Silko. There follow culture and anarchy in Henry James’ The Princess Casamassima, text-into-film in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence, modernist stylings in Fitzgerald, Faulkner and Hemingway, and roman noir in Cornell Woolrich. The collection then turns to the limitations of protest categorization for Richard Wright and Chester Himes, autofiction in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, and the novel of ideas in Robert Penn Warren’s late fiction. Three closing essays take up multicultural genealogy, Harlem, then the Black South, in African American fiction, and the reclamation of voice in Native American fiction. A. Robert Lee is Professor of American Literature at Nihon University, Tokyo, having previously taught at the University of Kent, UK. His publications include Designs of Blackness: Mappings in the Literature and Culture of Afro-America (1998), Multicultural American Fiction: Comparative Black, Native, Latino/a and Asian American Fictions (2003), which won the American Book Award for 2004, Japan Textures: Sight and Word, with Mark Gresham (2007), and United States: Re-viewing Multicultural American Literature (2008).

James Powell - A History of the Canadian Dollar (2 005).jpg

The history of Canada's money provides a unique perspective from which to view the growth and development of the Canadian economy and Canada as a nation. Author James Powell traces the evolution of Canadian money form its pre-colonial origins to the present day, highlighting the currency chaos of the colonial period, as well as the effects of two world wars and the Great Depression.

He also chronicles the ups and downs of our dollar through almost 150 years and describes its relationship with its U.S. counterpart.

L. H. Roper - The English Empire in America, 1602– 1658, Beyond Jamestown (2009).jpg

This study situates the colonization of Virginia, the centrepiece of early English overseas settlement activity, in the social and political landscape of the early seventeenth century. Roper explores how the early development of the colony was viewed from both sides of the Atlantic, using the documentary record of key figures in the Virginia Company, as well as the colonisers themselves. He paints a vivid picture of a political culture characterized by patronage, the pursuit of personal agendas and fierce grappling for factional advantage, as 'Old World' political behaviour was successfully transplanted to the colony. At the same time however, he shows how local concerns and identity competed with the Stuart monarchy's attempts to centralize state affairs on the other side of the Atlantic. Roper rejects the prevailing view of the early colonisers, the Virginia Company and Crown ministers as bumbling incompetents whose mismanagement nearly caused the failure of the Jamestown project. Rather, he argues, they had a clear sense of purpose for the colony, and successfully adapted and crafted inherited political systems to a very new situation.

Derrick Darby - Rights, Race, and Recognition (200 9).jpg

What is the source of rights? Rights have been grounded in divine agency, human nature, and morally justified claims, and have been used to assess the moral status of legal and customary social practices. The orthodoxy is that some of our rights are a species of unrecognized or natural rights. For example, black slaves in antebellum America were said to have such rights, and this was taken to provide a basis for establishing the immorality of slavery. Derrick Darby exposes the main shortcomings of the orthodox conception of the source of rights and proposes a radical alternative. He draws on the legacy of race and racism in the USA to argue that all rights are products of social recognition. This bold, lucid and meticulously argued book will inspire readers to rethink the central role assigned to rights in moral, political, and legal theory as well as in everyday evaluative discourse.

Brian D. Schoen - The Fragile Fabric of Union, Cot ton, Federal Politics, and the Global Origins of t he Civil War (2009).jpg

01 - USA - Brian D. Schoen - The Fragile Fabric of Union, Cotton,...Politics, and the Global Origins of the Civil War 2009.jpg

In this fresh study Brian Schoen views the Deep South and its cotton industry from a global perspective, revisiting old assumptions and providing new insights into the region, the political history of the United States, and the causes of the Civil War.
Schoen takes a unique and broad approach. Rather than seeing the Deep South and its planters as isolated from larger intellectual, economic, and political developments, he places the region firmly within them. In doing so, he demonstrates that the region's prominence within the modern world -- and not its opposition to it -- indelibly shaped Southern history.

Wilfred E. Binkley - The Man in the White House, H is Powers and Duties (2009).jpg

The Constitution of the United States says little about the president's specific duties other than the enforcement of the laws of the land. Combining brilliant scholarship with a lively style, this book reveals how deep-seated forces, inherent in American society and affecting the presidency for over two centuries, have transformed the office created by the framers of the Constitution into the complex, powerful, and responsible institution it is today.
The administrations of the "strong" presidents have added to the powers and duties of the office as we know them. In addition, such social and political forces as the growth of political parties, economic and geographic expansion, and the changing nature of the national government have all had their influence on the presidency. These processes are historically traced by the author and illustrated by vivid examples of how they worked in the case of such holders of the office as Washington, Jackson, Polk, Lincoln, the two Roosevelts, and Eisenhower.

Peter Nowak - Sex, Bombs and Burgers, How War, Por n and Fast Food Shaped Technology As We Know It (2 010).jpg

War, porn and fast food - these are three of the most maligned facets of our civilization, and rightly so - war is responsible for untold human suffering and death; porn is often deemed responsible for everything from marital infidelity to the erosion of society's morals; and fast food, meanwhile, is frequently blamed for rising obesity levels, not to mention the increasing uniformity and blandness of western culture. So why celebrate them? Well, according to Peter Nowak, if it wasn't for war, porn and fast food, we might all still be living in caves.

Sex, Bombs and Burgers is a pacy, accessible history of technology based on fascinating research into the histories of all three industries and including extensive interviews with inventors, experts, academics, executives and commentators. It is also a chronicle of popular culture, chock-full of surprising 'fancy that?' moments. From cars to high-definition televisions, from website logins to microwave popcorn and slinkies, it reveals how our everyday lives have been shaped - hopefully for the most part indirectly - by war, porn and fast food.

Legends of the Wild West - Ronald A. Reis - Sittin g Bull (2010).jpg

Born in South Dakota in 1831, Sitting Bull was given his father's name after killing his first buffalo as a teenager. Sitting Bull witnessed the downfall of his people's way of life after the California gold rush of 1849 and the opening up of the West by the railroad. After he was wounded in battle, his views hardened about the presence of whites in Sioux land. He began to assume an uncompromising militancy that would characterize the rest of his life. Developing into one of the most important chiefs, Sitting Bull was able to unite a multitude of Sioux bands and other tribes at his camp, which continually expanded as the tribes sought safety in numbers. It was this camp that General George Armstrong Custer found on June 25, 1876, when he led the 7th Cavalry advance party to the Little Big Horn River. Sitting Bull, who had seen a vision of this attack during a tribal dance, and his people were able to defeat Custer and his men, but their victory was short-lived as thousands more outraged soldiers pursued the Sioux, forcing their surrender. This brave warrior was finally brought down in 1890 by tribal police who had been sent to arrest him. In Sitting Bull, read about a man who refused to back down from his convictions, even when they brought him face to face with the United States Calvary.

Squadron - Aircraft 95 - Al Adcock - AH-64 Apache in Action (1989).jpg

The AH-64 Apache is the latest in a long line of armed rotary wing aircraft that dates back to the Second World War when the Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 was armed with a 7.7MM MG 15 machine gun. Early helicopters were envisioned for use in the search and rescue role where they were likely to encounter the enemy and armament was included for self defense. It wasn't until the Korean War (1950-1953) that serious consideration was given to using the helicopter as an offensive platform armed with guns and rockets.
The Bell H-13 was the first American helicopter to be armed with machine guns for self defense. Later, Sikorsky H-34s and Piasecki H-2 Is were armed with rockets as well as guns and this practice led to the beginnings of the true armed attack helicopter. During 1954, the U.S. Army, based on its experience in the Korean War. saw the need for a dedicated armed helicopter that could escort troop-carrying helicopters and could suppress enemy ground fire. The armed helicopter would also have the capability to go deep into enemy territory, perform its rescue mission and return. With these missions in mind the Army developed several armed helicopters including the UH-1 Huey gunship and AH-1 Huey Cobra.

Squadron - Aircraft 146 - Lennart Lundh - H-34 Cho ctaw in Action (1994).jpg

In 1952. practical military helicopters were barely a decade old; however, the strides made in that time had been phenomenal. The limited-range, small-payload aircraft introduced in wartime Huropc and America had given way to such types as the Sikorsky H-19 and Piasecki H-21. The former, first flown on 10 November 1949. was proving to be a capable pcrf»>rmcr in the war on the Korean peninsula. The latter, just entering production, was in great demand from the Air Force and Army. Moving troops or hauling cargo, earning ihii rescues or protecting the Fleet, the helicopter's potential was unlimited.
The H04S-I. as the Navy designated the H-19. was in use with the Meet as an anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The first American production ASW helicopter, its success in creating doctrine and tactics also highlighted its shortcomings. Requirements lor greater power and longer range caused the Navy to begin searching for the H04S-1 \ successor only a year after its introduction. Bell and Sikorsky both entered the competition for the new design. Bell's entry was the HSL-I. a tandem rotor design with the cockpit in the nose, a centrally located cabin, and an aft mounted engine. Their only twin-rotor aircraft, its resemblance to Piasecki's H-21 reflected a branch of design which has carried on through to the M-46 and H-47. It was the first helicopter designed from the start for ASW work, but it possessed serious faults. Its size made it awkward for shipboard use and excessive cabin noise levels interfered with sonar operation. Contract cancellations, including all Royal Navy orders, resulted in only three prototypes and 50 production aircraft being built between 1953 and 1956. Most were mothballed upon delivery. Six were modified at NATC Patuxent River. Maryland for use in mine countermeasure experiments. These served with the Naval Air Mine Defense Development Unit at Panama City into the 1960s.

Concord - Armor at War 7032 - Steven J. Zaloga - U S Amtracs and Amphibians at War 1941-1945 (1999).jpg

Amphibious assault is one of the most difficult challenges in modern warfare. The defender has a natural advantage since the sea poses a formidable natural barrier to most military operations. With the advent of powerful coastal guns and steel-reinforced concrete fortifications, amphibious assault became all the more difficult. But amphibious assault also has it advantages. Coastlines are often long, and it is impossible to defend all locations. If a weak spot can be found, forces can be landed in relative safety. Until World War II, amphibious landings were conducted by improvised means, usually using ship's boats. In World War I, with major amphibious assaults such as Gallipoli. attempts began to develop specialized craft bener suited to amphibious landings, based on river barges. Further experimentation in the 1930s led to a whole range of practical craft from the small LCVP to the large LST. Although these naval craft were essential to modern amphibious assaults, they had one problem. They could only Transport the troops to the water's edge, at which point they could go no further. So there was some interest in amphibian craft, that is, craft that cuuld not only swim ashore, but once reaching the beach, could move on land.

U.S. armored units took part in all the major campaigns in the battles for France U.S. tank operations in France involved two types of formations. The armored divisions were intended primarily for mobile operations, and their principal role was to exploit deep behind enemy lines once a penetration had been won by the infantry. Of the sixteen armored divisions raised in WWII, all but one served in the European Theater of Operations. The separate tank battalions were formed to provide support to the infantry. In France, most infantry divisions had a tank battalion and a tank destroyer temporarily attached to them for the conduct of specific operations.....

Pamela C. Corley - Concurring Opinion Writing on t he U.S. Supreme Court (2010).jpg

When justices write or join a concurring opinion, they demonstrate their preferences over substantive legal rules. Concurrences provide a way for justices to express their views about the law, to engage in a dialogue of law with each other, the legal community, the public, and Congress. This important study is the first systematic examination of the content of Supreme Court concurrences. While previous work on Supreme Court decision making focuses solely on the outcome of cases, Pamela C. Corley tackles the content of Supreme Court concurring opinions to show the reasoning behind each justice's decision. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis, Concurring Opinion Writing on the U.S. Supreme Court offers a rich and detailed portrait of judicial decision making by studying the process of opinion writing and the formation of legal doctrine through the unique lens of concurrences.
