These essays chronicle the Spanish Empire's "enlightened" policies toward the Indians of the Americas in the late eighteenth century. In "Spaniards and Their Savages in the Age of Enlightenment," Weber begins by noting that Indians independently controlled most of the area that Spain claimed to own toward the end of the colonial era. Spaniards, acutely aware that they lived in the Age of Reason and not the Age of Conquest, came to accommodations with some of these "savages" or "wild Indians," whom they could neither defeat nor convert. In the second essay, "How did Spaniards Convert Indians? Missions in the Age of Reason," Weber focuses on the Spanish missionary enterprise. Weber demonstrates that Spain's idea of an ideal mission changed between the Habsburg and Bourbon eras and, more importantly, local circumstances and local people, including Indians, determined how a mission would measure up to the Crown's ideal.

Topics are easily located via a practical outline in volume one listing entries under categories such as "Agriculture," "Intellectual Trends and Developments," "International Situation," "New Deal," and "Women and Gender." Article length varies, with most being a page or slightly longer; FDR's entry is 10 times that. Large black-and-white archival photographs, several by Dorothea Lange, are judiciously placed throughout. More straightforward and drier than James Ciment's Encyclopedia of the Great Depression and the New Deal (Sharpe Reference, 2001), which features primary-source documents, and without as much intrinsic appeal as Depression America (Grolier, 2001), this is nonetheless a worthy resource.

Several entries discuss how the convention did or did not consider the interests of African Americans, Native Americans, and women. Average entry length is two pages, and each entry concludes with see also references and a further reading list. Article text is supplemented by nearly 40 sidebars on topics ranging from dueling to delegates' wives. An introduction offering a general history of the convention is followed by two chronologies: "Key Dates of the U.S. Founding and Its Background" and "Timetables of the Constitutional Convention." Important documents that predate the convention and "Materials from the Convention Debates and after the Convention" are collected in two separate appendixes. Also appended are charts showing the makeup of the convention committees and state-by-state lists of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.
