John Vile - The Constitutional Convention of 1787, A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of America's Foundin g ( 2 Volume Set) (2005).jpg

01 - USA - John Vile - The Constitutional Convention of 1787, A C...e Encyclopedia of Americas Founding 2 Volume Set 2005.jpg

Political science professor Vile has written or edited several other titles for ABC-CLIO, including Encyclopedia of Constitutional Amendments (1996). In this set, he seeks to provide comprehensive information about the Constitutional Convention for a wide range of readers, including scholars, students, and the general public.
More than 400 entries are alphabetically arranged. The entries cover people (Henry, Patrick; Locke, John); constitutional provisions (Commerce power; Jury, trial by; Suffrage); states and nations (Great Britain, Maryland); committees (Committee on Rules, Committee on Sumptuary Legislation); documents (Bill of Rights, Mayflower Compact); plans and forms of government (Hamilton plan, Monarchy); ideological influences (Puritanism, Scottish Enlightenment); and more. Several entries discuss how the convention did or did not consider the interests of African Americans, Native Americans, and women. Average entry length is two pages, and each entry concludes with see also references and a further reading list. Article text is supplemented by nearly 40 sidebars on topics ranging from dueling to delegates' wives. An introduction offering a general history of the convention is followed by two chronologies: "Key Dates of the U.S. Founding and Its Background" and "Timetables of the Constitutional Convention." Important documents that predate the convention and "Materials from the Convention Debates and after the Convention" are collected in two separate appendixes. Also appended are charts showing the makeup of the convention committees and state-by-state lists of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. These are followed by a quiz, "How Well Do You Know the U.S. Constitution?"; a 25-page bibliography; a list of cited cases; another, shorter bibliography for elementary- and -junior-high-school students and teachers; and a list of Web sites. Access is aided by an alphabetical list of entries, a list of sidebars, a topical table of contents, and a detailed general index. Black-and white illustrations, though few in number, add interest to the text.

In this biography, Dr. Mary Walker, Sharon M. Harris steers away from a simplistic view and showcases Walker as a Medal of Honor recipient, examining her work as an activist, author, and Civil War surgeon, along with the many nineteenth-century issues she championed: political, social, medical, and legal reforms, abolition, temperance, gender equality, U.S. imperialism, and the New Woman.

George W. Bush has surprised even his harshest critics with his leadership talents and discipline. Team Bush is the first book to explore these unique methods and tactics he has employed to become one of the nation's most popular commanders in chief in recent history.

Alfred Bendixen, James Nagel - A Companion to the American Short Story (2010).jpg

A Companion to the American Short Story traces the development of this versatile literary genre over the past two centuries. Written by leading critics in the field, and edited by two major scholars, it explores a wide range of writers, from Edgar Allen Poe and Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, and Charles Chesnutt at the end of the nineteenth century. In the twentieth the focus is on such important Modern writers as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Richard Wright before moving into the contemporary period with essays on Raymond Carver, Saul Bellow, and Denise Chávez. Contributions with a broader focus address groups of multiethnic, Asian, and Jewish writers. All the essays set the short story in context, focusing on the interaction of cultural forces and aesthetic principles.
The Companion takes account of cutting edge approaches to literary studies and contributes to the ongoing redefinition of the American canon, embracing genres such as ghost and detective fiction, cycles of interrelated short fiction, and comic, social and political stories. The volume also reflects the diverse communities that have adopted this literary form and made it their own, featuring entries on a variety of feminist and multicultural traditions. This volume presents an important new consideration of the role of the short story in the literary history of American literature.

Andrew Stark - Drawing the Line, Public and Privat e in America (2009).jpg

In Drawing the Line, Andrew Stark takes a fresh and provocative look at how Americans debate the border between the public realm and the private. The seemingly eternal struggle to establish the proper division of societal responsibilities to draw the line has been joined yet again. Obama administration initiatives, particularly bank bailouts and health care reform, roil anew the debate of just what government should do for its citizens, what exactly is the public sphere, and what should be left to individual responsibility.

Are these arguments specific to isolated policy issues, or do they reveal something bigger about politics and society? The author realizes that the shorthand, public vs. private dichotomy is overly simplistic. Something more subtle and complex is going on, Stark reveals, and he offers a deeper, more politically helpful way to view these conflicts.

Stark interviewed hundreds of policymakers and advocates, and here he weaves those insights into his own counterintuitive view and innovative approach to explain how citizens at the grassroots level divide policy debates between public and private responsibilities specifically on education, land use and public space, welfare, and health care. In doing so, Drawing the Line provides striking lessons for anyone trying to build new and effective policy coalitions on Main Street.

Victor Valle - City of Industry, Genealogies of Po wer in Southern California (2009).jpg

City of Industry is a stunning expos on the construction of corporate capitalist spaces. Investigating Industry's archives, including sealed FBI reports, Valle uncovered a series of scandals from the city's founder James M. Stafford to present day corporate heir Edward Roski Jr., the nation's biggest industrial developer. While exposing the corruption and corporate greed spawned from the growth of new technology and engineering, Valle reveals the plight of the property-owning servants, especially Latino working-class communities, who have fallen victim to the effects of this tale of corporate greed.

Anthony Pinn - Liberation Theologies in the United States, An Introductio (2010).jpg

In the nascent United States, religion often functioned as a justifier of oppression. Yet while religious discourse buttressed such oppressive activities as slavery and the destruction of native populations, oppressed communities have also made use of religion to critique and challenge this abuse. As Liberation Theologies in the United States demonstrates, this critical use of religion has often taken the form of liberation theologies, which use primarily Christian principles to address questions of social justice, including racism, poverty, and other types of oppression.
Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas and Anthony B. Pinn have brought together a stellar group of liberation theology scholars to provide a synthetic introduction to the historical development, context, theory, and goals of a range of U.S.-born liberation theologies. Chapters cover Black Theology, Womanist Theology, Latino/Hispanic Theology, Latina Theology, Asian American Theology, Asian American Feminist Theology, Native American Theology, Native Feminist Theology, Gay and Lesbian Theology, and Feminist Theology.
Contributors: Grace Ji-Sun Kim, Mary McClintock Fulkerson, Nancy Pineda-Madrid, Robert Shore-Goss, Andrea Smith, Andrew Sung Park, George (Tink) Tinker, and Benjamin Valentin.

Sarah H. Meacham - Every Home a Distillery, Alcoho l, Gender, and Technology in the Colonial Chesapea ke (2009).jpg

01 - USA - Sarah H. Meacham - Every Home a Distillery, Alcohol, G...Gender, and Technology in the Colonial Chesapeake 2009.jpg

In this original examination of alcohol production in early America, Sarah Hand Meacham uncovers the crucial role women played in cidering and distilling in the colonial Chesapeake. Her fascinating story is one defined by gender, class, technology, and changing patterns of production.
Alcohol was essential to colonial life; the region's water was foul, milk was generally unavailable, and tea and coffee were far too expensive for all but the very wealthy. Colonists used alcohol to drink, in cooking, as a cleaning agent, in beauty products, and as medicine. Meacham finds that the distillation and brewing of alcohol for these purposes traditionally fell to women. Advice and recipes in such guidebooks as The Accomplisht Ladys Delight demonstrate that women were the main producers of alcohol until the middle of the 18th century. Men, mostly small planters, then supplanted women, using new and cheaper technologies to make the region's cider, ale, and whiskey.
Meacham compares alcohol production in the Chesapeake with that in New England, the middle colonies, and Europe, finding the Chesapeake to be far more isolated than even the other American colonies. She explains how home brewers used new technologies, such as small alembic stills and inexpensive cider pressing machines, in their alcoholic enterprises. She links the importation of coffee and tea in America to the temperance movement, showing how the wealthy became concerned with alcohol consumption only after they found something less inebriating to drink.
Taking a few pages from contemporary guidebooks, Every Home a Distillery includes samples of historic recipes and instructions on how to make alcoholic beverages. American historians will find this study both enlightening and surprising.

William N. Thompson - Native American Issues (2005 ).jpg

This handbook attempts to add perspective and analysis to the sort of facts already found in several good reference works. In his lenghthy introduction, Thompson (public administration, Univ. of Missouri) discusses indigenous North Americans in the context of an explication of sovereignty and presents gambling's relationship to Native American economic development, an approach not taken in other Native American reference works. A useful chapter collects court cases, legislation, and statistics, and, as in most other works of this sort, an organization directory and annotated bibliography are included. The Points of View section is perhaps the most useful, excerpting the now poignant words of Native leaders in response to two centuries of majority action. This volume's weaknesses include a detailed but sloppily written and uneven chronology and a too-brief glossary that should have included pronunciation. Also, the biographical sketches include Native leaders throughout history but only list opposing European leaders prior to the 20th century. Ultimately, this book tries to do too much and fails. Too broad and not sufficiently deep, it is an imperfect match for the "Contemporary World Issues" series; many pieces do not treat current Native concerns, and in some cases considerable scholarship is needed to separate fact from opinion. Comprehensive collections could consider, but small and medium collections would be better served by the Native North American Almanac (Gale, 1994), a more clearly organized source for much of the ready-reference information covered here. David Vaught - After the Gold Rush, Tarnished Drea ms in the Sacramento Valley (2007).jpg

"It is a glorious country," exclaimed Stephen J. Field, the future U.S. Supreme Court justice, upon arriving in California in 1849. Field's pronouncement was more than just an expression of exuberance. For an electrifying moment, he and another 100,000 hopeful gold miners found themselves face-to-face with something commensurate to their capacity to dream. Most failed to hit pay dirt in gold. Thereafter, one illustrative group of them struggled to make a living in wheat, livestock, and fruit along Putah Creek in the lower Sacramento Valley. Like Field, they never forgot that first "glorious" moment in California when anything seemed possible.
n After the Gold Rush, David Vaught examines the hard-luck miners-turned-farmers -- the Pierces, Greenes, Montgomerys, Careys, and others -- who refused to admit a second failure, faced flood and drought, endured monumental disputes and confusion over land policy, and struggled to come to grips with the vagaries of local, national, and world markets.

Their dramatic story exposes the underside of the American dream and the haunting consequences of trying to strike it rich.

Rebecca M. Kluchin - Fit to Be Tied, Sterilization and Reproductive Rights in America, 1950-1980 (2 009).jpg

Fit to Be Tied provides a history of sterilization and what would become, at once, socially divisive and a popular form of birth control. Utilizing first-person narratives, court cases, and official records, Rebecca M. Kluchin examines the evolution of forced sterilization of poor women, especially women of color, in the second half of the century and contrasts it with demands for contraceptive sterilization made by white women and men. She chronicles public acceptance during an era of reproductive and sexual freedom, the shift away from sterilization and how it influenced many aspects of American life.
