This is a comprehensive, ambitious, and valuable work on an increasingly important subject. North Americans have studied Latin America since the mid-nineteenth century, when individuals without formal training undertook research on the region. By the early twentieth century, Latin America was recognized as a legitimate field for scholarship, and was incorporated into U.S. academic life through undergraduate and graduate courses on the region and foundation of professional journals and societies. The region initially interested historians and anthropologists, later joined by geographers and other specialists. The first part of the book describes the developments from 1850 to 1935, emphasizing the contributions of historians and anthropologists. The book then presents an account of trends in Latin American studies from 1935 to 1975. Although Latin American studies expanded during the 'Good Neighbor' era and World War II, interest in the region diminished in the 1950s as other regions seemed more relevant in the Cold War. By 1960, several factors, notably the Cuban Revolution, contributed to a revival of interest in Latin America, and the U.S. government and private groups, such as the Ford Foundation, devoted millions to research and teaching on the region. The number of Latin American programs and specialists at U.S. universities increased substantially. This work is the first to trace the evolution of Latin Americanist scholarship in the United States, examining developments in the social sciences as well as changing attitudes toward the region by U.S. scholars. It demonstrates that where Latin America was concerned, conditions within the United States usually dictated the nature and intensity of academic interest.

Conservation of avian species is high on the priority list of many birders. Authored by a former National Bird Conservation director for the National Audubon Society, Birder’s Conservation Handbook is a unique guide to 100 of the most at-risk North American species. Written at a level accessible to the layperson, the species accounts were reviewed by 50 experts from many institutions. Introductory essays on topics such as birds as environmental indicators and conservation issues affecting birds offer background material. The taxonomically arranged entries, several pages in length, follow a standard format. A black-and-white illustration of the bird and a range map appear at the beginning of each entry. An overview of the species is followed by “Status and Distribution,” “Ecology,” “Threats,” “Conservation Action,” “Conservation Needs,” and “References” for additional reading. The selection of the 100 most threatened species consists of widely distributed species, such as the American woodcock, ferruginous hawk, Kentucky warbler, and rusty blackbird, as well as lesser-known birds, such as the bristle-thighed curlew, buff-breasted sandpiper, island scrub jay, and red-legged kittiwake. The “Conservation Action” section in each entry is one of the highlights of the book. For example, we learn that habitat restoration is important for conservation of many species, including the Bell’s vireo, California gnatcatcher, and red-headed woodpecker; slowing global warming may benefit such birds as the Florida scrub jay, mottled duck, and whooping crane; and restricting the use of lead shot could limit the decline of the California condor. The entries are followed by several appendixes containing tables of “North American Birds of Conservation Concern Listed by Different Agencies and Organizations,” “Hawaiian Birds of Conservation Concern and Extinct Species,” and “Mexican Government Official List of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Bird Species” and a list of “Agencies and Organizations Involved in Bird Conservation.” A well-constructed subject index, using both common and scientific names, provides easy access to the contents. There is no other book specifically aimed at informing birders and researchers of threats to birds with suggestions of conservation actions to protect birds and their habitats. Highly recommended for public, academic, and special libraries.

This book is a biography of Alabama native John Forsyth Jr. and documents his career as a southern newspaper editor during the antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction periods. From 1837 to 1877 Forsyth wrote about many of the most important events of the 19th century. He used his various positions as an editor, Civil War field correspondent, and Reconstruction critic at the MobileRegister to advocate on behalf of both the South and the Democratic Party.
In addition, Forsyth played an active role in the events taking place around him through his political career, as United States Minister to Mexico, state legislator, Confederate Peace Commissioner to the Lincoln administration, staff officer to Braxton Bragg, and twice mayor of the city of Mobile.

In early 1942, the first of more than 18,000 U.S. military and civilian workers and countless tons of equipment were shipped across Canada and Alaska to one of the most inhospitable regions in the world. Their mission is to build a 1,500-mile-long highway through the Canadian and Alaskan wildernesses to link remote Fairbanks, Alaska, with the existing U.S. Highway System. Started three months after the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a good highway was needed to access America's northernmost territory should Alaska require extra defense in the event of a Japanese attack via the Aleutian Islands. In Naming the Antichrist, Fuller takes us on a fascinating journey through the dark side of the American religious psyche, from the earliest American colonists right up to contemporary fundamentalists such as Pat Robertson and Hal Lindsey.Fuller begins by offering a brief history of the idea of the Antichrist and its origins in the apocalyptic thought in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and traces the eventual migration of the Antichrist legend across the Atlantic. Military training was a prominent feature of higher education across the nineteenth-century South. Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel, as well as land-grant schools such as Texas A&M, Auburn, and Clemson, organized themselves on a military basis, requiring their male students to wear uniforms, join a corps of cadets, and subject themselves to constant military discipline. Several southern black colleges also adopted a military approach.
Challenging assumptions about a distinctive "southern military tradition," Rod Andrew demonstrates that southern military schools were less concerned with preparing young men for actual combat than with instilling in their students broader values of honor, patriotism, civic duty, and virtue. Southerners had a remarkable tendency to reconcile militarism with republicanism, Andrew says, and following the Civil War, the Lost Cause legend further strengthened the link in southerners' minds between military and civic virtue.
Though traditionally black colleges faced struggles that white schools did not, notes Andrew, they were motivated by the same conviction that powered white military schools--the belief that a good soldier was by definition a good citizen.
