Encyclopedia of Asian American Issues Today is the first major reference work focused on the full expanse of contemporary Asian American experiences in the United States. Drawing on over two decades of research, it takes an unprecedented look at the major issues confronting the Asian American community as a whole, and the specific ethnic identities within that community—from established groups such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Americans to newer groups such as Cambodian and Hmong Americans.

Across two volumes, Encyclopedia of Asian American Issues Today offers 110 entries on the current state of affairs, controversies, successes, and outlooks for future for Asian Americans. The set is divided into 11 thematic sections including diversity and demographics; education; health; identity; immigrants, refugees, and citizenship; law; media; politics; war; work and economy; youth, family, and the aged. Contributors include leading experts in the fields of Asian American studies, education, public health, political science, law, economics, and psychology.

Why did the world's strongest power intervene militarily in the tiny Commonwealth Caribbean island of Grenada in October 1983? This book focuses on United States-Grenada relations between 1979 and 1983 set against the wider historical context of US-Caribbean Basin relations. It presents an in-depth study of US policy during the Carter and Reagan presidencies and the deterioration of relations with the Marxist-Leninist People's Revolution Government (PRG) of Grenada. It considers in detail the murderous internal power struggle that destroyed the PRG and the decisionmaking process that resulted in a joint US-Caribbean military intervention.

Compiled by Burch, cofounder and board member of the Disability History Association and recipient of a Mellon Seminar Fellowship and Fulbright Lecturing Award, this work focuses on the importance of disability in American history, the need to explain disability in historical rather than medical terms, and the varieties and similarities of the historical experiences among those with disabilities. It thus succeeds in bringing to the forefront something that has typically gone unnoticed, allowing us to understand America in new ways by looking at it through a specific lens. The over 750 entries, contributed by over 350 authors nationwide, cover activists, disabled persons, authors, and inventors. Also covered are topics relating to disability in general, such as disorders, organizations, governmental institutes, acts and legal cases, publications, movements, sites of importance, events, major historical experiences, stereotypes, popular culture, autobiographical essays, and literature. The set includes an A-to-Z list of the entries; a separate list of documents included with the entries facilitates the quick location of primary resources. Each volume also includes an index of the work as a whole, enabling easy access to entries of interest. BOTTOM LINE Written at a reading level appropriate to the high school researcher, this work is equally valuable to the college student seeking to learn more about disabilities, American history, or persons who have been involved with disabilities in America

A valuable resource for students, teachers, and librarians, this updated edition by an award-winning author of more than 50 books presents a time line of Native North American life, history, and culture from around 25,000 BCE to 2006. Approximately 1,500 brief entries highlight significant events in 11 chapters, starting with "Before 1492" and ending with a new chapter, "2000 to the Present." The previous edition was published in 2001. Topics include origins and early migration patterns of Indians into North America; all major wars, battles, and conflicts; federal Indian policies; resettlement issues and life on reservations; Indian participation in the world wars, American film, and government; the Indian Rights movement and political organization; advances made in education; the legal status and health of Indian populations; and Native American art, religion, music, and literature. Black-and-white photos, a map, and sidebars with quotes by famous Indians and non-Indians add further interest. A glossary, a list of works discussed in the entries, a bibliography, and an index complete the work. Not intended as a stand-alone, this title would work best when used in conjunction with other resources like The Gale Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (1998) and Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes (Facts On File, 2006). It is recommended for academic and public libraries as well as special collections.

Lhasa apsos, terriers, and beagles, oh my! More than 160 American Kennel Club–recognized breeds in the areas of sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, nonsporting, herding, and “miscellaneous”—those not yet placed in an AKC group—are beautifully described here in a condensed version of Barron’s Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds (2d ed., 2005). Although the same breeds are included, this version leaves out some introductory and back-matter material and the sidebars, which provide a detailed black-and-white breed illustration. Full-page entries contain the breed name; brief descriptions of history, temperament, upkeep, and health concerns; a captioned color photo of the full body and close up of snout area; and highlighted data on the origin, function, coat, color, and height and weight of the breed. For example, the captioned color photo for the Finnish Spitz breed includes descriptions of its almond-shaped eyes; foxlike head and expression; small, high-set erect ears; plumed tail; and round feet. A sidebar rates eight personality and grooming traits from 1 to 5. For example, the Pekingese entry rates energy level, exercise requirements, playfulness, and ease of training at level 1 (low); affection and friendliness at level 2; and grooming at level 5 (high); and it recommends this breed for lap purposes only. The information provided is perfect for selecting the appropriate pooch based on personality, good looks (check out the Komondor and Puli—black and white “mops”), or grooming and health needs. Front and back matter include an overview of the breed entries with explanations of ratings, descriptions of the eight AKC groups, a glossary of medical conditions from achondroplasia to zinc responsive dermatosis, a glossary of breed color terms, and a listing of health resources. Entries are consistent in coverage and design, making it easy to compare breeds. This small, spiral-bound book is perfect for circulating or reference collections in school and public libraries.

-This compendium is a veritable treasure trove of information, divided into 19 chapters that cover such topics as "Diet and Health," "Religion," "The Cities," "Science and Technology," "Crime and Violence," and "Popular Life and Recreation." There are general details of Colonial life as well as obscure and difficult-to-find facts that students need and teachers always want. Copious tables, maps, and charts cover everything from small-town population statistics to the heights of Colonial soldiers. Readers will find lists of the pre-1763 Indian treaties, perpetual calendars, the price of wheat, rice exports, lists of Governors and Chief Justices, distribution of craft workers, wage rates, occupations of New York taxpayers, and a chronology from 2,000,000 B.C.E to A.D. 1763. The text is also sprinkled with black-and-white reproductions of period art and photographs of the Colonial areas as they appear today. Young adults will enjoy leafing through all of the fascinating facts and curious bits of information, but the well-organized, complete, and accessible text will also provide an invaluable resource for research and term papers.

Containing more than 400 entries ranging in length from 500 to 5,000 words, this encyclopedia covers a wide range of topics: media associations and organizations, journalist biographies, laws and legislation, technological innovations, journalism history, and more. Arranged alphabetically, each entry includes a helpful bibliography. The diverse range of topics (Boxing journalism, Chinese American press, Obituaries, Weekly Reader, to name a few) makes it a particularly useful reference source. The work omits or provides little coverage on some important topics, for example, biographies of the prolific media critic Howard Kurtz and muckraking journalist I. F. Stone; the history of journalism education; and media watchdog organizations. There are only a few entries on the burgeoning Hispanic media, which serves the largest minority group in America. Since the huge topic of American journalism has been compressed into a single volume instead of a multivolume work, it is inevitable that many topics might be omitted. A few entries are marred by a lack of balance. In terms of book design, the work would have been enhanced with illustrations or black-and-white photographs. Despite these problems, this volume serves as a good reference source for both large public and academic libraries.

Provocative, divisive, and sometimes even threatening, First Amendment issues have been at the forefront of civic discourse since the founding of the nation. Today is no different, with the U.S. Supreme Court hearing a challenge to the Federal Communication Commission’s decision to penalize television networks for airing “fleeting expletives,” churches testing IRS regulations prohibiting political campaigning, and states considering legislation to regulate cyber bullying by classmates. Encyclopedia of the First Amendment is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn more about broadcast regulation, the establishment of religion clause, students’ rights, or a myriad of other topics involving the First Amendment and its political, cultural, and legal significance. The 1,400 topical entries that form the core of the work appear in traditional A–Z format and range from 250 to 1,500 words depending on the significance or complexity of the subject. All entries are signed, include cross-references, and cite at least one primary or secondary source. Relevant court decisions, laws, governmental entities, organizations, and people who have been integrally involved with the development and interpretation of the First Amendment are covered, along with critical legal concepts and methods of interpretation. Issues ranging from abortion protests to wiretapping are discussed. The rights of prisoners, students, members of the military, teachers, and reporters are covered, as are concepts such as Community standards and Prior restraint. The encyclopedia is packed with well-designed reader aids, including alphabetical and topical tables of contents, a case table of contents, a foreword by the founder of the First Amendment Center, a chronology that begins in 313 with Emperor Constantine’s extension of religious toleration to Christianity, and seven introductory essays. These essays provide an overview of each of the provisions of the amendment and discuss the application of the First Amendment to the states, the amendment’s influence worldwide, and its future. Along with the foreword, they help the reader appreciate the history, development, and importance of First Amendment freedoms and the ongoing challenges and threats to them. The work concludes with a list of online resources, a bibliography, and thorough case and subject indexes. Highly recommended for academic, public, and law libraries.

An exploration of technology and the logic of American racism. Sarah E. Chinn pulls together what seem to be opposite discourses - the information-driven languages of law and medicine and the subjective logics of racism - to examine a range of primary social case studies such as the American Red Cross's lamentable decision to segregate black blood during World War II and its ramifications for American culture, and more recent examples revealing the eugenicist roots of criminology such as the trial of O.J. Simpson. She also analyzes several key American literary texts such as Mark Twain's novel "Pudd'nhead Wilson", the plot of which turns issues of racial identity, and which was written at a time when scientific and popular interest in evidence of the body - not only in fingerprinting, but in phrenology and blood typing -was at a peak. Through her analysis of the history of science, US popular culture, sensationalized court cases, forensic technology and literary texts, the author reveals how in the United States issues of blood and skin have been manipulated to bear the evidence of racial identity during the 20th century.
