Dans le sud des États-Unis, deux prisonniers, le Noir Noah Cullen (Sidney Poitier) et le Blanc John Jackson (Tony Curtis), sont transportés par fourgon cellulaire vers leur nouveau lieu de détention. Le véhicule a un accident et les deux prisonniers en profitent pour s'évader.Pendant que le sheriff du comté (Theodore Bikel) organise la poursuite, Cullen et Jackson, malgré la haine raciste qu'ils ont l'un envers l'autre, n'ont pas d'autre choix que de coopérer s'ils veulent échapper à ceux qui les ont pris en chasse car ils sont incapables de briser la chaîne qui les lie. Ils tentent de voler de la nourriture dans un village mais ils sont surpris par les habitants qui cherchent à leur faire un mauvais parti. Par chance, l'un d'eux (Lon Chaney Jr.) leur donne le moyen de s'enfuir.Ils finissent par échouer dans une ferme où une femme (Cara Williams), abandonnée par son mari, y habite avec son fils (Kevin Coughlin). Elle leur donne le moyen de couper la chaîne. Elle et Jackson se lient d'amitié. Cependant, lorsque ce dernier apprend qu'elle a envoyé Cullen à une mort certaine en lui indiquant un chemin menant droit à un marais, il la quitte et court le prévenir. Incapables de rattraper un train en marche qui aurait pu leur faire quitter l'État, les deux évadés sont finalement repris par leurs poursuivants.

A beautiful secretary risks her life to try to find the elusive woman who may prove her boss didn't murder his selfish wife.Unhappily married Scott Henderson spends the evening on a no-name basis with a hat-wearing woman he picked up in a bar. Returning home, he finds his wife strangled and becomes the prime suspect in her murder. Every effort to establish his alibi fails; oddly no one seems to remember seeing the phantom lady (or her hat). In prison, Scott gives up hope but his faithful secretary, "Kansas," doggedly follows evanescent clues through shadowy nocturnal streets. Can she save Scott in time?

Après une dispute avec son épouse, Scott Henderson, séduisant ingénieur de 32 ans, quitte son domicile et, dans un bar, fait la connaissance d'une jeune femme. L'enquête menée par la police ne permet pas de retrouver cette inconnue d'un soir et deux témoins affirment avoir vu Scott seul.Carol, sa secrétaire, secrètement amoureuse de lui et Burgess, l'un des inspecteurs, tous les deux convaincus de son innocence, décident de mener leur propre enquête.Les deux témoins meurent dans des circonstances étranges, le premier, Mac le barman, est victime d'un accident de la route et le second, Cliff, le batteur, est lui aussi étranglé.Puis, le meilleur ami de Scott Henderson, le sculpteur Jack Marlowe, revient d'un voyage à l'étranger. Sans grande conviction, il se joint à Carol et Burgess afin de retrouver le coupable.

After a fight with his wife on their anniversary, Scott Henderson (Alan Curtis), a 32-year-old engineer, picks up an equally unhappy woman in a bar and they take a taxi to see a show. The woman refuses to tell him anything about herself. The star of the show, Estela Monteiro (Aurora Miranda), becomes furious when she notices that both she and the mystery woman are wearing the same unusual hat. When Henderson returns home, he finds Police Inspector Burgess (Thomas Gomez) and two of his men waiting to question him; his wife has been strangled with one of his neckties. Henderson has a solid alibi, but the bartender, taxi driver and Monteiro deny seeing the phantom lady. Henderson cannot even clearly describe the woman. He is tried and sentenced to death.Carol Richman (Ella Raines), a loyal secretary secretly in love with her boss, sets out to exonerate him. She starts with the bartender. She sits in the bar night after night, staring at and unnerving him. Finally, she follows him home one night. When he confronts her on the street, some bystanders step in to restrain him. He breaks free, runs into the street and is run over. Later, Burgess offers to help (unofficially); he has become convinced that only a fool or an innocent man would have stuck to such a weak alibi. Burgess provides her with information about the drummer at the show, Cliff (Elisha Cook, Jr.), who had tried to make eye contact with the mystery lady. Richman dresses gaudily and goes to the show. Rhythmic inter-cutting between Cliff's frantic drumming and the leering responses of Richman leads to them going back to his apartment.

Para aclarar el asunto, Candella y Collins intentarán localizar a la novia de Rome, Tina Riconti (Debra Paget).El ladrón de poca monta y asesino de policías, Martin Rome, está herido en el hospital de la prisión y sigue rechazando ayudar al rastrero abogado Niles a absolver a su cliente confesando un crimen. El teniente de policía Candella debe comprobar la alegación de Niles; amigo de la familia de Rome. Este camina en la cuerda floja entre el sentimentalismo y el cinismo. Martin teme que Candella implique también a su novia Teena y hará todo lo que esté en su mano para protegerla.Ni que decir tiene que las interpretaciones están en un grado superlativo y que son lo mejor de la película. Todo el reparto está increible destacando por encima de todo un maravilloso duelo interpretativo entre el gran Victor Mature y el enorme Richard Conte. A esta última característica de la produccíón ayuda mucho la profundización que se hace de todos y cada uno de los personajes. Pocas películas se han filmado en que aparezcan tantos y tan distintos personajes y todos ellos llevados hasta el límite y expuestos detalladamente al espectador. Con todos estos ingredientes sumados a un guión perfecto, un profundo mensaje moralista y familiar y la mano de uno de los mejores directores americanos del estilo noir, estamos ante otro clásico imprescindible del cine negro americano y que hoy en día sigue estando en la cima del mejor cine de accion y suspense.

Così il malavitoso è sempre vestito di bianco ed è un fidanzato devoto (il ruolo della sua ragazza fu interpretato dall'esordiente Debra Paget), mentre il poliziotto è un uomo privo di scrupoli ed invidioso del successo con le donne del suo ex-amico.

The opening scene of Robert Siodmak's grim film noir depicts police lieutenants Candella (Victor Mature) and Collins (Fred Clark) observing wounded cop killer Martin Rome (Richard Conte) receive last rites. Though Rome recovers, he still must elude Candella and Collins in his desperate attempt to escape his fate. Rome has two visitors in the hospital: his girlfriend, Teena (Debra Paget), who goes into hiding, and Niles (Berry Kroeger), a crooked lawyer. Niles tries to bribe Rome to take a jewel theft and homicide rap for a client of his since Rome is facing the electric chair anyway. When Rome refuses, Niles threatens to frame Teena as the client's female accomplice. Worried that Candella might find Teena, Rome breaks out of jail and goes to Niles' office to accept the offer, but he actually plans to leave the country with Teena. When Niles reneges, Rome kills him, but not before learning the accomplice's identity and discovering the stolen jewels in the lawyer's safe. Rome finds the accomplice, Rose Given (Hope Emerson), and offers to trade the jewelry for the means to leave the country. She agrees, and they arrange a meeting in the subway, but Rome informs Candella of the plan. When the police arrive, Candella is shot, Rose is arrested, and Rome escapes to meet up with Teena in a church. As he is trying to convince Teena to run away with him, a wounded Candella shows up and tells Teena how Rome uses people and that everyone who helped in his escape will be paying a price.Teena rejects Rome, and he runs again, only to be shot down by Candella. The moral order is ultimately restored, but no one has been left unscarred.
