On November 24, 1943, a Japanese torpedo plunged into the starboard side of the American escort carrier USS Liscome Bay. The torpedo struck the thin-skinned carrier in the worst possible place - the bomb storage area. The resulting explosion could be seen 16 miles away, literally ripping the Liscome Bay in half and killing 644 of her crew. In terms of lives lost, it was the costliest carrier sinking in United States naval history. Liscome Bay's loss came on her first combat operation: the American invasion of the Gilbert Islands. Despite her short career, she touched a number of remarkable and famous lives. Doris Miller, the first black American sailor to win the Navy Cross, lost his life, as did Rear Admiral Henry Mullinax, one of the Navy's first "air admirals." John Crommelin was the senior officer to survive the sinking. Later in his career, Crommelin, a decorated naval aviator himself, sparked the famous Revolt of the Admirals, which helped save the role of naval aviation in America's Cold War military. James Noles's account of the Liscome Bay and those who served aboard her is based on interviews with the ship's survivors and an unpublished memoir that the ship's pay officer made available to the author. This readable, compelling book pays homage to the crew by telling their story of experience and sacrifice.

Thomas J. Pluckhahn - Kolomoki, Settlement, Ceremo ny, and Status in the Deep South, A.D. 350 to 750 (2003).jpg

Kolomoki - one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the southeastern United States - includes at least nine large earthen mounds in the lower Chattahoochee River valley of southwest Georgia. The largest, Mound A, rises approximately 20 meters above the terrace that borders it. From its flat-topped summit, a visitor can survey the string of smaller mounds that form an arc to the south and west. Archaeological research had previously placed Kolomoki within the Mississippian period (ca. A.D. 1000-1500) primarily because of the size and form of the mounds. But this book presents data for the main period of occupation and mound construction that confirm an earlier date, in the Woodland period (ca. A.D. 350-750). Even though the long-standing confusion over Kolomoki's dating has now been settled, questions remain regarding the lifeways of its inhabitants. Thomas Pluckhahn's research has recovered evidence concerning the level of site occupation and the house styles and daily lives of its dwellers. He presents here a new, revised history of Kolomoki from its founding to its eventual abandonment, with particular attention to the economy and ceremony at the settlement. This study makes an important contribution to the understanding of "middle range" societies, particularly the manner in which ceremony could both level and accentuate status differentiation within them. It provides a readable overview of one of the most important - but historically least understood - prehistoric Native American sites in the United States.

Viola Goode Liddell - Grass Widow, Making My Way i n Depression Alabama (2004).jpg

Viola Goode Liddell's short memoir tells the story of her return to Alabama in search of a husband and a new life. Thirty years old and recently divorced, Liddell comes back to her home state - with her young son - determined to survive, during the depths of the Depression. Liddell narrates the obstacles she faces as a single mother in the 1930s Deep South with self-deprecating humor and a confessional tone that reveal both her intelligence and her unapologetic ambitions. Unable to earn, borrow, or beg enough money to support herself and her child, Liddell uses her family connections to secure a teaching position in Camden, Alabama. Even though an older sister's status within the community helps her land the job, Liddell is warned that she must be very careful as she navigates the tricky social terrain of small town life, particularly when it comes to men. A commentary on the plight of women of the time is woven into the narrative as Liddell recounts her experience of being refused a loan at the local bank by her own brother-in-law. Despite all the restrictions on her behavior and the crushing reality that she has become "the biggest nuisance in the family" because of her past, Liddell cheerfully and successfully builds a new life of respectability and hope.

Jeff Smith - The Presidents We Imagine (2009).jpg

In such popular television series as The West Wing and 24, in thrillers like Tom Clancy's novels, and in recent films, plays, graphic novels, and internet cartoons, America has been led by an amazing variety of chief executives. Some of these are real presidents who have been fictionally reimagined. Others are "might-have-beens" like Philip Roth's President Charles Lindbergh. Many more have never existed except in some storyteller's mind.

In June, 1967, jet aircraft and motor torpedo boats of Israel brutally assaulted an American naval vessel, the USS Liberty, in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. Thirty-four men died and 172 were wounded. The author was an officer on the bridge when the attack started and subsequently spent many years researching and documenting this meticulous account of the attack and the cover-up that followed.

Matthew Joseph Bruccoli - American Decades 1900-19 09 (1996).jpeg

This is the latest installment of the Gale series documenting the history and social trends of this country during the 20th century. This volume covers the decade when America emerged as a world power, saw its population shift from the farm to the city, watched government challenge big business for the first time, and did little as African Americans continued to lose political and civil rights. Following the format established in previous volumes, the 13 chapters cover history, politics, law, economics, culture, and sports. Each chapter opens with a chronology, followed by a brief essay highlighting the decade's significant events. The main section offers essays on selected people and topics, and the chapter closes with a collection of biographies and a bibliography of period writings. Accenting the text are period photographs, drawings, and other art works. Coverage of each topic is balanced in terms of both the elite and common people and the high arts and everyday affairs. No new additional information appears in this work. Rather, the accessible tone, good index, nice arrangement, and wide coverage makes this a useful reference book or introduction for patrons unfamiliar with this fascinating period. Recommended for school, public, and undergraduate libraries.?Stephen L. Hupp, Univ. of Pittsburgh, Johnstown.

Margaret Lamberts Bendroth - Fundamentalists in th e City, Conflict and Division in Boston's Churches , 1885-1950 (2005).jpg

01 - USA - Margaret Lamberts Bendroth - Fundamentalists in the Ci...flict and Division in Bostons Churches, 1885-1950 2005.jpg

Fundamentalists in the City is a story of religious controversy and division, set within turn of the century and early twentieth-century Boston. It offers a new perspective on the rise of fundamentalism, emphasizing the role of local events, both sacred and secular, in deepening the divide between liberal and conservative Protestants. The first part of the narrative, beginning with the arrest of three clergymen for preaching on the Boston Common in 1885, shows the importance of anti-Catholicism as a catalyst for change. The second part of the book deals with separation, told through the events of three city-wide revivals, each demonstrating a stage of conservative Protestant detachment from their urban origins.
