Eichengreen (Univ. of California-Berkeley), the author of Golden Fetters: The Gold Standard and the Great Depression, 1918-1939 (Oxford Univ., 1992), uses a detailed history of exchange rate systems to support his theory that the democratization of political processes has presented competing goals to policymakers, making it more difficult for them to commit to fixed rates of exchange. His explanation for the movement toward floating exchange rates is controversial but well argued. The information he cites is current, and he incorporates a discussion of the European Monetary System and its future. Eichengreen's presentation of history is solid, with ample references. General readers will benefit from the glossary of his technical terms. His book will be the most useful to economists, historians, political scientists, and finance professionals.

The M2/M3 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle was developed to replace the M113. With increased firepower compared to its predecessor, the Bradley is also superior in mobility and armor protection. It has a two-man stabilized turret as a platform for a 25mm Bushmaster chin gun, a M240 co-axial MG, and a two-tube TOW launcher with a seven-man dismount team.

The M2A2/M3A2 Bradley went into service with the 3d INF and 1st INF in 1989/90. It played a major role in the ground war for the liberation of Kuwait during Operation "Desert Storm" in 1991. During the Gulf War, the Bradley fleet proved to be very reliable. Only 3 vehicles were destroyed by enemy fire, with 17 vehicles by friendly fire. As a result of "Desert Storm", an improvement program for the Bradley begun. These modified vehicles received the code M2A2 ODS/M3A2 ODS.

The authors Walter Bohm and Peter Siebert are regular contributors to Concord's range of modern armor books. Most photos were taken in Germany, where the Bradleys roam through the countryside as will. There are also photos of Bradleys serving in Kosovo. A section is devoted to Bradley variants and special markings.

Much has been written about the Coalition invasion of Iraq in 2003, but there has been much less written about the United States Marine Corps' role specifically. The USA has been embroiled in the ongoing insurgency in Iraq since Operation Iraqi Freedom kicked off on 23 March 2003. "Marines on the Ground: Operation Iraqi Freedom 1" covered the important role played by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in the initial invasion. The second volume in this two-part series has now been released, and it carries on the story of I MEF's return to Iraq in March 2004 through to the end of March 2005 when responsibility was handed over to II MEF.

As in the earlier volume, this book utilizes official photos taken by USMC photographers. This ensures a wide variety of photos covering different locations, units and vehicles are included. Operation Al Fajr, the violent Battle of Fallujah, is extremely well covered in a detailed chapter that offers a day-by-day action of the fighting. Understanding of this operation is boosted by a personal battle account from Andreas Elesky , MSgt USMC (Ret.), who participated in the fighting before being wounded in action. Other chapters cover such events as the Najaf Crisis and Iraq's first free national elections. Vehicles much in evidence in this photographic record include Humvees, MTVRs, LAVs, AAVs, and M1A1 Abrams tanks.

The book contains four color plates by Hubert Cance, two profile line drawings, along with one 1/35 scale plans. This is a concise record of major actions that U.S. Marines were involved in during this period, and readers wanting to learn more about the Battle of Falljah, or simply looking for a collection of Marine photos, will find much of interest here.

There are disturbing trends in the continued under-representation of African American women in higher education, especially their attainment of post-baccalaureate and graduate degrees. This is an issue of major concern nationally, for the Black community, and for leaders in higher education.
The fifteen scholars who contribute to this volume trace the trajectory of Black women in education, with a particular focus on higher education. These scholars combine research and personal narratives to explore educational issues ranging from historical accounts of Black female teachers in the nineteenth century, to the challenges and triumphs of being an activist researcher at the turn of the twenty-first century. The essays in this volume address specific historical, social, cultural, political, and academic issues that affect Black women in the academy, and provide readers with tangible examples of how these scholars have transcended some of the challenges in their pursuit of academic excellence.
While these essays do not claim to provide the "magic solution" or a "how-to-guide" to success in higher education, they do raise thought-provoking issues that are critical to the success of Black women in higher education.
This book uncovers issues, and proposes remedies, which will be of vital interest for anyone concerned with diversity and equity in higher education. Born in a log cabin in Tennessee in June 1854, Nat Love was the slave of Robert Love. He was about six when the Civil War began, and after the slaves were freed following the war, Love was ready to start living a new life out West, where he could find work as a cowhand. It wasn't long before he started showing his talents as a cowboy, roping and herding cattle and learning to shoot a Colt .45. He used his skill in roping contests at rodeos, where he earned the nickname "Deadwood Dick" and was proclaimed "Champion Roper of the Western Cattle Country." Eventually Love walked away from the life of a cowboy and worked as a Pullman porter, becoming one of the most popular. Though some may be more fiction than fact, the vivid accounts in his autobiography tell tales of adventures with such characters as Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill, Kit Carson, and the James Brothers. In this new offering, readers can discover the truth and tall tales Nat Love spun in his self-penned work.
