California's earliest European colonists--Russian merchants and Spanish missionaries--depended heavily on Native Americans for labor to build and maintain their colonies, but they did so in very different ways. This richly detailed book brings together disparate skeins of the past--including little-known oral histories, native texts, ethnohistory, and archaeological excavations--to present a vivid new view of how native cultures fared under these two colonial systems. Jones was a prolific writer; in fact, his own accounts of his golf matches occasionally appeared in the next day's paper. Rapoport says he "discovered a disparity between the man and the myth that was not always so simple." He recounts that despite his gentlemanly image, Jones could hold a fearsome grudge, as he did against fellow pro Chick Evans, whose every attempt at reconciliation was rebuffed. As for 1930, Rapoport brings much of the detail of the Grand Slam quest back to life. This encyclopedia focuses on American popular culture, examining the post- World War II era in over 2700 alphabetical essays in the following broad categories: film, music, print culture, social life, sports, television and radio, and art and performance. It contains both descriptive essays (75-150 words) and more in-depth essays (up to 3000 words), each signed and concluding with a secondary bibliography. Volume 5 ends with a variety of indexes: a general index, a "Time-Frame Index" (by decades), and a category index. Unfortunately, however, the general index lists the essays in which a topic, person, or event is discussed but not the major essay about the subject. To discover if there is an actual essay about a specific topic, one must go to the correct alphabetical portion of the encyclopedia or consult the "List of Entries" at the front of the volume. This would not normally be a problem, but unfortunately there are very few cross references in the text--and none at all in the index. For example, to find the American Association of Retired Persons, one needs to know to look under AARP; there is no cross reference from the full name to the acronym in either the encyclopedia or the general index. The general index only points the reader to an essay mentioning the American Association of Retired Persons, not to the essay specifically about AARP. In addition, there are no See Also references (except for one that should really have been a See reference).

Social movements take shape in relation to the kind of state they face, while over time states are transformed by the movements that they both incorporate and resist. Green States and Social Movements is a comparative study of the environmental movement's successes and failures in four very different states: the USA, UK, Germany and Norway. The history covers the entire sweep of the modern environmental era that begins in 1970. The end in view is a green transformation of the state and society on a par with earlier transformations that gave us first the liberal capitalist state and then the welfare state. The authors explain why such a transformation is now most likely in Germany, and why it is least likely in the United States, which has lost the status of environmental pioneer that it gained in the early 1970s. Their comparative analysis also explains the role played by social movements in making modern societies more deeply democratic, and yields insights into the strategic choices of environmental movements as they decide on what terms to engage, enter or resist the state. Sometimes it makes sense for a movement to act conventionally, as a green party or set of interest groups. But sometimes inclusion can mean co-optation, in which case a movement can instead emphasize action in and through civil society.

In February, 1950, a double barbed-wire complex was set up within Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico, to headquarter a new Top Secret U.S. Air Force unit designated the 4925th Test Group (Atomic). A small sign at the gate simply said "Santa Fe Operations". Unauthorized, curious visitors were politely but firmly turned away by armed USAF Air Policemen. The best bomber and fighter pilots in the USAF and all types of expert support personnel were located worldwide and orders were promptly cut transferring them to the elite 4925th.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer has been in service with the US. Navy since 1991, with construction divided between Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (formerly Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding) in Pascagoula, Miss., and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Maine. The first 21 ships in the class -DDG 51 through DDG 71 - are categorized as Flight I, the next seven - DDG 72 through DDG 78 - as Flight II, and those from DDG 79 on as Flight IIA. The USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) was to have concluded a build of 62 Arleigh Burke destroyers. However, following cancellation of the DDG 1000 program after the completion of only two vessels, the Navy plans to continue Arleigh Burke construction at least through USS Chandler (DDG 116). Flight IIA improvements over previous flights include hangars for two SH-60B/F LAMPS III (Light Airborne Multipurpose System) Seahawk helicopters, new combat systems software, an enlarged flight deck, the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, the Kingfisher mine detection sonar, a Kollmorgen optronic sight, and an upgraded Aegis 7.1R combat system.
