Using interviews, diaries and published sources, Mr. Fairchild, a psychology professor at Texas A & M University, Canyon, Texas, explores a rarely discussed subject - the suffocating and omnipresent loneliness of the Panhandle frontier.

Diet, infant mortality, burial procedures and etiquette, mourning, and the importance of friendship and neighborliness are all covered by these sobering and sometimes heartrending personal accounts. Also discussed is the way men dealt with these problems and benefits, which predictably, was quite different from women.

Instead of romanticizing the pioneers - the facts revealed in their writings make them more human and
allow for an easy connection with the reader. The details of everyday pioneer life are valuable and the passages gleaned from letters and diaries are well chosen.

Thankfully, the second part of the book is a little lighter than the first and covers the camp or brush arbor meetings. Here the reader is relieved to find that there was some fun to be had when families would bring their children, dogs and most of their furniture to these semi-annual events. Getting a year or six months worth of friendship and/ or religion crowded into a few short days is something few societies experience.

It's a readable book on a serious subject without a droning academic tone.

Louis Fairchild is a professor of psychology at West Texas A&M University. A graduate of Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he holds a Ph.D. from the University of Houston.

Maxine Eichner - The Supportive State, Families, G overnment, and America's Political Ideals (2010).jpg

Broad agreement exists among politicians and policymakers that the family is a critical institution of American life. Yet the role that the state should play with respect to family ties among citizens remains deeply contested. This controversy over the state's role undergirds a broad range of public policy debates: Does the state have a responsibility to help resolve conflicts between work and family? Should same-sex marriage be permitted? Should parents who receive welfare benefits be required to work? Yet while these individual policy issues are endlessly debated, the underlying theoretical question of the stance that the state should take with families remains largely unexplored.

Jean-Paul Brodeur - The Policing Web (2010).jpg

Nearly all research devoted to policing focuses on public uniformed police and their legal use of force. An overwhelming amount of this work draws on evidence from Anglo-American police forces. These twin emphases have led to a limited view. Agencies such as criminal investigation units, intelligence services, private security companies, and military policing organizations have almost entirely escaped scholarly attention.

Tom Price & Susan Crites Price - Frommer's Irrever ent Guide to Washington, D.C. (2004).jpg

Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.

Anne Zeman, Kate Kelly - Everything You Need To Kn ow About American History Homework (1997).jpg

Grade 4-6-As their titles indicate, these books are written specifically to help children complete their homework assignments. Therefore, they are best used as circulating materials and not as reference books. None of the material is presented in-depth and the books aren't meant to be used for reports, but in terms of answering specific questions, introducing concepts, or providing simple explanations they are competently done. All three volumes have thorough tables of contents that are easy to use; large print size and lots of white space; numerous charts, maps, and graphs; and color-coded sound bites of information. Each page has a handy sidebar that indicates what can be found and thus provides a shortcut for someone leafing through in search of an answer. The indexes are also complete. American History is enriched with colorful graphics and archival photos. Answers to the most commonly asked homework questions abound, and they are easily accessible and clearly stated.

Eckhard Fiedler, Mil Norman-Risch, Reimer Jansen - America in close-up (1990).jpg

"America in Close-Up" is a study of contemporary America which looks at a variety of aspects of life in the United States. Each unit of the book has three parts; Part A offers a clear and detailed account of some aspect of American society and in Part B the subject is explored further through interviews, articles and photographs taken from contemporary newspapers and journals such as "Time" and "Newsweek", which give an insight into the way Americans see themselves and show the contrasting views held by people in the different strata of society. The factual information in Part A provides the historical and cultural context for students to understand the issues discussed in the texts in Part B which range from immigration and race relations to the death penalty. Part C contains exercises and activities designed to enhance understanding of the texts in Part B and to help students to decide what they think about the issues involved. The book is intended to be used by advanced students of English in the upper grades of secondary schools and on the more basic courses in colleges and universities. By combining the two functions of reader and reference book it aims to offer students the most complete possible introduction to American life and institutions. The book could be used as a general companion to the study of fictional (and non-fictional) texts - for example, to provide the socio-economic background to a poem, drama, short story or complete novel or as a basic coursebook of an American Studies program. Used selectively, this book offers teachers and students information and reading material on a given aspect of America as and when this is appropriate.

Jennifer A. Lemak - Southern Life, Northern City (2008).jpg

Southern Life, Northern City is the inspirational story of an African American community in Albany that has fought doggedly for generations to preserve its legacy and way of life. In the 1920s and 1930s rural African American families living in Shubuta, Mississippi, began relocating to Albany, New York. These former sharecroppers initially settled in Albany's South End, but quickly became unhappy with the vice and overcrowding of city life.

Marshall Boswell, Carl Rollyson - Encyclopedia of American Literature, 1607–to the present (2002).jpg

This wide-ranging encyclopedia of American literature consists of three chronological volumes, each covering an era in American history.
Volume 1, which treats the Colonial and Revolutionary era, was written by Berkin (history, Baruch; Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution), while
Volumes 2 (The Age of Romanticism and Realism) and 3 (The Modern and Postmodern Period) were written by Paddock and Rollyson, respectively, who coauthored Herman Melville A to Z and hold Ph.D.s in English. All three volumes feature an introductory essay followed by alphabetically arranged entries and a chronology. The entries, which range from literary figures, genres, and literary characters to specific works, topical entries such as "Lost Generation," and musicals, provide not just facts but interpretation of the topic's importance as well. They are usually brief often only one to two paragraphs, although a few run over one page and conclude with a list of sources. The greatest downfall of this set is the lack of consistency. For example, only Volume 1 includes citations to works by the person under discussion, as well as a few secondary sources. Also, the cross references refer only to articles within a volume, not across the set. Thus, volumes 2 and 3 both include articles on detective fiction, but neither indicates that the other volume covers the same topic in a different time period. Worst of all, although each volume has a cumulative "List of Entries," there is no cumulative index. Authors are included here who do not appear in Continuum's recent Encyclopedia of American Literature, such as John Kennedy Toole and Patricia Highsmith. However, such authors do appear in the wonderful Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia, which remains more authoritative and larger in scope. Given these drawbacks as well as the steep price, this title is not recommended unless your library is in need of a chronological approach to American literature or a more current reference.

Robert M. Stern - Globalization and International Trade Policies (2009).jpg

This book brings together a collection of papers that Robert M Stern and his co-authors have written in recent years. The collection addresses a variety of issues pertinent to the global trading system. One group of papers deals with globalization in terms of what the public needs to know about this phenomenon and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO), whether some countries may be hurt by globalization, how global market integration relates to national sovereignty, and how and whether considerations of fairness are and should be dealt with in the global trading system and WTO negotiations. A second group of papers consists of analytical and computational modeling studies of multilateral, regional, and bilateral trading arrangements and negotiations from a global and national perspective for the United States and other major trading countries. The remaining papers include an empirical analysis of barriers to international services transactions and the consequences of liberalization, and issues of international trade and labor standards.

Thomas J. Tighe - Who's in Charge of America's Res earch Universities (2003).jpg

This book explores the American research university, and, in a larger sense, addresses knowledge creation in our society, since research universities are the primary means for the production and dissemination of basic knowledge in the public interest. Universities not only play a major role in technological, economic, and cultural development, but also prepare much of the country's leadership, particularly in the sciences, engineering, medicine, and other professions.

James E. Perone - The Sound of Stevie Wonder, His Words and Music (2006).jpg

Since his professional debut in 1962, Stevie Wonder has recorded sixty-four singles that have made the Billboard top 100, including ten that reached number one. Wonder was one of the first Motown artists to have complete control over the writing, arranging, and recording of his songs, and achieved that stature before he was 20 years old. He has won 17 Grammy awards, was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and earned the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. Equally important, his work as a producer, arranger, and instrumentalist on other artists' recordings has put him in the highest rank of musical collaborators. This is the first work of criticism on this important documentarian of American life, as well as the introductory volume in The Praeger Singer-Songwriter Collection. Through a combination of biography and critical analysis, James Perone's groundbreaking new book reveals the many ways in which Stevie Wonder's body of work emerged, developed, reflected its time, and influenced myriad other artists.

After revealing the social, cultural, and political context of Wonder's work, the book provides detailed analysis of his compositions and recordings, with a focus on both his well-known songs and those known only to his hardcore fans. The volume also contains discussions of cover versions of Wonder's compositions, a discography of his recordings, a song title index, an annotated bibliography, and a general index.
