'The women of CourtWatch did what they were told couldn't be done. They drove a group of powerful and entrenched family court judges off the bench - someone called them 'the babes who slew the Goliath.' It was quite a victory' - Carole Bell Ford, from the Introduction. Houston was a terrible place to divorce or seek child custody in the 1980s and early 1990s. Family court judges routinely rendered verdicts that damaged the interests of women and children. In some especially shocking cases, they even granted custody to fathers who had been accused of molesting their own children. Yet despite persistent allegations of cronyism, incompetence, sexism, racism, bribery, and fraud, the judges wielded such political power and influence that removing them seemed all but impossible.

Grade 5-7-These slim volumes contain much information about their subjects and the times in which they lived. In both, the politics and conflicts of the period and other, related key figures are also discussed. A few boxed texts within each book provide additional background information. Framed and captioned, color and black-and-white photos of sites and reproductions of portraits and scenes of daily life complement the texts. Unfortunately, the picture credits note the sources of the illustrations but not artists or dates. In Roger Williams a modern-day reenactment scene is included but not identified as such and the same illustration of a Quaker couple appears in both books. Nonintimi-dating additional purchases.

Part of Facts On File's American Biographies series, American Political Leaders concentrates on 250 of the most influential leaders who directed the nation's political life from colonial times to present. Each entry considers the subject's life, presenting both personal details and historical context and discussing the person's importance to U.S. history. Each entry also includes further reading suggestions and, in some cases, Web sites.

The scope encompasses presidents, major party candidates, third-party presidential candidates, Supreme Court justices, Speakers of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congress, cabinet officers, diplomats, and three First Ladies. Among examples are Shirley Chisholm, Henry Clay, John Foster Dulles, Horace Greeley, Newt Gingrich, John McCain, and Earl Warren. Inclusion was based on frequency of mention in secondary and college textbooks in U.S. history and political science. For those recent leaders not yet elevated to the status of the college textbook, the author used newspaper and other media sources, relying on Internet resources only when they were considered authoritative. Colonial and Revolutionary War personages are included as well as leaders of the Confederate States of America.

Of great importance for a reference book such as this one are the indexes. In addition to a general name and subject index, entries are indexed by "Offices Held or Sought" and year of birth. "Offices Held or Sought" has categories such as "Unsuccessful Candidate for President or Vice President," "Subcabinet Official," and "Diplomat." This readable volume is recommended for high-school, public, and undergraduate libraries, especially those that have found other titles in the American Biographies series useful.

The difficulties of writing cogently about jazz—of discerning musical regularities in a genre built around improvisatory jams, and a narrative thread that transcends haphazard biography—are admirably addressed in this history. Critic Giddins (Bing Crosby) and historian DeVeaux (The Birth of Bebop) have an easier task in the book's first half, which traces jazz's coalescence in New Orleans out of varied strands of black music, its shaping by Armstrong, Ellington and other giants and its efflorescence in the big band era as the soundtrack of the American century. The tune grows unavoidably less catchy as postwar bebop and successor avant-garde tendencies transform jazz into a self-conscious art music epitomized by John Coltrane's existential squawk. (The authors maintain a cordial respect for every strain of modern jazz except Kenny G: There are many things to dislike about smooth jazz—for example, everything, they sputter.) The multimedia work contains moment-by-moment exegeses of classic recordings (2:13: [Artie] Shaw's line climaxes on a dramatic high note) that readers can find on the publisher's Web site, along with study aids. The authors' fluent, engaging treatment mixes scholarly lore and sociocultural analysis with piquant character studies and rapt evocations of musical artistry; the result is a treasure-trove for fans and students alike.

--This is a must-have book for all 'serious' wilderness travellers. Goes way beyond the current thinking in politically-correct non-impact camping (neccessary is highly used parks, etc.) and every recent survival manual ('gotta getta gadget to meet any outdoor eventuality'). Clearly presents truly useful information on selecting & fully using the knife, axe & bow saw (do you know how to fell a live wrist-thick tree in less than 1 minute with a 10cm/4" knife?) Also the most complete & accessible explanations of firelighting (with match, flint & steel, and the bowdrill), fire use for heat & cooking, all-season shelters from natural materials. As an outdoor survival instructor I will attest that most survival books are full of BAD even DANGEROUS misinformation; current authors either regurgitate someone else's bad ideas without fully testing the theories or operate under the "well, this idea didn't kill me over the past 24 hours so it must be okay" notion. If you would like to really know how to build a conifer bough lean-to with bed & fire that will keep you sleeping at -40 degrees C/F, buy this book!

--Northern Bushcraft is not a complete "Survival Manual" sort of book, it does not pretend to be an encyclopedia. In format and focus I would most closely compare it to Angier's How to Stay Alive in the Woods, though it is much more focused in its consideration of a smaller number of skills which the author considers critical. The chapters on the safe use of the axe and knife are the best I have ever read and either could stand alone as a separate book. I would call this book a great value in consideration of the gravity of injury which reading it just might prevent, and I believe it of general interest to the wiider audience of outdoor tool users rather than just Northwoods types.

In The First Cold War, Donald E. Davis and Eugene P. Trani review the Wilson administration's attitudes toward Russia before, during, and after the Bolshevik seizure of power. They argue that before the Russian Revolution, Woodrow Wilson had little understanding of Russia and made poor appointments that cost the United States Russian goodwill. Wilson later reversed those negative impressions by being the first to recognize Russia's Provisional Government, resulting in positive U.S.-Russian relations until Lenin gained power in 1917. Wilson at first seemed unsure whether to recognize or repudiate Lenin and the Bolsheviks. His vacillation finally ended in a firm repudiation when he opted for a diplomatic quarantine having almost all of the ingredients of the later Cold War. Davis and Trani argue that Wilson deserves mild criticism for his early indecision and inability to form a coherent policy toward what would become the Soviet Union.

Italians were the largest group of immigrants to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, and hundreds of thousands led and participated in some of the period's most volatile labor strikes. Yet until now, Italian women's political activism and cultures of resistance have been largely invisible. In Living the Revolution, Jennifer Guglielmo brings to life the Italian working-class women who helped shape the vibrant, transnational, radical political culture that expanded into the emerging industrial union movement.
&9;
Guglielmo imaginatively documents the activism of two generations of New York and New Jersey women who worked in the needle and textile trades. She explores the complex and distinctive ways immigrant women and their American-born daughters drew on Italian traditions of protest to form new urban female networks of everyday resistance and political activism. And she shows how their commitment to revolutionary and transnational social movements diminished as they became white working-class Americans. The rise of fascism, the Red Scare, and the deprivations of the Great Depression led many to embrace nationalism and racism, ironically to try to meet the same desires for economic justice and dignity that had inspired their enthusiasm for anarchism, socialism, and communism.

This book traces the interplay of class, gender, and politics in progressive-era Seattle, Washington during the formative period of industrialization and the establishment of a national market economy. With the rapid westward expansion of the capitalist marketplace by the dawn of the 20th century, national political and economic pressures significantly transformed both city and region. Despite the region's vast natural resources, the West had a highly urbanized population, surpassing even that of the industrial Northeast. Westerners celebrated the region's wide-open spaces, and even though a large part of the West's economy was centered in the mines, fields, and forests, most chose to live in the city.

This stirring study situates one of the most subversive yet profoundly American of social movements at the heart of the nation's history. Historian Dray (At the Hands of Persons Unknown) follows organized labor from the struggles of early 19th-century female textile workers to the present-day retreat of organized labor following the failed 1981 air trafic controllers' strike. His episodic narrative, structured around major strikes, shows labor's heroic age as an era of naked class warfare: strikers died by the dozens in pitched battles with police, soldiers, and Pinkerton agents, and such charismatic organizers as Eugene Debs, Big Bill Haywood, and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn braved prison and worse. The post-WWII period, by contrast, is a story of union conservatism, corruption scandals, and one rout after another at the hands of union-busting corporations abetted by government indifference. Organized labor's legacy, the author argues, is as much political as economic; it challenges bedrock American values of self-reliance while championing civil liberties--IWW speakers faced mass arrest for their public square orating--and bringing rights to the workplace. Packed with vivid characters and dramatic scenes, Dray's fine recap of a neglected but vital tradition has much to say about labor's current straits.

Nerburn (Neither Wolf Nor Dog: On Forgotten Roads with an Indian Elder) brings balanced passion to this popular history of the man best known for his sad speech signaling his tribe's surrender at the end of an 1,800-mile retreat from their homeland in Oregon: "I will fight no more forever." Nerburn's novelistic chronicle moves from the kind welcome Lewis and Clark receive from the Nez Percé in 1805 to General O.O. Howard's May 1877 order for the tribespeople to move onto a reservation in Idaho within 30 days.

Im Film Easy Rider sagt Dennis Hopper, A man went looking for America, but he couldn t find it anywhere, während David Bowie in den Heather Cronicles bekennt: This is not America!

The Wildfire Reader presents, in an affordable paperback edition, the essays included in the larger, photographic companion volume, Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy. Wildfires are an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon that have shaped North America’s landscapes since the dawn of time. They are a force that we cannot really control, and thus understanding, appreciating, and learning to live with wildfire is ultimately our wisest public policy.

Unless popular myths about capitalism are challenged, school reform will stall well short of success.
—From the introduction to Education and Capitalism "This is a thoughtful, thorough examination of the virtues of capitalism and free markets as a way to organize elementary and secondary education in a democracy."
—Milton Friedman Senior research fellow, Hoover Institution Nobel Prize winner in economic sciences For parents, teachers, policymakers, taxpayers, and scholars who want better schools for children regardless of their race, social background, or parents' income, this book asserts that, if schools were "privatized" (moved from the public to the private sector), they could once again do a superior job providing kindergarten to twelfth-grade (K–12) education. Drawing on insights and findings from history, psychology, sociology, political science, and economics, the authors reveal
Why schools and past efforts at school reform have failed
Why capitalism can be trusted to produce safe and effective schools—and why economics is an appropriate tool for studying how schooling is delivered
What history tells us about the government's role in schooling—and why keeping most schooling in the hands of government does not help achieve equality and democracy
How guidelines for voucher programs that protect the poorest and most vulnerable members of society otherwise work as well as their proponents predict
Why conservatives and libertarians should support school voucher programs
The authors show that, unless popular myths about capitalism are challenged, school reform will stall well short of success. Without a broader understanding of how and why markets work, the small steps in the right direction taken at the end of the twentieth century risk being swept away at the start of the twenty-first.
