These pages were written in the hope that they might be read and considered by the more reasonable section of the British public. But they are likely at the present moment to find more response in America than in England. The sympathies of Americans appear to be, generally and warmly, on the side of the allies, because they recognize that a German victory would imperil the principles and the spirit for which America stands. But Americans also recognize that no military victory or defeat can of itself secure that durable peace by which alone democratic liberties can be assured and developed. The whole system of international relations must be transformed by a deliberate act of policy if this result is to be achieved. The states must combine not in temporary alliances and counter-alliances, pregnant with new wars, but in a union to develop the law of nations and to sustain it against laws breakers. As I write, this country is engaged in a campaign for preparedness. Preparedness for what? To enter that European competition in armaments, which alone is a sufficient cause of war? Or to put armaments, jointly with other states, behind law and against aggression, from whatever Power aggression may be threatened? To do the former would be merely to add to the dangers of war a new factor. To do the latter might start the nations on the road to a durable peace. Anarchy and destruction, or law and reconstruction, is the choice before the world; and the United States during the next months may largely help to determine which it shall be. A practical proposal for making the transition from anarchy to law is put forward by the American League to Enforce Peace. 1 It is to some such solution that this essay points. For it shows how behind this war, as behind wars in the past, lay not merely the aggression of Germany, but the whole tradition and practice of European diplomacy. To take the lead in introducing into international relations that new policy which alone can guarantee and preserve civilization may be the special mission and glory of the United States. On their action at this crisis of the race the future of society may depend. And if this little book shall have any smallest influence in clarifying and concentrating American opinion upon the problem to be solved, it will have fulfilled the purpose for which it was written

Harry G. Lang - Edmund Booth, Deaf Pioneer (2004).jpg

Edmund Booth was born in 1810 and died in 1905, and during the 94 years of his life, he epitomized virtually everything that characterized an American legend of that century. In his prime, Booth stood 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighed in at 210 pounds, and wore a long, full beard. He taught school in Hartford, CT, then followed his wife-to-be, Mary Ann Walworth, west to Anamosa, Iowa, where in 1840, he built the area’s first frame house. He pulled up stakes nine years later to travel the Overland Trail on his way to join the California Gold Rush. After he returned to Iowa in 1854, he became the editor of the Anamosa Eureka, the local newspaper. Edmund Booth fit perfectly the mold of the ingenious pioneer of 19th-century America, except for one unusual difference — he was deaf.
Edmund Booth: Deaf Pioneer follows the amazing career of this American original and his equally amazing wife in fascinating detail. Author Harry Lang vividly portrays Booth and his wife by drawing from a remarkable array of original material. A prolific writer, Booth corresponded with his fiancé from the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, and he kept a journal during his days on the California trail, parts of which have been reproduced here. He also wrote an autobiographical essay when he was 75, and his many newspaper articles through the years bore first-hand witness to the history of his times, from the Civil War to the advent of the 20th century.
Edmund Booth depicts a larger-than-life man in larger-than-life times, but perhaps its greatest contribution derives from its narrative about pioneer days as seen through Deaf eyes. Booth became a respected senior statesman of the American Deaf community, and blended with his stories of the era’s events are anecdotes and issues vital to Deaf people and their families. His story proves again that extraordinary people vary in many ways, but they often possess a common motive in acting to enhance their own communities.

Janice Dickin - Suitable for the Wilds, Letters fr om Northern Alberta 1929-1931 (2006).jpg

Born in England in 1905, Mary Percy Jackson graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1927 with degrees in medicine and surgery. Responding to an advert in a medical journal recruiting doctors to work in Alberta, she moved there in 1929, settling in the Peace River area. Assigned to a territory of nearly 400 square miles, Jackson travelled mostly on horseback through mainly unmarked trails ministering to her patients. Vigilant about nutrition and vaccination, she promoted good health for five generations of Metis, Native and homesteader populations. In 1975 she was named 'Woman of the Year' by the Voice of Native Women for her tireless devotion and years of dedicated service. This book offers readers a new opportunity to discover this true trailblazer through her fascinating letters and correspondence that demonstrate clearly her profound impact on Alberta's social development in the early 20th century.

Over the past century, three nationally significant histories have vied for space and place in Independence, Missouri. Independence was declared Zion by Joseph Smith, served as a gathering and provisioning point for trails west, and was called home by President Truman for sixty-four years. Taylor has integrated research from newspapers, public documents, oral histories, and private papers to detail how the community has preserved these various legacies. He places the role of preservation in Independence not only within the larger context of preservation in the United States but also within the context of American environmental history.

This narrative synthesizes the fifty-year story of the struggle to make the federal government more responsive to the plight of African American workers and the efforts to make the nation's workplaces significantly more fair and just towards this long-oppressed population. Useful to scholars but accessible to all, To Advance Their Opportunities is an engaging portrait of the role of government in seeking to realize the goal of a color-blind society of equals.

L. Mark Raab - California Maritime Archaeology, A San Clemente Island Perspective (2009).jpg

San Clemente Island is a microcosm of California coastal archaeology from prehistoric through historic times-not only because of the extensiveness of its archaeological remains but because those remains have been so well preserved. In California Maritime Archaeology, the authors use the island as a platform to explore evidence of early seafaring, colonization, paleoenvironmental change, and cultural interaction along the California coast. They make a strong case that San Clemente Island should be seen as a kind of "California archaeological Galapagos," offering an extraordinary variety of ancient life as well as surprising information about prehistoric hunter-gatherers of the northern Pacific.

Lera Knox - Travels of a Country Woman (2009).jpg

The former Lera Margaret Ussery, born in post-Victorian Tennessee, began her colorful adventures in 1896. That early portion of her life is described in Goodness Gracious, Miss Agnes: Patchwork of Country Living, the first book to be published by the University of Tennessee digital press, the Newfound Press.
She described her family background from pioneer days in Middle Tennessee. From her phenomenal memory she recalled the life of a shy, bookish child in a small town, on her grandparents’ little farm, through her experiences as a student, then as a teacher. She told of the continuation of her education as she moved from being “a city girl” to being “Mrs. Alex Knox,” a farmer’s wife and the mother of two.
She described the early years of hers and Alex’s life, from the arrival of the newlyweds in the hundred-year-old manor house of a former plantation, to life with their two children, Margaret and Jack. (She said later that was the happiest time of her life when the children were small.)
Little did Lera know at that time that she had many more adventures ahead, many of which she was to describe in newspaper articles in the Nashville (TN) Banner, the Columbia (TN) Daily Herald, and the Maury (TN)Democrat. Described in her own words, the accounts have been collected and put together lovingly here by us, the daughter Margaret, and son Jack’s daughter Carol.

Sharon Erickson Nepstad - Religion and War Resista nce in the Plowshares Movement (2008).jpg

As the nuclear arms race exploded in the 1980s, a group of U.S. religious pacifists used radical nonviolence to intervene. Armed with hammers, they broke into military facilities to pound on missiles and pour blood on bombers, enacting the prophet Isaiah's vision: 'Nations shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.' Calling themselves the Plowshares movement, these controversial activists received long prison sentences; nonetheless, their movement grew and expanded to Europe and Australia. In this book, Sharon Erickson Nepstad documents the emergence and international diffusion of this unique form of high-risk collective action. Drawing on interviews, original survey research, and archival data, Nepstad explains why some Plowshares groups have persisted over time while others have struggled or collapsed. Comparing the U.S. movement with less successful Plowshares groups overseas, Nepstad reveals how decisions about leadership, organization, retention, and cultural adaptations influence movements' long-term trajectories.

The book includes chapters by some of the nation's leading experts on direct democracy. As per the reviewer, 'There is relatively little study of how the use of initiatives affects voters, groups, political parties, legislatures, executives or the judiciary. This project proposes to addresses some of these deficits in the literature.'In this volume, a series of contributions look at the impact of direct democracy on those processes of representative democracy to raise, and answer, the question: Does direct democracy harm representative democracy?

Karen Orren, Stephen Skowronek - The Search for A merican Political Development (2004).jpg

American political development (APD) has claimed in recent years the attention of a growing band of political scientists, and scholars have begun to speak of "APD" as a subfield within the discipline. This book provides a justification for studying politics historically, not only for what it reveals about the roots of political affairs at the present time but what it teaches about politics as an ongoing activity. Placing the character of political institutions at the center of analysis, the authors survey past and current scholarship and outline a course of study for the future.

China’s successful test of an anti-satellite weapon in 2007, followed by the U.S. destruction earlier this year of an out-of-control U.S. satellite, demonstrated that space may soon no longer remain a relative sanctuary from military conflict. As the United States, China, and others increasingly benefit from the information that military and intelligence satellites provide, the temptation to attack these satellites provides troubling potential for instability and conflict in space that could dramatically affect U.S. military capabilities on earth.

01 - USA1 - David Morgan - Protestants and Pictures, Religion, Vis... Culture, and the Age of American Mass Production 1999.jpg

In this lavishly illustrated book, David Morgan surveys the visual culture that shaped American Protestantism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries--a vast record of images in illustrated bibles, Christian almanacs, children's literature, popular religious books, charts, broadsides, Sunday school cards, illuminated devotional items, tracts, chromos, and engravings. His purpose is to explain the rise of these images, their appearance and subject matter, how they were understood by believers, the uses to which they were put, and what their relation was to technological innovations, commerce, and the cultural politics of Protestantism. His overarching argument is that the role of images in American Protestantism greatly expanded and developed during this period.

Lori Rotskoff - Love on the Rocks, Men, Women, and Alcohol in Post-World War II America (2002).jpg

In this fascinating history of alcohol in postwar American culture, Lori Rotskoff draws on short stories, advertisements, medical writings, and Hollywood films to investigate how gender norms and ideologies of marriage intersected with scientific and popular ideas about drinking and alcoholism. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, recreational drinking became increasingly accepted among white, suburban, middle-class men and women. But excessive or habitual drinking plagued many families. How did people view the "problem drinkers" in their midst? How did husbands and wives learn to cope within an "alcoholic marriage?" And how was drinking linked to broader social concerns during the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War era? By the 1950s, Rotskoff explains, mental health experts, movie producers, and members of self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon helped bring about a shift in the public perception of alcoholism from "sin" to "sickness." Yet alcoholism was also viewed as a family problem that expressed gender-role failure for both women and men. On the silver screen (in movies such as The Lost Weekend and The Best Years of Our Lives) and on the printed page (in stories by writers such as John Cheever), in hospitals and at Twelve Step meetings, chronic drunkenness became one of the most pressing public health issues of the day.

01 - USA1 - Mark A. Noll, Luke E. Harlow - Religion and American P...Politics, From the Colonial Period to the Present 2007.jpg

How do religion and politics interact in America? How has that relationship changed over time? Why have American religious and political thought sometimes developed along a parallell course while at other times they have moved in opposite directions? These are among the many important and fascinating questions addressed in this volume. Originally published in 1990 as Religion and American Politics: From The Colonial Period to the 1980s (4921 paperback copies sold), this book offers the first comprehensive survey of the relationship between religion and politics in America. It features a stellar lineup of scholars, including Richard Carwardine, Nathan Hatch, Daniel Walker Howe, George Marsden, Martin Marty, Harry Stout, John Wilson, Robert Wuthnow, and Bertram Wyatt-Brown. Since its publication, the influence of religion on American politics--and, therefore, interest in the topic--has grown exponentially. For this new edition, Mark Noll and new co-editor Luke Harlow offer a completely new introduction, and also commission several new pieces and eliminate several that are now out of date. The resulting book offers a historically-grounded approach to one of the most divisive issues of our time, and serves a wide variety of courses in religious studies, history, and politics.
