In any historical appreciation of Marine Corps Aviation, there are two factors which make Marine Aviation unique. The first is the close relationship between Marine and Naval Aviation, and the second is the unchanging objective of Marine Aviation to provide direct support to Marine ground forces in combat.

One of the main reasons why America has had such a hard time getting into this war," said my friend, thoughtfully, " is that, when they started the present world conflict, the Germans sprung on humanity an entirely new kind of war. And one so amazingly different from any war with which Americans had ever been connected that for a long time they didn't believe what they were seeing was really so—like the farmer who gazing upon a giraffe for the first time, waggled his head and remarked, weakly, Go on! There ain't no such animal !

The September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., took place while this revision was in progress. Some commentators said that “everything would change” as a result of the events of that day. It remains to be seen whether the attacks will indeed have a lasting impact on the way Americans live.

Lydia Maria Child presents the life of the dynamic nineteenth-century writer who, through her pen and at great personal cost to her literary career, spoke out for those silenced in society -- slaves, Native Americans, women, and the poor. At the dawn of the 1830s, Lydia Maria Child was a celebrated author, known for her popular domestic handbook, The Frugal Housewife, and Hobomok, a novel of American Indian life. In 1833, with the publication of her controversial Appeal in Favor of that Class of Americans Called Africans, Child's life changed dramatically from literary figure to antislavery activist. Her Appeal helped ignite the abolitionist movement, and several antislavery leaders -- including Wendell Phillips and Charles Sumner -- credited it with converting them to the cause. An inspirational look at an extraordinary woman, Lydia Maria Child is the story of how one person fought for the basic human right of freedom.

Chicago was a tumultuous and exciting city in 1889. Immigration, industrialization, urbanization, and politics created a vortex of social change. This lively chaos called out for both celebration and reform, and two women, Ellen Gates Starr and Jane Addams, responded to this challenge by founding the social settlement Hull-House. Addams has become famous as a Nobel laureate, but Starr remains virtually unknown. On Art, Labor, and Religion Starr's writings and biography are introduced for the first time as a contribution to national and international sociological thought and practice.

The death of General George S. Patton is shrouded in mystery. While officially the result of an unfortunate car accident, the evidence points to a far more malevolent plot: murder. So says investigative and military journalist Robert K. Wilcox in his book: Target: Patton: The Plot to Assassinate General George S. Patton. Written like a WWII spy thriller and meticulously researched, Target: Patton leads you through that fateful December day in 1945, revealing a chilling plan to assassinate General Patton. Backing up this shocking story with facts, photos, and eyewitness statements, Wilcox reveals long-hidden documents and accounts that explain how secrets Patton knew—and his strong anti-Soviet views—may have cost him his life. Not only does Wilcox reveal how, why, and when, he also names names—exposing little-known stories and secrets of such key players as General "Wild Bill" Donovan, the storied head of the OSS (the predecessor to the CIA); an OSS assassin; an Army intelligence agent; and even Josef Stalin himself. Target: Patton challenges readers to look at the evidence and question the conventional wisdom. After reading it, few will think of General Patton—or the circumstances surrounding his death—in the same way again.

She was famous for being famous-Americana at its Scarlet Letter-wearing best. A bodacious young girl from Texas, Anna remade herself into the centerfold of the world. She was a "dumb blonde," a stripper, a Playboy Playmate, who boldly took her case against her billionaire husband's family all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her tragic life and untimely death evoke an odd mix of fascination, shock, and dismay. And through it all, there still exists a voracious thirst to discover more about who she actually was...and how she really died. In a book that is sure to surprise even the most avid pop culture junkies, Rita Cosby blows the lid off this astounding story. After an in-depth investigation, this is the definitive journalistic account of the Anna Nicole Smith saga-with unearthed secrets and explosive, never-before-told information.

Mexican War was the U.S. Army's first experience waging an extended conflict in a foreign land. This brief war is often overlooked by casual students of history since it occurred so close to the American Civil War and is overshadowed by the latter's sheer size and scope. Yet, the Mexican War was instrumental in shaping the geographical boundaries of the United States. At the conclusion of this conflict, the U.S. had added some one million square miles of territory. The Mexican War still has much to teach us about projecting force, conducting operations in hostile territory with a small force that is dwarfed by the local population, urban combat, the difficulties of occupation, and the courage and perseverance of individual soldiers.

Quarters One is a fascinating look at a unique residence with historic connections, built over two hundred years ago in historic surroundings at Fort Myer, Virginia. Some of the U.S. Army's leading families have lived in this house, which by 1908 became the permanent home of the Army chiefs of staff and their families. Through interesting illustrations and vignettes, the booklet captures the rich sense of history and tradition that pervades this fine National Historic Landmark, and serves to honor Army families everywhere.

During the final months of his life, Walt Disney was consumed with the world-wide problems of cities. His development concept at the time of his death on December 15th, 1966 would be his team's conceptual response to the ills of the inner cities and the sprawl of the megalopolis: the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow or, as it became known, EPCOT.This beautifully written, instantly engrossing volume focuses on the original concept of EPCOT, which was conceived by Disney as an experimental community of about 20,000 people on the Disney World property in central Florida. With its radial plan, 50-acre town center enclosed by a dome, themed international shopping area, greenbelt, high-density apartments, satellite communities, monorail and underground roads, the original EPCOT plan is reminiscent of post-war Stockholm and the British New Towns, as well as today's transit-oriented development theory.Unfortunately, Disney himself did not live long enough to witness the realization of his model city. However, EPCOT's evolution into projects such as the EPCOT Center and the town of Celebration displays a remarkable commitment by the Disney organization to the original EPCOT philosophy, one which continues to have relevance in the fields of planning and development.

This volume is the first in a series which will record the experiences of the Quartermaster Corps in World War II. It should serve to impress students of military affairs, particularly those in staff and command positions, with the vastness and complexity of the activity involved in equipping and maintaining troops in the field. It tells a story of rapid expansion to meet the needs of a growing Army, of organizational readjustment in the midst of operations, of supply programs scrapped or modified in the face of unexpected demands, of improvisation and production under pressure when plans were inadequate or Jacking. It clearly demonstrates the necessity in time of peace for a flexible organization, vision and care in planning, and a program of continuous military research and development to meet the sudden impact of war.

This volume is the second in a series which records the experiences of the Quartermaster Corps in World War II. Instead of the single theme of supply, emphasized in Volume I, a variety of activities are discussed, some of which — conservation, reclamation, and salvage operations, and industrial demobilization — are related to supply. Others such as laundry operations, training of dogs, and care of the dead, are wholly unrelated to the Quartermaster supply function but are nevertheless important to the Army. The volume stresses the multiplicity of the Corps' duties and, in the complexities of modern warfare, the Army's need for trained Quartermaster specialists and units to support combat troops. The narrative sets forth the policies and problems involved in procuring and training Quartermaster personnel and the manner in which the Quartermaster Corps operated in the zone of interior.
