Keith Gandal - The Gun and the Pen, Hemingway, Fit zgerald, Faulkner, and the Fiction of Mobilization (2008).jpg

01 - USA3 - Keith Gandal - The Gun and the Pen, Hemingway, Fitzger...gerald, Faulkner, and the Fiction of Mobilization 2008.jpg

In this groundbreaking work of literary and historical scholarship, Keith Gandal shows that Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and William Faulkner were motivated, in their famous postwar novels, not by their experiences of the horrors of war but rather by their failure to have those experiences.
These "quintessential" male American novelists of the 1920s were all, for different reasons, deemed unsuitable as candidates for full military service or command and the result was, Gandal contends, that they felt themselves emasculated--not, as the usual story goes, due to their encounters with trench warfare, but because they got nowhere near the trenches or the real action. By bringing to light previously unexamined archival records of the Army, The Gun and the Pen demonstrates that the frustration of these authors' military ambitions took place in the forgotten context of a whole new set of methods employed in the mobilization for the Great War--unprecedented procedures that aimed to transform the Army into a meritocratic institution, indifferent to ethnic and class difference (though not racial, or black-white, difference). For these Lost Generation writers, the humiliating failure vis-a-vis the Army became a failure to compete successfully in a rising social order and against a new set of people. And it is that social order and those people--these effects of mobilization, and not other effects of the war--that the novels considered here both register and re-imagine.
Gandal's incisive readings of the famous fiction of this era against the backdrop of ethnicity, meritocracy, and sexuality closes with a coda on selected works from the 1930s, including prose by Djuna Barnes, Nathaniel West, and Henry Miller. Provocative and original, The Gun and the Pen restores these seminal novels to their proper historical context and proffers a radical revision of our understanding of the impact of World War I on twentieth-century American literature.

Corwin E. Smidt, Kevin R. den Dulk, James M. Penni ng, Stephen V. Monsma, Douglas L. Koopman - Pews, Prayers, and Participation, Religion and Civic Res ponsibility in America (2008).jpg

01 - USA3 - Corwin E. Smidt, Kevin R. den Dulk, James M. Penning, ...ion, Religion and Civic Responsibility in America 2008.jpg

Is the 'private' experience of religion counterproductive to engagement in public life? Does the 'public' experience of religion contribute anything distinctive to civic engagement? "Pews, Prayers, and Participation: Religion and Civic Responsibility in America" offers a fresh approach to key questions about what role religion plays in fostering civic responsibility in contemporary American society. Written by five prominent scholars of religion and politics, led by Calvin College's Corwin Smidt, the book brilliantly articulates how religion shapes participation in a range of civic activities - from behaviors (such as membership in voluntary associations, volunteering, and charitable contributions) to capacities (e.g., civic skills and knowledge), to virtues (e.g., law-abidingness, tolerance, and work ethic). In the course of their study the authors examine whether an individual exhibits a diminished, a privatized, a public, or an integrated form of religious expression, based on the individual's level of participation in both the public (worship) or private (prayer) dimensions of religious life. They question whether the privatization of religious life is counterproductive to engagement in public life, and they show that religion does indeed play a significant role in fostering civic responsibility across each of its particular facets."Pews, Prayers, and Participation" is a bold and provocative clarion call to the continuing importance and changing nature of religion in American public life. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of religion and politics, and culture and politics, as well as general readers with an interest in the impact of religion in the public sphere.

John M. Lipski - Varieties of Spanish in the Unite d States (2008).jpg

Thirty-three million people in the United States speak some variety of Spanish, making it the second most used language in the country. Some of these people are recent immigrants from many different countries who have brought with them the linguistic traits of their homelands, while others come from families who have lived in this country for hundreds of years. John M. Lipski traces the importance of the Spanish language in the United States and presents an overview of the major varieties of Spanish that are spoken there. "Varieties of Spanish in the United States" provides - in a single volume - useful descriptions of the distinguishing characteristics of the major varieties, from Cuban and Puerto Rican, through Mexican and various Central American strains, to the traditional varieties dating back to the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries found in New Mexico and Louisiana. Each profile includes a concise sketch of the historical background of each Spanish-speaking group; current demographic information; its sociolinguistic configurations; and, information about the phonetics, morphology, syntax, lexicon, and each group's interactions with English and other varieties of Spanish. Lipski also outlines the scholarship that documents the variation and richness of these varieties, and he probes the phenomenon popularly known as 'Spanglish'. The distillation of an entire academic career spent investigating and promoting the Spanish language in the United States, this valuable reference for teachers, scholars, students, and interested bystanders serves as a testimony to the vitality and legitimacy of the Spanish language in the United States. It is recommended for courses on Spanish in the United States, Spanish dialectology and sociolinguistics, and teaching Spanish to heritage speakers.

Jan Elvin - The Box from Braunau, In Search of My Father's War (2009).jpg

As a small child, Jan Elvin thought very little about the tin box with the simple inscription her father had brought home from World War II. To her young eyes, it seemed ordinary enough, featuring a rough etching of a man and woman with the words, “Braunau 1944.” What she would later discover is that the box had been a gift from an inmate at a German slave labor camp when her father was just a young soldier. And what it contained would start her on a long journey to uncover some of the fascinating and horrifying history surrounding the Second World War—as well as a search to understand the man forever haunted by its memories.
The Box from Braunau is both a memoir of a father-daughter relationship damaged by the ghosts of war, and a chronicle of a World War II veteran whose return to civilian life was permanently scarred by nightmares of combat and concentration camps. We explore the lives of Bill Elvin and his daughter through excerpts from the diary he kept during the war and private letters, as well as newspaper articles he wrote as a journalist on his return. We follow him from his first days on the battlefield as a lieutenant in Patton’s Army to his time at the Ebensee concentration camp where he witnessed firsthand the prisoners’ sufferings brought about by Nazi atrocities. Through his life, we gain a new understanding of the War and its effects on the men and women who fought in it. Featuring exclusive interviews with family members and fellow soldiers, as well as with survivors of the camps, The Box from Braunau is an illuminating look at war through the eyes of one family.

01 - USA3 - Peter M. Bowers, David W. Menard - Buzz Numbers, The E...Americas Military Aircraft Identification System 2006.jpg

The Buzz Number system, the famous identification system for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force aircraft from late 1945 into the mid-1960s, was developed as a deterrent to 8th Air Force pilots engaged in unauthorized low-level flying over post-war Europe. This practice, called 'buzzing', prompted the need for ground observers to be able to identify and report a particular offending aircraft. In response to this need, a system of letters and numbers was developed to uniquely identify each aircraft in inventory. This book includes an in-depth explanation of the buzz number system as well as its many applications. This book is the ultimate buzz number reference for modelers and aviation enthusiasts.

Beth Reiber, Linda Romine - Frommer's USA, 10th Ed ition (2007).jpg

Frommer’s USA is the perfect resource for domestic travelers looking to explore America, taking you all the way from the beaches of Hawaii to the theaters of New York City to the rugged Rocky Mountains. The guide includes information on destinations in all 50 states. You'll get the inside scoop on the hotels, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife in a multitude of cities—and a special “Best” icon highlights the best hotels, restaurants and attractions at the top destinations.

It's impossible for a single guidebook to completely cover a country as massive and diverse as America, but Frommer's USA comes close. Sure, some will quibble with destination choices (for example, the editors mention Martha's Vineyard, but not Nantucket) but overall, this 1,000-plus-page tome hits the mark.

Chapters focus on both major cities and larger regions (New England, Southern California, etc.), covering such basics as activities, lodging, and affordable restaurants, and doing so in excruciating detail (admission prices, hours of operation, directions, whether or not a hotel has valet parking). You'll also find plenty of full-page maps and quirky little sidebars (gourmet food stores in Napa, best Chicago blues bars). As if that weren't enough, there's an online travel directory with Web addresses for everything from Ticketmaster to Zagat's to Amtrak. If you plan on seeing even a sliver of what this country has to offer, take this guidebook with you.

Michael Lewitt - The Death of Capital, How Creativ e Policy Can Restore Stability (2010).jpg

In The Death of Capital, respected portfolio manager and longtime investment professional Michael Lewitt looks at how the U.S. economy has increasingly been dominated by short-term speculation rather than industrial expansion in recent years. These disastrous trends, described here as financialization, ignore the fact that capital itself is a highly unstable process rather than a fixed object or category. As a result of our failure to understand the true nature of capital, we have developed a financial and regulatory system that does exactly the opposite of what it should be doing—favoring obscurity over transparency and fomenting instability rather than growth.

W. Taylor Fain - American Ascendance and British R etreat in the Persian Gulf Region (2008).jpg

""American Ascendance and British Retreat in the Persian Gulf Region" is a well-written and -researched account of Anglo-American policy in the Persian Gulf from the end of the Second World War until the British withdrawal from east of Suez. It is a tale of personalities and administrations engaged in confrontation as well as cooperation, spun against the backdrop of an ever-more strategically important region plagued by both age-old and newer post-colonial quarrels."--Michael A. Palmer, author of "Guardians of the Gulf""" "This comprehensive and well-written book illuminates current issues without falling into the trap of present-mindedness, and it fills an important gap in the literature. Drawing on extensive archival sources and demonstrating a firm command of the secondary literature, Fain provides a clear account of policy-making in both the United States and Great Britain. His deep knowledge of both nations' policies enables him to present a nuanced account of the differences as well as the similarities in US and British policies toward the region."
--David S. Painter, Associate Professor of History, Georgetown University
This is a critical examination of the origins of American diplomacy in the greater Persian Gulf region. Through its coverage of the history of American diplomacy in the Persian Gulf, the book gives valuable context to our current foreign policy entanglements. And yet, as the reviewer points out, Fain illuminates current issues without falling into the trap of present-mindedness.There are few books that give a comprehensive and accessible account of America's diplomatic involvement in the Gulf. There are none that simultaneously give such a rich exploration of Britain's waning role. This book critically examines the origins of American diplomacy in the greater Persian Gulf region, arguing that it was the inability of the United States to contend effectively with the disintegration of British imperial authority in the Gulf that eventually led it to assume its current role in the region.

Glyn Davies - A History of Money, From Ancient Tim es to Present Day (2003).jpg

First published in hardback in 1994 and selected by the American Library Association as an Outstanding Academic Book, the revised and updated paperback edition includes the Barings crisis and the report by the Bank of England on Barings Bank; up-to-date information on the state of Japanese banking; changes in the financial scene in the United States; the UK housing market and the problem of negative equity. The paradox of why more coins than ever before are required in an increasingly cashless society is clearly explained, as is the role of the new Euro coin as the lowest common denominator in Europe's controversial single-currency system. The final section provides evidence to suggest that for most of the world's richer countries, the era of persistent inflation may well be at an end. This new edition is updated and takes account of important recent developments such as the independence of the Bank of England, the introduction of Euro notes and coins from January 1 2002, and developments in electronic money.
