A humble, happy look back from the man in black. Johnny Cash answers to many names; he's JR to childhood friends and family, John to bandmates, and Johnny to fans. ``Cash'' is the name wife June Carter reserves for ``the star, the egomaniac.'' The star gets plenty of ink here, from the early days at Sun Records--with Elvis, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis--to his current status as a darling of the alternative rock set. But it's the private man who's most compelling and surprisingly complex. Cash writes candidly of his recurring addiction to amphetamines and his concomitant shortcomings as a father, addresses his spirituality without sounding maudlin, and displays genuine humility at his success and very little bitterness at his abandonment by the country music establishment. A more accurate subtitle might be ``The Second Autobiography,'' since this volume covers some of the same ground as Cash's previous work, The Man in Black (1986), but a life so chock full of oddments (he once started a forest fire with an automobile and on another occasion was nearly disemboweled by an ostrich) and renegade stands (he opposed Vietnam, heresy to the nation's blue- collar constituency) easily merits a second look. Organized around the domiciles where he divides his time--homes in Tennessee, Florida, and Jamaica, as well as his tour bus--the book stays grounded in the present, mixing reflections on his 40-year career with a running chronicle of an ongoing tour. This novel approach minimizes the as-told-to blahs that plague many a celebrity autobiography and highlights Cash's wry humor and introspection. With the help of Carr, editor of Country Music magazine, Cash keeps the pace lively until the end, when the roses he throws everyone from grandkids to music biz buddies bog things down. Mostly, though, a pungent, substantive autobiography from one the most iconoclastic talents on the American music scene.

Ted Sorensen knew Kennedy the man, the senator, the candidate, and the president as no other associate did. From his hiring as a legislative assistant to Kennedy's death in 1963, Sorensen was with him during the key crises and turning points—including the spectacular race for the vice presidency at the 1956 convention, the launching of Kennedy's presidential candidacy, the TV debates with Nixon, and election night at Hyannis Port. The first appointment made by the new president was to name Ted Sorensen his Special Counsel.
In Kennedy, Sorensen recounts failures as well as successes with surprising candor and objectivity. He reveals Kennedy's errors on the Bay of Pigs, and his attitudes toward the press, Congress, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Sorensen saw firsthand Kennedy's actions in the Cuban missile crises, and the evolution of his beliefs on civil rights and arms control. First published in 1965 and reissued here with a new preface, Kennedy is an intimate biography of an extraordinary man, and one of the most important historical accounts of the twentieth century.

"Fascinatingly gruesome facts about our chief executives' final days can be found in this tastefully written travelogue, a tie-in to the cable net's recent, wildly popular (at least for C-SPAN) 'American Presidents' series. It's the perfect gift for that morbid political junkie in your family." -- Bruce Fretts, Entertainment Weekly

Grade 8 Up—This noteworthy resource offers students a day-by-day, comprehensive chronology of the events of the "Great War" that devastated Europe, dismantled the Ottoman Empire, and changed the nature of warfare. The detailed and highly readable account begins with the coronation of Wilhelm I and the birth of the German Empire in 1871, spans the course of the global war, and concludes with the July 24, 1923, signing of the Treaty of Lausanne. Entries for each date are prefaced by bold headings such as "Home Fronts," Western Front," "Air," and "Peace Making," which do an excellent job guiding readers to information pertinent to particular searches. Familiar tales such as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, the sinking of the Lusitania, and peacemaking at Versailles are deftly recounted with economic flair alongside not-so-familiar episodes from the U.S. home front to Far Eastern military campaigns. Occasional black-and-white photos personalize the text. A secondary feature of the work is a 37-page compilation of brief biographies on seminal political and military participants including Winston Churchill, Georges Clemenceau, and German Commander in Chief Paul von Hindenburg. These profiles provide the subject's dates, position during the war, and a summary of duties. Additional features include statistics on mobilized manpower, casualty lists, 10 detailed black-and-white maps, and an extensive bibliography arranged by subject. Woodward's valuable work will allow students to follow the course of campaigns, peace negotiations, and the changing face of battle.

The Vietnam War was one of the most controversial and divisive events in U.S. history since the Civil War. Stretching from approximately 1957 to 1973, this watershed event claimed the lives of thousands of Americans and cost billions of dollars. The Vietnam War Almanac contains a detailed, day-by-day chronology of the events of this conflict and an A-to-Z dictionary of the key figures involved in the Vietnam War, in addition to a comprehensive listing of vital statistics in the appendix. Maps, illustrations, and an extensive bibliography aid further research and complete this invaluable almanac.

Grade 9 Up–The author's stated aim is to provide an objective account of military facets of the American Revolution in response to Hollywood's biased portrayals in movies such as The Patriot. The first part of the book is a detailed chronology of the conflict from 1763 to 1783; next come 368 alphabetically arranged topical and biographical essays of 500-2000 words each, followed by an appendix containing 21 clear, informative battle maps. A number of black-and-white reproductions of paintings and drawings are included. Bibliographies provide citations to current scholarly research. There are essays on Chief Cornplanter, Chief Cornstalk, and Chief Joseph Brant, but none on the role of various Native American tribes. Although there is much here to aid beginning research, this information has been amply covered in other works.

This no-nonsense compendium is intended for serious researchers and offers a considerable amount of information in an accessible and manageable format. Coverage is limited to war-specific material: campaigns, politics, diplomacy, and individuals who were directly involved. There are two main sections: a chronology and a historical dictionary. The day-by-day chronology spans two decades (1763-1783) and tracks significant developments on various fronts: regional battles and skirmishes, diplomatic and political maneuverings, and so on. Events are described in single sentences or brief paragraphs and are preceded by boldface subheadings ("Caribbean," "North," "South," "Naval," etc.) that alert researchers to pertinent information while allowing for rapid skimming.

The second section, the historical dictionary, consists of alphabetically arranged articles that range from a few paragraphs to a few pages. These entries address people, places, events, and broad topics such as African Americans and Privateering. Every entry concludes with a list of print resources (monographs, periodicals, dissertations, etc.). Additional print sources are listed in a general bibliography that covers Revolutionary War scholarship published between 2000 and 2005.

An extensive appendix of maps details campaigns and individual land and sea battles. Occasional black-and-white illustrations are scattered throughout the dictionary section. These are primarily portraits from national museums and portrait galleries and military institutes. Author Fredriksen indicates in his introduction that the illustrations not only depict individuals normally overlooked in standard treatments but also bring images of some Revolutionary War-era contemporaries together in print for the first time.

This is the inaugural volume of Facts On File's Almanacs of American Wars series. Korean War Almanac is also in print, and future offerings will address the Civil War, the war in Vietnam, and World Wars I and II. The current offering provides a needed update to Revolutionary War research and is recommended for upper-secondary and academic collections and large public libraries.

The Korean War was definitely an unpopular and unwanted war. Author Edwards, who has written numerous books on the Korean War and is the executive director of the Center for the Study of the Korean War at Graceland University, has brought together in one place information on an undeclared war that began and ended more than 50 years ago with only a cease-fire and no declaration of peace.

Chronology entries actually begin with events from 2333 B.C. (founding of the Kingdom of Old Choson) up to the start of hostilities (June 25, 1950). At that point, the chronology becomes day-to-day through July 26, 1953, the date of the cease-fire. Postwar events are then listed through 2005. Brief entries for each day are organized under six subheadings: "Political/Administrative," "Eighth Army," "X Corps," "Sea War," "Air War," and "Partisans." Both Korean and Japanese names are used in cases where the Japanese name is the most common one.

Following the chronology are brief biographies of 128 leaders who had an influence on and role in the war. Further sections offer information on weaponry and participating countries as well as a glossary of terms. Appendixes provide interesting statistical information for both the casual and serious researcher on subjects such as Medal of Honor winners, troop commitments by nation, and aces of the Korean War. The bibliography lists individual works as well as primary collections and Web sites. Black-and-white photographs and maps give the reader a visual reference. The index is extensive, although two terms the reviewer expected to find, MASH andDMZ, are not included. Both are listed in the glossary, but the only way to find them in the main text is by reading entries.

Intended for grades 9 and up, this volume would certainly be an excellent purchase for a high-school or public library. Although it is not an in-depth work, academic libraries might also consider its purchase because of its low cost. kaye talley

In 1990, fellow Arab Gulf states refused to endorse Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's plan to cut production and raise the price of oil, leaving him frustrated and paranoid. Iraq had incurred a mountain of debt during its war with Iran that had lasted for most of the previous decade, and the Iraqi President felt that his Arab brothers were conspiring against him by refusing to raise oil prices. Therefore, after weeks of massing troops along the Iraq-Kuwait border and accusing Kuwait of various crimes, Hussein sent seven divisions of the Iraqi Army into Kuwait in the early morning hours of 2 August 1990. The invasion force of 120,000 troops and 2,000 tanks quickly overwhelmed Iraq's neighbor to the south, allowing Hussein to declare, in less than a week, that Kuwait was his nation's nineteenth province. The United Nations responded quickly, passing a series of resolutions that condemned the invasion, called for an immediate withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait, imposed a financial and trade embargo on Iraq, and declared the annexation void.

Regarding Iraq's actions as a threat to a vital interest of the US, namely the oil production capability of the Persian Gulf region, President George Bush ordered warplanes and ground forces to Saudi Arabia after obtaining King Fahd's approval. Iraqi troops had begun to mass along the Saudi border, breaching it at some points, and indicating the possibility that Hussein's forces would continue south into Saudi Arabia's oil fields. Operation DESERT SHIELD, the US military deployment to first defend Saudi Arabia grew rapidly to become the largest American deployment since the Southeast Asia Conflict. The Gulf region was within US Central Command's (CENTCOM) area of responsibility. Eventually, 30 nations joined the military coalition arrayed against Iraq, with a further 18 countries supplying economic, humanitarian, or other type of assistance.

Carriers in the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea responded, US Air Force interceptors deployed from bases in the United States, and airlift transports carried US Army airborne troopers to Saudi Arabia. Navy prepositioning ships rushed equipment and supplies for an entire marine brigade from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to the gulf. During the next six months the United States and its allies built up a powerful force in the Arabian peninsula. The navy also began maritime intercept operations in support of a US-led blockade and United Nations sanctions against Iraq.

Coalition forces, specifically XVIII Airborne Corps and VII Corps, used deception cells to create the impression that they were going to attack near the Kuwaiti boot heel, as opposed to the “left hook” strategy actually implemented. XVIII Airborne Corps set up “Forward Operating Base Weasel” near the boot heel, consting of a phony network of camps manned by several dozen soldiers. Using portable radio equipment, cued by computers, phony radio messages were passed between fictitious headquarters. In addition, smoke generators and loudspeakers playing tape-recorded tank and truck noises were used, as were inflatable Humvees and helicopters.

On 17 January 1991, when it became clear that Saddam would not withdraw, Desert Shield became Desert Storm.

Legal and public policies concerning youth gun violence tend to rely heavily on crime reports, survey data, and statistical methods. Rarely is attention given to the young voices belonging to those who carry high-powered semiautomatic handguns. In Language of the Gun, Bernard E. Harcourt recounts in-depth interviews with youths detained at an all-malecorrectional facility, exploring how they talk about guns and what meanings they ascribe to them in a broader attempt to understand some of the assumptions implicit in current handgun policies. In the process, Harcourt redraws the relationships among empirical research, law, and public policy.

Home to over 150 repeat offenders ranging in age from twelve to seventeen, the Catalina Mountain School is made up of a particular stratum of boys—those who have committed the most offenses but will still be released upon reaching adulthood. In an effort to understand the symbolic and emotional language of guns and gun carrying, Harcourt interviewed dozens of these incarcerated Catalina boys. What do these youths see in guns? What draws them to handguns? Why do some of them carry and others not? For Harcourt, their often surprising answers unveil many of the presuppositions that influence our laws and policies.

"If you are not criticized, you may not be doing much." - Rumsfeld's Rules

Few Americans have spent more time near the center of power than Donald Rumsfeld. Now he has written an unflinching memoir of his half-century career, sharing previously undisclosed details that will fascinate readers and force historians to rethink many controversies.

Starting from a middle-class childhood in Illinois, Rumsfeld had a rapid rise that won him early acclaim. He shows us what it was like growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, going to Princeton on scholarships, serving as a naval aviator, then getting his first political job on Capitol Hill during the Eisenhower administration. He recalls how he won a seat in the House of Representatives at age thirty and what he experienced as a Republican in Congress during the Kennedy and Johnson years.

We also follow him back to the executive branch as he took on key cabinet positions in the Nixon and Ford administrations, including his service as the youngest-ever secretary of defense, just after the trauma of Vietnam. And we learn about the challenges he later faced as a CEO in the private sector, and during his special assignments for President Reagan, including a face-to-face meeting with Saddam Hussein in 1983.

All of that would have been enough material for a fascinating book. But as 2001 began, Rumsfeld's greatest challenges lay ahead of him. At age sixty-eight he returned to the Pentagon as President Bush's secretary of defense, with a mandate to transform the military for a new century. Just nine months later he would confront the worst acts of terrorism in American history, followed by unexpected wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And he would be on the firing line for many controversies, from the revelations of abuse at Abu Ghraib prison to allegations of torture at Guantánamo Bay.

Known and Unknown reveals what happened behind the scenes during the critical moments of the Bush years, as the President's inner circle debated how best to defend our country. It is based not only on Rumsfeld's memory but also on hundreds of previously unreleased documents from throughout his career. It also features his blunt, firsthand opinions about some of the world's best-known figures, from Margaret Thatcher to Elvis Presley, from Henry Kissinger to Colin Powell, and about each American president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush.

In a famous press briefing, Rumsfeld once remarked that "there are also unknown unknowns . . . things we do not know we don't know." His book makes us realize just how much we didn't know.

Donald Rumsfeld is donating his proceeds from the sales of Known and Unknown to the military charities supported by the Rumsfeld Foundation.

In this collection of illuminating conversations, renowned historian of world religions Huston Smith invites ten influential American Indian spiritual and political leaders to talk about their five-hundred-year struggle for religious freedom. Their intimate, impassioned dialogues yield profound insights into one of the most striking cases of tragic irony in history: the country that prides itself on religious freedom has resolutely denied those same rights to its own indigenous people. With remarkable erudition and curiosity--and respectfully framing his questions in light of the revelation that his discovery of Native American religion helped him round out his views of the world's religions--Smith skillfully helps reveal the depth of the speakers' knowledge and experience. American Indian leaders Vine Deloria, Jr. (Standing Rock Sioux), Winona LaDuke (Anishshinaabeg), Walter Echo-Hawk (Pawnee), Frank Dayish, Jr. (Navajo), Charlotte Black Elk (Oglala Lakota), Douglas George-Kanentiio (Mohawk-Iroquois), Lenny Foster (Dine/Navajo), Tonya Gonnella Frichner (Onondaga), Anthony Guy Lopez (Lakota-Sioux), and Oren Lyons (Onondaga) provide an impressive overview of the critical issues facing the Native American community today. Their ideas about spirituality, politics, relations with the U.S. government, their place in American society, and the continuing vitality of their communities give voice to a population that is all too often ignored in contemporary discourse. The culture they describe is not a relic of the past, nor a historical curiosity, but a living tradition that continues to shape Native American lives.
