This book is another volume in Oxford's Student Companion to American History series, designed for users age 12 and up. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by individuals, concepts, events, groups and organizations, issues, legal cases, publications, social groups, and professions. Cross-references guide the user to additional information. An appendix provides a time line of important dates and events. A second appendix lists museums devoted to women's history. The bibliography lists both print and electronic sources.Articles vary in length and are easy to read. Many articles are accompanied by a photograph. Entries for individuals have brief personal data (dates, education, accomplishments) at the beginning of the article and cross-references and bibliographic citations at the end. Although the author has included women from many different time periods and of varied ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds, some women have been overlooked. The preface notes that the emphasis is on "firsts," but although Sally Ride, the first American woman astronaut is covered, Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space, and Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, are not. Although such omissions are minor, they can be frustrating for the user. Overall, this is a helpful reference tool that will be useful to students needing information about American women and their contributions to U.S. history.

During his eponymous tour, playwright, novelist and "third tallest member of Monty Python" Idle posted a daily Internet diary--"a lap dance across America via laptop"--whose entries he's polished and updated for this book. Taking readers from Vermont to Vegas as he attempts standup for the first time, and writing with wit and honesty, Idle mixes memoir and tales from his tour bus, which is, he says, "like traveling in your own suitcase." With the 80-day expedition through 49 cities neatly niched into 80 chapters, Idle offers a Pythonesque pastiche of goofy observations as he analyzes audiences, dissects his nightly performances and recalls showbiz friendships. He also muses on the passing landscape ("In the chasm of the glacial valley we travel through the deep blue of the morning, staring up at awesome pillars of mountain piled high into mighty citadels"). The travelogue is punctuated with puns and Cockney rhyming slang, but it's not all fun and games. Idle offers a moving account of his mother's death and a harrowing description of a bleeding George Harrison struggling in 1999 against a knife-wielding intruder. 16-page color photo insert not seen by PW.

This book examines the relationship between the White House, in the person of its press secretary, and the press corps through a linguistic analysis of the language used by both sides. A corpus was compiled of around fifty press briefings from the late Clinton years. A wide range of topics are discussed from the Kosovo crisis to the Clinton-Lewinsky affair.
This work is highly original in demonstrating how concordance technology and the detailed linguistic evidence available in corpora can be used to study discourse features of text and the communicative strategies of speakers. It will be of vital interest to all linguists interested in corpus-based linguistics and pragmatics, as well as sociolinguists and students and scholars of communications, politics and the media.

It's everywhere. It's toxic. And it lasts forever. Asbestos? Nuclear waste? No. This statement, made by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2003, refers to a little-known but ubiquitous chemical compound whose trade name is C8. Manufactured by DuPont, it is used in the making of a plethora of stain-resistant consumer products, including microwave popcorn bags, food packaging, nail polish, car finishes, pizza boxes, and many other common items. Recently named a likely carcinogen by the EPA, C8 has been linked to cancer, reproductive disorders, birth defects, and respiratory problems. The first members of the public to hear about C8, in 2002, were the residents of the Mid-Ohio Valley, whose water supplies were found to contain detectable amounts as the result of emissions from the DuPont Washington Works Plant near Parkersburg, West Virginia. As a result, in 2003 the EPA announced it was launching a multi-agency review of the manmade chemical, which became the largest investigation of its kind. The EPA was concerned because early tests indicated that C8 could already—and unexpectedly—be found in the blood of 96 percent of Americans. In 2005 DuPont settled a class action lawsuit with Valley water consumers for more than $200 million, and the EPA has called for a global phase-out of C8 involving eight companies.

As a local journalist, Lyons has covered the C8 issue from the beginning. Here she tells the story of how the danger of C8 first came to light when a West Virginia family lost an entire herd of 280 cattle to a mysterious wasting disease within a mere decade, following forty years of successful farming. The die-off began in the mid-1980s, after the family sold some land to DuPont. The chemical company used the property as a landfill, dumping C8, which made its way into the public water supply. By the time the EPA investigated the situation, the same substance detected in the water in West Virginia and Ohio—which has by now spread to a total of twelve states and counting—could also be found leeching off of thousands of consumer products and into the bloodstreams of millions of people around the world.

Opened on May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge is widely considered the greatest engineering achievement of the 19th century. This vision of designer John Augustus Roebling would be the longest bridge ever built at the time. During the 30-year construction period, the project withstood city politics, numerous construction conundrums and accidents, and the death of Roebling. Standing as a prime example of American technological and architectural progress, this iconic suspension bridge remains one of the world's most recognized structures. Built to link Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge remains the most popular bridge in New York, open to pedestrians and motorists alike. Today, more than 160,000 people cross the bridge every day.

The Hoover Dam is recognized as one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world. The construction of this behemoth dam - the inspiration of one Arthur Powell Davis - was an incredible feat on many levels. Years-long political disputes had to be settled. Individuals and companies in the engineering and construction realms had to bond together to form a single company capable of taking on such a groundbreaking project. Thousands of workers from around the country flocked to the project to flee the poverty of the Great Depression. Roads, houses, and electricity had to be built and installed in the untouched environment of Black Canyon. Then, with almost unbelievable speed, the Hoover Dam rose from the dry dust of the western United States to become one of the most incredible engineering accomplishments in history.

Teeming with a population of 3.5 million at the end of the 19th century, the island of Manhattan couldn't meet the city's demand for rapid transit with its horse-drawn trolleys and elevated train lines. New York City needed a subway system. After four years of digging and diverting miles of utilities and tunneling under the Harlem River, the city's residents celebrated a new era in mass transit on October 27, 1904, with the opening of a nine-mile subway route. In the century to come, the New York subway would grow and expand to a system that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with 6,400 cars, 468 stations, a daily ridership of 4.5 million, and 842 miles of track - longer than the distance from New York to Chicago. Politics, graffiti, and unbelievable construction challenges combined to make the building and running of the New York subway system one of the America's greatest civic undertakings.

Alexander Graham Bell's request for his assistant to 'come here' revolutionized the way America's citizens communicated with one another. Bell's seemingly humble but transformative invention, the telephone remains a crucial part of daily life and is used by billions of people worldwide every day. With the far-reaching network it spawned, it drew out its most isolated citizens and gathered the populace into a simultaneously intimate and national conversation. A nation of remote farmhouses, suburban families, and city dwellers could now be connected to each other over great distances. The telephone's integration into society now makes it impossible to imagine the technological and social achievements of the 20th century without it.

In the wake of the Great Depression, two wars, and at the dawn of the cold war, President Dwight D. Eisenhower viewed a 'national road' system as vital to the nation's interest on several counts: defense, commerce, safety, and unity. The Interstate Highway Act of 1956 created the vast network of superhighways, beltlines, and spurs of the modern-day highway system. More than 40,000 miles bound the 50 states together as an interconnected whole. The Interstate Highway System is an enduring marvel of conception, design, and construction. The undertaking became the largest public works program in American history, and its creation showcased the can-do American spirit of ambition, intelligence, and know-how.

New York City's Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with more than 25 million visitors each year. Designed in 1857 by the man who would become America's most famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, and his partner, Calvert Vaux, Central Park was intended to provide New Yorkers with a serene and scenic 'rural' refuge from the noise and bustle of city life. Yet transforming the rocky, swampy park site into the rolling meadows, lush woodlands, and pristine lakes would prove an extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive endeavor. Thousands of workers drained marshes, blasted away boulders, and planted a quarter billion trees, flowers, and shrubs to create the 843-acre green oasis envisioned by Olmsted and Vaux in the heart of Manhattan.
