Mark P Jelonek - Toward an Air and Space Force, Na val Aviation and the Implications for Space Power (1999).jpg

The challenge of transforming the US Air Force into a truly integrated aerospace force is a pressing issue for our service. In Toward an Air and Space Force: Naval Aviation and the Implications for Space Power, Lt Col Mark P. Jelonek uses the historical analogy of the US Navy’s integration of aviation dur ing the interwar period as a possible model for the comprehensive integration of space into the operational Air Force. Defining integration as “the evolutionary process by which a new technology (aviation in the Navy and space power in the Air Force) becomes an inseparable part of the military service,” Colonel Jelonek describes the various policies pursued by the sea service to integrate aviation into the fleet. He contends that five policies proved indispensable to that process:
(1) promoting broad understanding of aviation within the naval establishment;
(2) demonstrating that aviation enhanced rather than threatened the battleship’s place as the premier naval weapons system of the day;
(3) creating a career path that allowed aviators to attain senior rank;
(4) ensuring that aviators remained fully conversant with surface operations; and
(5) incorporating aviation into naval war games.
Arguing that similar practices could facilitate metamorphosis of the Air Force into a true air and space force, Jelonek employs the integration policies pursued by the interwar Navy (appropriately rephrased for contemporary airmen) as a device for measuring the Air Force’s progress in integrating space into its own operational mainstream. He finds such progress has been uneven at best and cites as major impediments the lack of an official plan for air-space integration, the suspect (to aviators) operational credibility of many space officers, and an institutional tendency to mistake technological adaptation for organizational transformation. The author’s proposals for over - coming these difficulties and for promoting the full integration of space power—and space power practitioners—merit serious reflection.

Ronald J. Pestritto - Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism (2005).jpg

Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism highlights Wilson's sharp departure from the traditional principles of American government, most notably the Constitution. Ronald J. Pestritto persuasively argues that Wilson's unfailing criticism places him clearly in line with the Progressives' assault on the originalprinciples of American constitutionalism. Drawing primarily from early writings and speeches that Wilson made during his years as a scholar, Pestritto examines the future president's clear and consistent ideologies that laid the foundation for later actions taken as a public leader.

Jane Latour - Sisters in the Brotherhoods, Working Women Organizing for Equality in New York City (2 008).jpg

Sisters in the Brotherhoods is an oral-history-based study of women who have, against considerable odds, broken the gender barrier to blue-collar employment in various trades in New York City beginning in the 1970s. It is a story of the fight against deeply ingrained cultural assumptions about what constitutes women's work, the middle-class bias of feminism, the daily grinding sexism of male coworkers, and the institutionalized discrimination of employers and unions. It is also the story of some gutsy women who, seeking the material rewards and personal satisfactions of skilled manual labor, have struggled to make a place for themselves amongNew York City's construction workers, stationary engineers, firefighters, electronic technicians, plumbers, and transit workers. Each story contributes to an important unifying theme: the way women confronted the enormous sexism embedded in union culture and developed new organizational forms to support their struggles, including and especially the United Tradeswomen.

Beth Boosalis Davies - Mayor Helen Boosalis, My Mo ther's Life in Politics (2008).jpg

As a 1950s housewife and League of Women Voters volunteer who spearheaded the city of Lincoln s switch to a strong mayor form of government, Helen Boosalis never anticipated that she herself would one day be that strong mayor and chief executive of Nebraska s capital city. Helen Boosalis s story, told by her daughter, Beth Boosalis Davis, is the story of a true pioneer of women in politics. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Boosalis achieved national prominence as the first woman president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and as an outspoken advocate for economically distressed cities facing President Reagan s new federalism. Winning the Democratic nomination for governor of Nebraska in 1986,Helen Boosalis ran against Kay Orr in the first gubernatorial contest between two women in U.S. history. The interwoven tales of conflict and challenge, from the mayor s office to the campaign trail, combine personal insight into one woman s trailblazing political history with a compelling memoir of a half century of public service and private devotion shared by two remarkable women.

Richard J. Beamish, Brian J. Rothschild - The Futu re of Fisheries Science in North America (2009).jpg

Fisheries science in North America is changing in response to a changing climate, new technologies, an ecosystem approach to management and new thinking about the processes affecting stock and recruitment.

Authors of the 34 chapters review the science in their particular fields and use their experience to develop informed opinions about the future. Everyone associated with fish, fisheries and fisheries management will find material that will stimulate their thinking about the future. Readers will be impressed with the potential for new discoveries, but disturbed by how much needs to be done in fisheries science if we are to sustain North American fisheries in our changing climate. Officials that manage or fund fisheries science will appreciate the urgency for the new information needed for the stewardship of fish populations and their ecosystems. Research organizations may want to keep some extra copies for a future look back into the thoughts of a wide range of fisheries professionals. Fisheries science has been full of surprises with some of the surprises having major economic impacts. It is important to minimize these impacts as the demand for seafood increases and the complexities of fisheries management increase.

Earl L. Grinols, James W. Henderson - Health Care for Us All, Getting More for Our Investment (2009).jpg

Health Care for Us All challenges the common belief that health care problems in the United States are difficult and possibly insoluble. Americans want to get more for their health care spending, including insurance coverage for all that is personal, portable, and permanent. They want a system that respects incentives for quality care, exhibits a responsible approach to the budget, and is sustainable. Health Care for Us All adopts these five objectives and applies an efficiency filter to identify the virtually unique framework that meets all objectives. Impediments to achieving Americans' goals can be summarized under the rubrics of too little insurance, too little income, and too little properly functioning market. The efficient remedy for each is the subject of the book. Related philosophical as well as economic issues, such as why there should be government involvement in health care, are analyzed.

Manuel Hinds - Playing Monopoly with the Devil, Do llarization and Domestic Currencies in Developing Countries (2006).jpg

01 - USA2 - Manuel Hinds - Playing Monopoly with the Devil, Dollar... and Domestic Currencies in Developing Countries 2006.jpg

Why should a developing country surrender its power to create money by adopting an international currency as its own? This comprehensive book explores the currency problems that developing countries face and offers sound, practical advice for policy makers on how to deal with them. Manuel Hinds, who has extensive experience in real-world economic policy making, challenges the myths that surround domestic currencies and shows the clear rationality for dollarization or the use of a standard international currency.
The book opens with an entertaining story of the Devil, who, through a series of common macroeconomic maneuvers, coaches the president of a mythical country into financial ruin. This ruler’s path is not unlike that taken in several real developing countries, to their detriment. Hinds goes on to introduce new ways of thinking about financial systems and monetary behavior in Third World countries.

A.P. Thirlwall - Trade Liberalisation And The Pove rty Of Nations (2008).jpg

This book breaks out of the standard distinction between "free trade" and "protectionism", and shows how to think constructively about trade policy as an instrument of national economic strategy. It is highly recommended for those who wish to think beyond orthodoxy, and especially for those in developing countries who wish to influence negotiations with developed countries and western-based international organisations.'
- Robert Wade, London School of Economics, UK
`This is a gem of a book. Based on deep understanding of diverse economic theories and empirical evidence, it offers us a succinct but highly informative overview of the controversies surrounding the impact of trade policy on growth, inequality, and macroeconomics.'
- Ha-Joon Chang, University of Cambridge, UK, and Author of Kicking Away the Ladder, and Bad Samaritans

`Free-trade fundamentalism is gradually making way for a more nuanced and historically well-informed understanding of the role that trade policy plays in economic development. Thirlwall and Pacheco-López provide an excellent review of the relevant literature as well as a sophisticated critique of the earlier, simplistic views. As they explain, it is the details - the timing, sequencing, and context - that determine whether liberalization will succeed.'
- Dani Rodrik, Harvard University, US

`This book will infuriate the free trade ultras who believe that liberalisation is the answer to every problem - and a good thing too. The real world, as Thirlwall and Pacheco-López show clearly and vividly, is different from the world of theoretical models so beloved by today's economic orthodoxy, and they take delight in tweaking the noses of the Washington consensus. History suggests they are right to argue that managed trade is better for developing countries than swallowing large doses of free-trade medicine.'
- Larry Elliott, The Guardian

Orthodox trade and growth theory, and the world's multilateral development institutions, extol the virtues of trade liberalisation and free trade for more rapid economic development of poor countries. However, the contemporary reality and history seem to tell a different story. The world economy has experienced an unprecedented period of trade liberalisation in the last thirty years, and yet international and global inequality is widening; domestic poverty (outside of China) is increasing; poor countries' exports have grown more slowly than their imports leading to balance of payments crises, and the so-called globalising economies of the world (excluding China and India) have fared no better, and in some cases worse, than those countries that have not liberalised so extensively. This book argues that orthodox theory is based on many unreal assumptions, and that there are sound economic arguments for selective protection of industrial activities in the early stages of economic development. The historical evidence of the now-developed countries also illustrates this fact.

01 - USA2 - John Curl - For All the People, Uncovering the Hidden ...ooperative Movements, and Communalism in America 2009.jpg

Seeking to reclaim a history that has remained largely ignored by most historians, this dramatic and stirring account examines each of the definitive American cooperative movements for social change—farmer, union, consumer, and communalist—that have been all but erased from collective memory. Focusing far beyond one particular era, organization, leader, or form of cooperation, the expansive analysis documents the multigenerational struggle of the American working people for social justice. With an expansive sweep and breathtaking detail, the chronicle considers Native American times and follows the American worker from the colonial workshop to the modern mass-assembly line, ultimately painting a vivid panorama of those who built the United States and those who will shape its future.

Mark Rudd - Underground, My Life with SDS and the Weatherme (2009).jpg

The leader of the student uprising of 1968 and founding member of the notorious Weather Underground tells his story—for the first time
In 1968, Mark Rudd led the legendary occupation of five buildings at Columbia University, a dramatic act of protest against the university's support for the Vietnam War and its institutional racism. Rudd was the charismatic chairman of the Columbia chapter of SDS, Students for a Democratic Society, the largest radical student organization in the United States. After a violent police bust, the Columbia occupation turned into a student strike that closed down the entire campus, turning Rudd into a national symbol of student revolt. Rudd went on to become the cofounder of the Weatherman faction of SDS, which took control of the student organization and helped organize the notorious Days of Rage in Chicago in 1969.
But Mark Rudd wanted revolution.
Rudd and his friends sought to end war, racism, and injustice—by any means necessary, even violence. After a tragic turn that led to the death of three people, who were killed when the bombs they were making in a Greenwich Village town house exploded, they transformed themselves into the Weather Underground Organization. By the end of 1970, after a string of nonlethal bombings by the organization, Rudd, now one of the FBI's Most Wanted, went into hiding for more than seven years before turning himself in to great media fanfare.
In this gripping narrative, Rudd speaks out about this tumultuous period, the role he played in its crucial events, and its aftermath, revealing the drama and tension, as well as the naïveté of young activists, fighting in the name of peace and social justice, who believed that their actions mattered.
"I've spoken and answered questions at scores of colleges, high schools, community centers, and theaters about why my friends and I opted for violent revolution, and how I've changed my thinking and how I haven't, and most of all, about the parallels between then and now," Rudd writes. Powerful and shocking, Underground sheds new light on this controversial time, which still haunts the nation.

T.V. Paul - The Tradition of Non-Use of Nuclear We apons (2009).jpg

Since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks, no state has unleashed nuclear weapons. What explains this? According to the author, the answer lies in a prohibition inherent in the tradition of non-use, a time-honored obligation that has been adhered to by all nuclear states—thanks to a consensus view that use would have a catastrophic impact on humankind, the environment, and the reputation of the user.

The book offers an in-depth analysis of the nuclear policies of the U.S., Russia, China, the UK, France, India, Israel, and Pakistan and assesses the contributions of these states to the rise and persistence of the tradition of nuclear non-use. It examines the influence of the tradition on the behavior of nuclear and non-nuclear states in crises and wars, and explores the tradition's implications for nuclear non-proliferation regimes, deterrence theory, and policy. And it concludes by discussing the future of the tradition in the current global security environment.

Allen C. Guelzo - Abraham Lincoln as a Man of Idea s (2009).jpg

This title offers a look into the mind of Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was a skilled politician, an inspirational leader, and a man of humor and pathos. What many may not realize is how much he was also a man of ideas. Despite the most meager of formal educations, Lincoln's tremendous intellectual curiosity drove him into the circle of Enlightenment philosophy and democratic political ideology. And from these, Lincoln developed a set of political convictions that guided him throughout his life and his presidency. "Abraham Lincoln as a Man of Ideas", a compilation of ten essays from Lincoln scholar Allen C. Guelzo uncovers the sources of Lincoln's ideas and examines the beliefs that directed his career and brought an end to slavery and the Civil War. These essays reveal Lincoln to be a man of impressive intellectual probity and depth as well as a man of great contradictions. He was an apostle of freedom who did not believe in human free will; a champion of the Constitution who had to step outside of it in order to save it; a man of many acquaintances and admirers, but few friends; a man who opposed slavery but also opposed the abolition of it; and, a man of prudence who took more political risks than any other president. Guelzo explores the many facets of Lincoln's ideas, and especially the influence of the Founding Fathers and the great European champions of democracy. And he links the sixteenth president's struggles with the issues of race, emancipation, religion, and civil liberties to the challenges these issues continue to offer to Americans today. Lincoln played many roles in his life - lawyer, politician, president - but in each he was driven by a core of values, convictions, and beliefs about economics, society, and democracy. "Abraham Lincoln as a Man of Ideas" is a broad and exciting survey of the ideas that made Lincoln great, just as we celebrate the bicentennial his birth.

Michael Allaby - Tornadoes, Revised Edition (2004).jpg

By far the most vehement storm known on Earth, the tornado has an average life span of no more than half an hour. Yet, during that time, it will expend about as much energy as is used to light the streets of New York City for one night. This updated and revised volume in the Dangerous Weather series explores tornadoes.
Organized and written in an easy-to-follow style, author Michael Allaby answers the most important questions students and non-specialists have about tornadoes and he provides a general overview of the current information that shapes the way tornadoes are understood and studied. Featured coverage includes a definition of tornado; discussion about what happens when warm and cold air collide and how wind changes with height; explanations of jet streams, squall lines, thunderstorms, supercells, vortices and angular momentum, dust devils, and waterspouts; answers to questions such as how does a tornado begin, what happens inside a tornado, how does a tornado travel, and how does a tornado die; and a look at when and where tornadoes happen, Tornado Alley, tornadoes in Europe, and tornadoes of the past.

Pearson - Longman Dictionary of American English, Special Edition (2009).jpg

The 4th edition of the Longman Dictionary of American English has been researched
and revised to meet the real needs of learners of English. The up-dated text now includes
thousands of words for content areas such as Science, Economics and Social Science, as
well as Word Origins and updated thesaurus boxes that give extra help with vocabulary
acquisition.
Real Language
All Longman dictionaries are based on the authentic language data in the Longman Corpus
Network. This unique computerized language database now contains over 400 million
words from all types of written texts, and from real conversations recorded across the US.
The Corpus tells us how frequently words and phrases are used, so there is no guesswork in
deciding which ones students need to know most. The Corpus also shows which grammar
patterns are the most important to illustrate, which important new words and idioms people
use every day, and which words are frequently used together (collocations). We take our
example sentences from the Corpus, and this makes the language come alive as never before.
Real Clarity
The definitions in Longman dictionaries are written using only the 2,000 most common
English words – the Longman American Defining Vocabulary. Longman pioneered the
use of a limited vocabulary as the best way to guarantee that definitions are clear and easy
to understand. The meaning you want is easy to find. Words that have a large number of
meanings have short, clear signposts to guide you to the right meaning quickly.
The comprehensive grammatical information is easy to understand and use. Important
patterns are highlighted in the example sentences, so that you can see at a glance how to
use a word in a sentence.
Real Help
The 4th edition of the Longman Dictionary of American English is the result of extensive
research into learners needs and abilities. Thesaurus boxes explain thousands of synonyms
and antonyms to help users expand their vocabulary, so that instead of using the same
words all the time, such as the word angry, for example, they learn how to use related words
such as annoyed, irritated, furious, etc. Additional Thesaurus boxes now also help learners
expand their academic and content vocabulary.
The writers have also used their knowledge from years of teaching to analyze the Longman
Learner’s Corpus, which is a computerized collection of over 8 million words of writing in
English by learners. By studying the errors students make in essays and exams, the writers
were able to give clear, helpful usage information throughout the dictionary – in the
definitions, example sentences, and usage notes – to help students avoid common errors.
The grammar codes and labels are inside the front cover, and the IPA (International
Phonetic Alphabet) pronunciation charts are inside the back cover, so they are always
easy to find and use.
Whether you are writing an essay, sending an e-mail, or talking with friends, the Longman
Dictionary of American English will help you choose the right words, understand them
clearly, and use them correctly.
