In 1987 ethnohistorian James Axtell published the article “Colonial America without the Indians: Counterfactual Reflections,” in which he imagined a North America bereft of humans at the time of European exploration and settlement. The purpose of his piece was to demonstrate how vital the Native peoples of the continent had been to the history and development of the United States. Axtell’s imaginative contention could also be extended to an exploration of the relationship between the story of U.S. Indian policy and the general history of the United States.That history is not only important in its own right; it is also interwoven with the political, economic, legal, cultural, and social histories of the United States—which would have developed in other ways.
The United States would be a very different nation today if its government had not had the responsibility of dealing with the tribal nations. Some might see the history of the relations between the United States and American Indians as a long tragedy in which the former subjugated, dispossessed, and annihilated the culture of the latter. Concomitant with this U.S. assault on Native land holdings, political rights, and culture, however, is a story of triumphant persistence. Despite more than
two centuries of attacks on their political, territorial, and cultural integrity, the Native peoples of the United States have survived, endured, and, in some cases, returned to prosperity. Tin Pan Alley was a nickname given to an actual street in Manhattan (West Twenty-eighth Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue) where many of the music publishers had their offices. Eventually, Tin Pan Alley became the generic term for publishers of popular American sheet music. These publishing businesses hired lyricists and composers to create popular songs and promoted these songs in their sheet-music form with attractive covers.

A color map of the Manhattan subway system greets you as you open Memorable Walks in New York, right inside the front cover, setting the tone of convenient, accessible information. It's a very good start. The rest of the book follows suit with 10 walking tours, taking in Chinatown, the Lower East Side, SoHo, the Village, Central Park, the Financial District, Lower Manhattan, and the Upper East and West Sides. Each tour provides subway-route starting points; a time estimate (generally three to five hours, not including restaurant stops); an excellent map of each neighborhood and its notable sites; plus a word of advice on the best times to be (or not to be) walking there. Then there's each walking-tour narrative, pointing out historic landmarks and events, and providing detailed route instructions for 20 to 50 notable sites. For the Chinatown tour, for example, 27 points of interest are listed on the itinerary, including vegetable sellers on Baxter Street, the Manhattan Bridge (built in 1905), Confucius Plaza (first major public-funded housing project built for Chinese use), and Bloody Angle, where two Chinatown gangs engaged in fierce turf warfare. There's a profile of dim sum, a selection of Chinese restaurants suitable for lunch breaks, the Ming Fay Book Store, the Chinatown History Museum, and Columbus Park. The tour ends on Rutgers Street near the East Broadway F-line subway entrance, a location you can find easily enough on that front-page subway map.

Jamestown and Plymouth serve as iconic images of British migration to the New World. A century later, however, when British migration was at its peak, the vast majority of men, women, and children crisscrossing the Atlantic on English ships were of African, not English, descent. Captives and Voyagers, a compelling study from Alexander X. Byrd, traces the departures, voyages, and landings of enslaved and free blacks who left their homelands in the eighteenth century for British colonies and examines how displacement and resettlement shaped migrant society and, in turn, Britain's Atlantic empire.
Captives and Voyagersbreaks away from the conventional image of transatlantic migration and illustrates how black men and women, enslaved and free, came to populate the edges of an Anglo-Atlantic world. Whether as settlers in Sierra Leone or as slaves in Jamaica, these migrants brought a deep and affecting experience of being in motion to their new homelands, and as they became firmly ensconced in the particulars of their new local circumstances they both shaped and were themselves molded by the demands of the British Atlantic world, of which they were an essential part.
Byrd focuses on the two largest and most significant streams of black dislocation: the forced immigration of Africans from the Biafran interior of present-day southeastern Nigeria to Jamaica as part of the British slave trade and the emigration of free blacks from Great Britain and British North America to Sierra Leone in West Africa. By paying particular attention to the social and cultural effects of transatlantic migration on the groups themselves and focusing as well on their place in the British Empire, Byrd illuminates the meaning and experience of slavery and liberty for people whose journeys were similarly beset by extreme violence and catastrophe.
By following the movement of this representative population, Captives and Voyagers pres a vitally important view of the British colonial world--its intersection with the African diaspora.

Waters wrote this book with assistance from thirty-two Hopi elders back in 1963. Much time has passed since then, and while the way of the Hopi remains mostly unchanged, access to their sacred ceremonies and rituals has been greatly reduced in the last several decades. While BOOK OF THE HOPI was written through the eyes and ears of an outsider, it contains much of the spirit of the Hopi, and countless fascinating insights.

Is race something we know when we see it? In 1857, Alexina Morrison, a slave in Louisiana, ran away from her master and surrendered herself to the parish jail for protection. Blue-eyed and blond, Morrison successfully convinced white society that she was one of them. When she sued for her freedom, witnesses assured the jury that she was white, and that they would have known if she had a drop of African blood. Morrison’s court trial—and many others over the last 150 years—involved high stakes: freedom, property, and civil rights. And they all turned on the question of racial identity.
Over the past two centuries, individuals and groups (among them Mexican Americans, Indians, Asian immigrants, and Melungeons) have fought to establish their whiteness in order to lay claim to full citizenship in local courtrooms, administrative and legislative hearings, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Like Morrison’s case, these trials have often turned less on legal definitions of race as percentages of blood or ancestry than on the way people presented themselves to society and demonstrated their moral and civic character.
Unearthing the legal history of racial identity, Ariela Gross’s book examines the paradoxical and often circular relationship of race and the perceived capacity for citizenship in American society. This book reminds us that the imaginary connection between racial identity and fitness for citizenship remains potent today and continues to impede racial justice and equality.

Why is there mostly silence from this important profession while debates about school testing rage on?
