Una pareja de brillantes universitarios, Brandon (John Dall) y Phillip (Farley Granger), estrangulan a un amigo de la facultad, David Kentley (Dick Hogan), con el fin de demostrar su superioridad, estimulados por las teorías de su profesor favorito, Rupert Cadell (James Stewart). Esconden el cadáver en un arcón sobre el que más adelante se servirá una cena a la que están invitados el padre del muchacho asesinado (Sir Cedric Hardwicke); la madre del muchacho, que no acude y en su lugar asiste su tía, la señora Atwater (Constance Collier); su novia Janet (Joan Chandler); el mejor amigo de David, Kenneth (Douglas Dick); y el profesor Rupert Cadell. Jedyny świadek przestępstwa widział generalski lampas na spodniach wychodzącego od dziewczyny mężczyzny. Prowadzący wówczas dochodzenie major Grau podejrzewał, że sprawcą mordu jest jeden z urzędujących w Warszawie hitlerowskich generałów. Podczas prowadzonego śledztwa ginie. Po latach Morand, dawny współpracownik Graua, chce odnaleźć winnych obu zabójstw.

In 1942, in Warsaw, a Polish prostitute is murdered in a sadistic way. Major Grau, a man from German Intelligence that believes in justice, is in charge of the investigation. An eyewitness saw a German general leaving the building after a scream of the victim. A further investigation shows that three generals do not have any alibi for that night: General Tanz, Maj. Gen. Klus Kahlenberge and General von Seidlitz-Gabler. They three avoid a direct contact with Major Grau and become potential suspects. As far as Major Grau gets close to them, he is promoted and sent to Paris. In 1944, in Paris, this quartet is reunited and Major Grau continues his investigation. Meanwhile, a plan for killing Hitler is plotted by his high command; a romance between Ulrike von Seydlitz-Gabler and Lance Cpl. Kurt Hartmann is happening and Insp. Morand is helping Major Grau in his investigation. The story ends in 1965, in Hamburg, with another similar crime.

1942 wird in Warschau eine Prostituierte ermordet. Der Abwehr-Offizier Grau (Omar Sharif) übernimmt die Ermittlungen, da ein Zeuge einen deutschen General aus dem Zimmer des Opfers kommen sah. Die Indizien, die Grau zusammenträgt, belasten drei hohe Offiziere: General von Seydlitz-Gabler (Charles Gray), Generalmajor Kahlenberg (Donald Pleasence) und Generalleutnant Tanz (Peter O'Toole). Da alle drei etwas zu verbergen haben - nämlich den Mord, ein außereheliches Liebesverhältnis und die Mitarbeit an einem Umsturzplan -, sorgen die Generale dafür, dass Grau von dem Fall abgezogen und nach Paris "weggelobt" wird.Der Fall bleibt unter Verschluss, bis 1944 auch die drei Generale nach Paris beordert werden. Dort werden Pläne zur Beseitigung Adolf Hitlers geschmiedet. Kahlenberg gehört zu den Verschwörern, während Seydlitz-Gabler unschlüssig ist. Tanz, der nichts von den Plänen weiß, ist dem Nazi-Führer gegenüber loyal. Der Gefreite Hartmann (Tom Courtenay), Ordonnanz von General Tanz, wird zum Augenzeugen an einem zweiten Mord an einer Prostituierten in Paris. Der Mörder ist Tanz. Tanz fordert Hartmann auf, zu desertieren, da sein Wort gegen das des Generals nichts zählen würde. Grau untersucht den Mord und erkennt, dass er in der gleichen Art und Weise wie der Mord in Warschau begangen wurde. Er nimmt seine Ermittlungen wieder auf und identifiziert Tanz als den Mörder. Bevor Grau den Mörder verhaften kann, kommt der 20. Juli 1944, das Attentat auf Hitler. Kurz danach konfrontiert Grau Tanz mit den Beweisen. Tanz tötet den Ermittler und stellt ihn als einen der Attentäter hin.

Varsovie, 12 décembre 1942. Une prostituée vient d'être sauvagement assassinée. Selon un témoin, le meurtrier serait un général de la Wehrmacht. L'enquête est confiée au major Grau. Ce dernier ne tarde pas à suspecter trois hommes : le général Kahlenberg, le général Seidlitz-Gabler et le général Tanz, un homme parfois sujet à des pulsions maniaques, mais également un héros, le général favori d'Hitler. Durant une soirée organisée par la femme du général Gabler, sa fille Ulrike est présentée à Tanz, en vue de favoriser leur mariage. Mais celle-ci tombe dans les bras de Hartmann, un caporal revenant du front russe affecté auprès de Kahlenberg.Le major Grau est promu lieutenant-colonel à Paris, et transféré sur le champ : ordre signé par Gabler sur demande de Kahlenberg. Le 17 juillet 1944, à Paris, les trois généraux sont à nouveau dans la même ville. Grau n'a pas oublié Varsovie, et se rappelle à la mémoire de ces hommes. Kahlenberg est passé dans le camp des conspirateurs du 20 juillet, Gabler le soutient moralement. Ulrike doit arriver à Paris, mais Hartmann (qui ne l'a pas vue depuis 1942) a été chargé par Kahlenberg de conduire Tanz visiter Paris pour la journée, afin de l'occuper jusqu'au 20.Grau fait une visite chez l'inspecteur Morand, de la police française, afin d'avoir plus de renseignements sur ses trois suspects. En échange, il fera sortir trois résistants de prison. Le cousin de Hartmann prend Ulrike en charge, et l'amène à l'hôtel où Hartmann et Tanz passeront la nuit. Durant ce temps, Kahlenberg assiste à un déjeuner chez le général von Stülpnagel, en présence des autres conjurés. Von Stülpnagel leur annonce le ralliement à leur complot du maréchal Rommel, actuellement sur le front normand. Celui-ci est blessé en revenant du front, et tombe dans le coma.

La sera in cui Tanz arriva in città viene barbaramente uccisa una prostituta e un testimone è riuscito solo ad intravedere i pantaloni dell'uomo che stava uscendo dal palazzo e trattasi di pantaloni da generale tedesco; la donna era un'informatrice dei tedeschi e per questo motivo viene incaricato delle indagini il maggiore Grau: una breve indagine presso l'autoparco del comando della Wehrmacht rivela al maggiore che la sera prima solo tre generali avevano usato l'auto per motivi non di servizio e senza dare notizie su dove avessero passato la notte: il generale von Seidlitz-Gabler, il suo capo di stato maggiore, generale Kahlenberge, e il generale Tanz e, secondo Grau, tra essi dovrebbe trovarsi l'omicida.

Jeff Bailey führt eine Tankstelle in Bridgeport, Kalifornien, und ist liiert mit der Einheimischen Ann Miller. Als der zwielichtige Joe Stephanos ihn in Bridgeport aufspürt, holt ihn seine Vergangenheit ein. Er erzählt Ann seine Vorgeschichte, die in einer Rückblende aufgerollt wird.Bailey heißt in Wirklichkeit Jeff Markham, mit seinem Partner Jack Fisher leitete er eine Privatdetektivkanzlei in New York. Der Gangsterboss Whit Sterling engagierte ihn, um seine entlaufene Freundin Kathie wiederzufinden. Sie hatte auf Sterling geschossen und ihm 40.000 US-Dollar entwendet. Die Spur führte Jeff ins mexikanische Acapulco, wo es ihm tatsächlich gelang, Kathie aufzuspüren. Er verliebte sich in die junge Frau; die beiden beschlossen, zusammenzubleiben und kehrten gemeinsam in die USA zurück. In San Francisco begannen sie ein neues Leben. Hier fand sie eines Tages Jeffs ehemaliger Partner Fisher, der sich um die entgangene Prämie betrogen fühlte. Es kam zu einer Prügelei zwischen den beiden Männern, in deren Verlauf Kathie Fisher erschoss. Jeff erkannte nun das wahre Gesicht seiner Freundin, die anschließend floh, während er in Bridgeport untertauchte.

Un exdetectiu retirat, amb el fals nom de Jeff Bailey, regenta una gasolinera en un petit poble, on porta una vida tranquil·la i senzilla. Els seus amors són la pesca i una joveneta amb la que vol casar-se. Inesperadament, rep la visita d'un vell conegut que li anuncia que Whit Sterling, un cap de l'hampa, vol veure'l. Llavors Bailey es veu obligat a explicar a la seva xicota el seu tèrbol passat: contractat per Whit Sterling per buscar la seva amant, Kathie Moffett, que s'havia escapat amb una substanciosa suma de diners, va aconseguir trobar-la a Acapulco i es va enamorar d'ella. Per fugir de Sterling, els amants se'n van anar a viure a San Francisco; però la dona va tornar a fugir, després de donar mort a un antic soci de Bailey que havia descobert el seu parador. Jeff Bailey è gestore di una stazione di servizio a Bridgeport, una piccola città di provincia dove vive tranquillo dividendosi tra il lavoro e la pesca sul fiume. Jeff frequenta una ragazza, Ann, la cui famiglia è però contraria alla loro relazione; Ann è oggetto di attenzioni anche da parte di Jim, l’aiutante dello sceriffo. Un giorno Jeff riceve la visita inaspettata di Joe Stephanos, sgherro del gangster Whit Sterling per il quale lui aveva già lavorato tre anni prima. Sterling vuole rivederlo per affidargli un altro incarico e l’uomo, pur riluttante, lo raggiunge nella sua villa facendosi accompagnare da Ann. Mentre sono in viaggio, Jeff rivela il proprio torbido passato alla ragazza. Il suo vero nome è Jeff Markham e tre anni prima lui e il suo socio Jack Fisher erano investigatori privati a New York. Sterling lo aveva contattato perché ritrovasse la sua amante, Kathie Moffat, scomparsa alcuni giorni prima dopo avergli sottratto quarantamila dollari e sparato quattro colpi di pistola. Jeff teme che Sterling rivoglia la donna soltanto per vendicarsi di lei e non vorrebbe accettare il lavoro; ma poi, convinto che Sterling non l’ucciderà (e ricevuto un cospicuo anticipo in denaro contante), decide di partire da solo in cerca di Kathie. La ritrova ad Acapulco e si innamora di lei, che sembra ricambiarlo teneramente. Quando i due hanno ormai deciso di fuggire assieme, Whit Sterling e Joe Stephanos, diretti a Città del Messico, raggiungono Jeff per sapere come stiano andando le cose; il detective dice loro di non aver ancora trovato la donna ma presume abbia proseguito per il Sud. Jeff e Kathie salgono allora su un piroscafo e vanno a vivere a San Francisco, dove però arriva anche Jack Fisher, il vecchio socio di Jeff, che ora li ricatta minacciando di rivelare tutto a Sterling.
