M. Kolbl-Ebert - Geology and Religion, A History o f Harmony and Hostility (2009).jpg

For thousands of years, religious ideas have shaped the thoughts and deeds of human beings, and therefore many early geological concepts were initially developed in this context. The book discusses this long-standing relationship from a historical point of view, which in the past has been sometimes indifferent, sometimes fruitful and sometimes full of conflict. The relationship continues well into the present. While Christian fundamentalists attack evolution and related palaeontological findings as well as the geological evidence of the age of the Earth, mainstream theologians strive for a fruitful dialogue between science and religion. Much of what is written and discussed today can only be understood, when the historical perspective is added.

Marilyn Stockstad - Medieval Castles (2005).jpg

"Stokstad, the author of a well- regarded history of medieval art, has written an account that describes all aspects of medieval castles, with many specific examples and a rich collection of primary sources. Written for high school students and the general reader, the text provides a nuanced look at castles, with attention to their architecture, methods of fortification, methods of warfare, functions besides defense, inhabitants, their fate after the invention of gunpowder, and the romantic attachment to their architecture from the 18th century to the present. This volume focuses mainly on examples in England and France; it is supplemented nicely by examples in another book in this series, also written by a senior scholar, that focuses on the Crusades."

Michael D. Bailey - Historical Dictionary of Witch craft (2003).jpg

A great deal has been written about the history of witchcraft, but much of what has been written is unreliable, exaggerated, or inaccurate. This problem is especially acute in regard to modern witchcraft, or Wicca, and its supposed connections to historical witchcraft in medieval and early modern Europe. This Dictionary provides a reliable reference source for both academics and general readers interested in the actual historical development of witchcraft in the western world. The focus of the dictionary is on Western Europe during the late-medieval and early modern periods, when the specific idea of diabolical witchcraft developed and when the so-called 'great witch-hunts' occurred. Entries are also provided that deal with magic and witchcraft in the earlier Christian period and classical antiquity, as well as with the lingering belief in witchcraft in the modern world, and with the development of the modern, neo-pagan religion of witchcraft, also known as Wicca. For comparative purposes, some entries have been provided that deal with aspects and systems of magic found in other parts of the world that seem to bear some relation to the idea of witchcraft as it developed in Christian Europe. The regions dealt with are mainly Africa, along with such New-World practices as Voodoo and Santeria. Entries in the dictionary cover important people in the history of witchcraft, from the medieval inquisitors and early modern magistrates who developed the stereotype of the historical witch to the modern individuals who have developed the religion of Wicca. Also included are legal terms and concepts important to the prosecution of the supposed crime of witchcraft, and religious and theological concepts pertaining to the demonic elements that came to be associated with witchcraft, as well as more popular beliefs and aspects of common folklore and mythology that became attached to the developing idea of witchcraft. Geographic entries are also included, discussing the scope of witch-hunting in various regions of Europe and the world, and describing specific examples of major witch-hunts such as those that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts.

About the Author

He has held academic positions at Bethany College, Kansas, at the University of Cincinnati, at the Medieval Institute of the University of Notre Dame, and at Saint Louis University. His principal research interests focus on the history of magic, witchcraft, and superstition in Europe.

Tabish Khair - The Gothic, Postcolonialism and Oth erness, Ghosts from Elsewhere (2009).jpg

'This is a fascinating, diverse and rich book which combines across the Gothic and the postcolonial in its concern with varieties of colonial and imperial Gothic 'Other', at different times, introducing a focus on the "war on terror" as a topical "hook." Khair places the foreign Other as a central function in the Gothic in texts set both in Britain and the ex-colonies, particularly in the Caribbean, where British influence is revealed as frequently demonic.' - Gina Wisker, Head of the Centre for Learning and Teaching, University of Brighton, UK

Tamim Ansary - Destiny Disrupted, A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes (2010).jpg

We in the west share a common narrative of world history. But our story largely omits a whole civilization whose citizens shared an entirely different narrative for a thousand years.

In Destiny Disrupted, Tamim Ansary tells the rich story of world history as the Islamic world saw it, from the time of Mohammed to the fall of the Ottoman Empire and beyond. He clarifies why our civilizations grew up oblivious to each other, what happened when they intersected, and how the Islamic world was affected by its slow recognition that Europe—a place it long perceived as primitive and disorganized—had somehow hijacked destiny.

Kevin Ward - A History of Global Anglicanism (2006 ).jpg

Anglicanism can be seen as irredeemably English. In this book Kevin Ward questions that assumption. He explores the character of the African, Asian, Oceanic, Caribbean and Latin American churches which are now a majority in the world-wide communion, and shows how they are decisively shaping what it means to be Anglican. While emphasising the importance of colonialism and neo-colonialism for explaining the globalisation of Anglicanism, Ward does not focus predominantly on the Churches of Britain and N. America; nor does he privilege the idea of Anglicanism as an 'expansion of English Christianity'. At a time when Anglicanism faces the danger of dissolution Ward explores the historically deep roots of non-Western forms of Anglicanism, and the importance of the diversity and flexibility which has so far enabled Anglicanism to develop cohesive yet multiform identities around the world.

Paul Thompson - The Voice of the Past, Oral Histor y (1988).jpg

In this revised edition of Paul Thompson's successful book, he traces oral history through its own past and weighs up the recent achievements of this international movement. He challenges myths of historical scholarship and looks at the use of oral sources by the historian. The author offers advice on designing a project; discusses reliability of oral evidence; considers the context of the development of historical writing including it's social function.; and looks at memory, the self and the use of drama and therapy. This new edition has been substantially revised and updated and includes an expanded discussion of narrative approaches and new technology used in the recording of information. Reviews from the second edition of Voice of the Past: Oral History 'Paul Thompson is a passionate and convincing crusader in the cause of oral history' The Times Educational Supplement 'It must be rare in modern academic life to replace your own unrivalled book after 10 years with an even better one, but he has done so. His new material on memory and the self, and on drama as therapy, should be read by literary critics in their infancy.' The Independent '...the first book to combine a theory of oral history, the technical processes involved, and a road map of where oral evidence fits into the landscape of western historiography.'

M. B. Synge - A Book of Discovery (1912).jpeg

A fascinating account of the world's famous explorers, including the early travelers in ancient times, the discovery of the New World, explorations in Africa and Australia, and the expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. Many of the explorers tell part of their story in their own words. Amply illustrated with reproductions of early maps and charts, as well as old woodcuts, drawings, paintings, and miniatures. Emphasis is placed on the explorers' "record of splendid endurance, of hardships bravely borne, of silent toil, of courage and resolution unequalled in the annals of mankind, of self-sacrifice unrivalled and faithful lives laid ungrudgingly down."

This edition, first published in 2010, is an unabridged republication of the work originally published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1912.

Sarolta Takacs - The Modern World, 5 Vol. Set (onl y 3 volumes) (2008).jpg

Designed to meet the curriculum needs for students from grades 7 to 12, this five-volume encyclopedia explores world history from approximately 5000 C.E. to the present. Organized alphabetically within geographical volumes on Africa, Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southwest Asia, and Asia and the Pacific, entries cover the social, political, scientific and technological, economic, and cultural events and developments that shaped the modern world.

Each volume includes articles on history, government, and warfare; the development of ideas and the growth of art and architecture; religion and philosophy; music; science and technology; and daily life in the civilizations covered. Boxed features include "Turning Point," "Great Lives," "Into the Twenty-First Century," and "Modern Weapons". Maps, timelines, and illustrations illuminate the text, and a glossary, a selected bibliography, and an index in each volume round out the set.

Africa is a vast continent. The United States could easily fit into the Sahara, and there would still be room on the continent for China, India, New Zealand, Argentina, and half of Europe. It is a place of great ethnic and linguistic diversity. The land is home to several thousand different ethnic groups, and more than 800 languages are spoken there, including Arabic, native languages such as Swahili, Zulu, and Hausa, and European languages such as English, French, Portuguese, and German.

Africa’s history is as complicated and varied as its geography and people. Two of the world’s first great civilizations—the Egyptian and the Kush—arose in Africa thousands of years ago. Parts of North Africa and Ethiopia were among the earliest lands to convert to Christianity, and large parts of northern Africa were conquered by Muslim invaders, leading many Africans to convert to Islam. In the Middle Ages, several large empires—such as Mali, Songhai, and Ghana—rose and fell.

Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz - The Fairy-Faith in Ce ltic Countries (2010).jpg

With a new introduction by Carl McColman, this new edition of the classic study of traditional Celtic spirituality ties ancient Paganism, medieval myth, and traditional Fairy beliefs into a powerful celebration of Celtic wisdom and magic. The author, W. Y. Evans-Wentz, was best known as the translator of The Tibetan Book of the Dead. In the world of Celtic spirituality he made his mark through The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries. This magnificent book is a collection of stories, anecdotes, and legends from all six of the regions where Celtic ways have persisted in the modern world: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, and the Isle of Man. It examines how Fairy spirituality survived in the face of hostility caused by modern science and religion. It celebrates how beliefs (which only a century ago were dismissed as quaint and superstitious) were, in fact, powerful principles of ancient Pagan magic that remained essential features of the Celtic world for generation after generation.

About the Author:

"Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz was an anthropologist and writer who was a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and as a teenager read Madame Blavatsky's Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine and became interested in the teachings of Theosophy. He received both his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, where he studied with William James and William Butler Yeats. He then studied Celtic mythology and folklore at Jesus College, Oxford (1907); there he adopted the form Evans-Wentz for his name. He travelled extensively, spending time in Mexico, Europe, and the Far East. He spent the years of the First World War in Egypt. He later travelled to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and India, reaching Darjeeling in 1919; there he enountered Tibetan religious texts firsthand.

Evans-Wentz is best known for his series of four books of spiritual works translated from the Tibetan. Evans-Wentz credited himself only as the compiler and editor of these volumes. The actual translation of the texts was performed by Tibetan Buddhists, primarily Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdup (1868-1922), a teacher of English at the Maharaja's Boy's School in Gangtok, Sikkim who had also done translations for Alexandra David-Neel and Sir John Woodroffe.

The Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University has hosted The Evans-Wentz Lectureship in Asian Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics since 1969, funded by a bequest from Evans-Wentz." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

J. M. Beattie - Policing and Punishment in London 1660-1750 (2001).jpg

"John Beattie's magisterial Crime and the Courts in England 1600-1800 was the first major monograph to arise from the vigorous research culture which developed around the study of crime and criminal justice in early modern England during the 1970s and 80s. This, his second, equally magisterial work on this theme builds upon his earlier study but also offers fresh perspectives. It is compulsory reading for all students of early modern English criminal justice, has much to offer students of urban society, sheds interesting light on the history of women and, finally, provides some unexpected insights into mainstream politics and government."

Charles F. W. Higham - Encyclopedia of Ancient Asi an Civilizations (2004).jpg

The civilizations of Ancient Asia have played a major role in humankind's development through their accumulated knowledge and impressive achievements, yet they are little known to most Americans. Encyclopedia of Ancient Asian Civilizations is a new and exciting addition to Facts On File's series of encyclopedias on ancient history. Written by one of the preeminent scholars in the field, this authoritative single-volume reference covers ancient Asia from the Indus Valley Civilization in approximately 3000 BCE through the Cambodian empires of Funan, Chenla, and Angkor that lasted until the 15th century. No previous work has brought together the complete range of early states under one cover. In many cases—for example, the states of Champa in present-day Vietnam, which are only described in French and Vietnamese texts, and the Dvaravati state of central Thailand, which is best covered in the Thai language—the civilizations included have thus far been treated only marginally in the English language.

With 50 black-and-white photographs and 4 maps, Encyclopedia of Ancient Asian Civilizations is the ideal resource for high school and college students researching the subject as well as a useful scholarly reference. Likewise, the many travelers who are headed to Asia will find this historical overview enlightening. The encyclopedia begins with a lengthy introduction to the history of the region, followed by approximately 900 detailed, A-to-Z entries that cover archaeological sites, agricultural and economic development, personalities and political institutions, as well as articles on religion, trade, warfare, and other important topics. Easy to use and valuable for quick reference, more in-depth research, and browsing, this volume is an essential addition to every library's world history collection.

Civilizations covered include:

* Ancient Burma
* Ancient China
* Ancient India
* Ancient Japan
* Ancient Korea
* Ancient Sri Lanka
* Central Asia and the Silk Road
* Champa in Vietnam
* Dvaravati in Thailand
* Funan, Chenla, and Angkor in Cambodia
* The Indus Civilization
* The Maritime states of Southeast Asia.
