Christopher Hood - Shinkansen, From Bullet Train t o Symbol of Modern Japan (2006).jpg

'The image of the shinkansen - or "bullet train" - passing Mount Fuji is one of the most renowned images of modern Japan. Yet, despite its international reputation for speed and punctuality, little is understood about what makes it work so well and what its impact is. This book provides a comprehensive account of the history of the shinkansen, from its planning during the Pacific War, to its launch in 1964 and subsequent development. It goes on to analyze the reasons behind the bullet train's success, and demonstrates how it went from being simply a high-speed rail network to attaining the status of iconic national symbol. It considers the shinkansen's relationship with national and regional politics and economic development, its financial viability, the environmental challenges it must cope with, and the ways in which it reflects and influences important aspects of Japanese society. It concludes by considering whether the bullet train can be successful in other countries developing high-speed railways. Overall, this book provides a thorough examination of the phenomenon of the shinkansen, and its relationship with Japanese society.

Geoffrey Holmes - British Politics in the Age of A nne (2003).jpg

British Politics in the Age of Anne is a book that anyone with an interest in the period will wish to possess: completely authoritative, yet as attractive to the student and the general reader as to the specialist. The author has both revised the text and written a substantial new introduction to this edition.
Geoffrey Holmes reveals how little the structure and contents of politics under Queen Anne had in common with the connexion-ridden scene of the mid-eighteenth century, as portrayed by Namier. He depicts a period of fierce and genuine party conflict, in which society at many levels was divided by great issues of principle and policy. Through frequent and hotly-contested elections and long parliamentary campaigns both Whigs and Tories enjoyed triumphs and suffered disasters. And while struggling against one another, each had to contend with internal factions and pressure-groups, the divisive thrust of personal ambitions and the hostility of the queen to single party rule.
British politics in the Age of Anne is more than a major work of analysis and a historiographical landmark. By liberal use of quotation, eye for detail, sense of atmosphere and vivid character sketches of both leading and lesser personae, Professor Holmes recreates the unique political life of the high Augustan age.

James Martin - Piero Gobetti and the Politics of L iberal Revolution (2008).jpg

"This well-written and erudite book performs a valuable service for Anglophone readers in being the first full-length study of Gobetti in English. But its merits are far greater than that: this is an important assessment of a political thinker from a contemporary methodological viewpoint, one that employs various parallel techniques and perspectives in order to draw out maximum interpretative advantage. James Martin skillfully blends intellectual biography with attention to various contexts--some historical, some ideational, and some relating to the future reception of Gobetti's writings and his personal impact. This is an excellent study that will assist in giving some subtle aspects of early twentieth-century Italian thought the prominence they have not hitherto received outside Italy."--Michael Freeden, Mansfield College, University of Oxford
Piero Gobetti was an astonishing figure. A radical liberal and fierce critic of Italian politics in the years after World War I, he was fascinated by the workers' struggles in his native Turin and by Gramsci's vision of a factory-based democracy. Gobetti proposed liberalism as an emancipatory theory grounded in social conflicts. "Revolutionary liberalism," as he called it, guided his opposition to Fascism and, following his untimely death at twenty-five, inspired key figures in the Italian Resistance. Accessible but critical, this volume is the first English-language study of Gobetti's political ideas and offers a balanced assessment of his enduring significance.

Lawrence Barham, Peter Mitchell - The First Africa ns, African Archaeology from the Earliest Toolmake rs to Most Recent Foragers (2008).jpg

All History - Lawrence Barham, Peter Mitchell - The First Africans,... the Earliest Toolmakers to Most Recent Foragers 2008.jpg

Africa has the longest record - some 2.5 million years - of human occupation of any continent. For nearly all of this time, its inhabitants have made tools from stone and have acquired their food from its rich wild plant and animal resources. Archaeological research in Africa is crucial for understanding the origins of humans and the diversity of hunter-gatherer ways of life. This book pres an up-to-date, comprehensive synthesis of the record left by Africa's earliest hominin inhabitants and hunter-gatherers. It combines the insights of archaeology with those of other disciplines, such as genetics and palaeoenvironmental science. African evidence is critical to important debates, such as the origins of stone toolmaking, the emergence of recognisably modern forms of cognition and behaviour, and the expansion of successive hominins from Africa to other parts of the world. Africa's enormous ecological diversity and exceptionally long history also pre an unparalleled opportunity to examine the impact of environment change on human populations. African foragers have also long been viewed as archetypes of the hunter-gatherer way of life, a view that is debated in this volume. Also examined is their relevance for understanding the development and spread of food production and the social and ideological significance of therock art that many of them have produced.

Lester K. Little - Plague and the End of Antiquity , The Pandemic of 541-750 (2008).jpg

Factors like epidemics as important historical forces have been largely underestimated. Little information has survived from these dark centuries and even less facts are available. This book tries to assess the demographic, economic and fiscal consequences of one of the first big epidemics which was recognised as such. Bringing in new methodologic approaches from biochemistry, the authors allow a clearer view with new facts.Due to the fact that we know very little from our written sources and even the demographics of antiquity are only in the beginnings, these new scientific approaches are an absolute necessity. A must for any student of the dark ages.

Morris Low - Japan on Display, Photography and the Emperor (2006).jpg

Sixty years on from the end of the Pacific War, Japan on Display examines representations of the Meiji emperor, Mutsuhito (1852-1912) and his grandson the Showa emperor, Hirohito who was regarded as a symbol of the nation, in both war and peacetime. Much of this representation was aided by the phenomenon of photography.
The introduction and development of photography in the nineteenth century coincided with the need to make Hirohito’s grandfather, the young Meiji Emperor, more visible. Photo books and albums became a popular format for presenting seemingly objective images of the monarch, reminding the Japanese of their proximity to the Emperor, and the imperial family. In the twentieth century, these 'national albums’ provided a visual record of wars fought in the name of the Emperor, while also documenting the reconstruction of Tokyo, scientific expeditions, and imperial tours.
Drawing on archival documents, photographs, and sources in both Japanese and English, this book throws new light on the history of twentieth-century Japan and the central role of Hirohito. With Japan’s defeat in the Pacific War, the Emperor was transformed from wartime leader to peace-loving scientist. Japan on Display seeks to understand this reinvention of a more 'human’ Emperor and the role that photography played in the process.

All History - Patricia Chastain Howe - Foreign Policy and the Frenc... Pierre LeBrun, and the Belgian Plan, 1789-1793 2008.jpg

"This is a significant project and the archival research that has gone into it is impressive. Howe offers a striking new interpretation of French foreign policy during this period, arguing that the 'Belgian Plan' of Charles Dumouriez and Pierre LeBrun was embraced by the Girondin political leadership and played an important role in the domestic political wrangles of 1792-93."--Paul Hanson, Butler University "This is a rich book, full of fresh and original research, that makes a compelling case for the centrality of foreign policy to understanding the era of the French Revolution."--Marc Lerner, The University of Mississippi
This study of the French Revolution reveals that from March 1792 to April 1793, French foreign policy was dominated not by the leaders of the French revolutionary government, but by two successive French foreign ministers: Charles-Francois Dumouriez and Pierre LeBrun.

All History - Rodney Castleden - The Stonehenge People, An Explorat...ration of Life in Neolithic Britain 4700-2000 BC 1992.jpg

Looking beyond the origins of Stonehenge to the origins of the culture that produced it, Rodney Castleden debunks many of the popular myths surrounding the monument and its builders. Castleden shows, for example, that Stonehenge was not built by the Druids, nor was its Heel Stone used to mark the position of the midsummer sunrise. Castleden examines the Stonehenge people's material culture as well as their social, political and religious structures to present a convincing interpretation of Stonehenge's cultural context and symbolic meaning.

Engaging case studies, drawn from the author's own practice, include:

* The Montague Building and Watauga Hall
* The Restoration of St. Helena's Church
* Market Hall Rehabilitation
* Differential Settlement at St. Philip's Moravian Church
* James Madison's Montpelier
* Relocating the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
* The Timber Trusses of Burr, Town, and Haupt
* The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge
* A New Covered Bridge for Old Salem
* The Tohickon Aqueduct

Each case study features a description of the project and its history, a condition assessment, structural analysis, discussion, recommendations, and a description of the subsequent intervention as executed with drawings and photographs.

Both a foundational text for students anticipating a career in preservation and a guide for seasoned structural engineers, Structural Investigation of Historic Buildings gives preservation-minded professionals the tools they need to ensure that potential candidates for restoration, rehabilitation, or adaptive reuse do not meet the wrecking ball without a second chance.

Julia Guernsey - Ritual and Power in Stone, The Pe rformance of Rulership in Mesoamerican Izapan Styl e Art (2006).jpg

All History - Julia Guernsey - Ritual and Power in Stone, The Perfo...e of Rulership in Mesoamerican Izapan Style Art 2006.jpg

The ancient Mesoamerican city of Izapa in Chiapas, Mexico, is renowned for its extensive collection of elaborate stone stelae and altars, which were carved during the Late Preclassic period (300 BC-AD 250). Many of these monuments depict kings garbed in the costume and persona of a bird, a well-known avian deity who had great significance for the Maya and other cultures in adjacent regions. This Izapan style of carving and kingly representation appears at numerous sites across the Pacific slope and piedmont of Mexico and Guatemala, making it possible to trace political and economic corridors of communication during the Late Preclassic period. In this book, Julia Guernsey offers a masterful art historical analysis of the Izapan style monuments and their integral role in developing and communicating the institution of divine kingship. She looks specifically at how rulers expressed political authority by erecting monuments that recorded their performance of rituals in which they communicated with the supernatural realm in the persona of the avian deity. She also considers how rulers used the monuments to structure their built environment and create spaces for ritual and politically charged performances. Setting her discussion in a broader context, Guernsey also considers how the Izapan style monuments helped to motivate and structure some of the dramatic, pan-regional developments of the Late Preclassic period, including the forging of a codified language of divine kingship. This pioneering investigation, which links monumental art to the matrices of political, economic, and supernatural exchange, offers an important new understanding of a region, time period, and group of monuments that played a key role in the history of Mesoamerica and continue to intrigue scholars within the field of Mesoamerican studies.

Steven E. Jones - Against Technology, From the Lud dites to Neo-Luddism (2006).jpg

When the World Trade Center was attacked, George Gilder referred to the terrorists as "Osama Bin Luddites," suggesting that it was American technology that was under attack. Even--and especially in the digital age--the turn against technology is powerful, and the Luddite cause does not disappear.
This book addresses the question of what it might mean today to be a Luddite--that is, to take a stand against technology. Steven Jones here explains the history of the Luddites, British textile works who, from around 1811, proclaimed themselves followers of "Ned Ludd" and smashed machinery they saw as threatening trade.Against Technology is not a history of the Luddites, but a history of an idea: how the activities of a group of British workers in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire came to stand for a global anti--technology philosophy, and how an anonymous collective movement came to be identified with an individualistic personal conviction. Angry textile workers in the early nineteenth century became symbols of a desire for a simple life--certainly not the goal of the actions for which they became famous. Against Technology is, in other words, a book about representations, about the image and the myth of the Luddites and how that myth was transformed over time into modern neo-Luddism.

Using hitherto neglected sources from both occupiers and occupied, official documents, propaganda, memoirs, and novels, he reveals how German views of the East changed during total war, and how these views affected the return of German armies under the Nazis. This persuasive and compelling study fills a yawning gap in the literature of the Great War.

All History - James Murray - Enforcing the English Reformation in I...al Conflict in the Diocese of Dublin, 1534-1590 2009.jpg

This book explores the enforcement of the English Reformation in the heartland of English Ireland during the sixteenth century. Focusing on the diocese of Dublin - the central ecclesiastical unit of the Pale - James Murray explains why the various initiatives undertaken by the reforming archbishops of Dublin, and several of the Tudor viceroys, to secure the allegiance of the indigenous community to the established church ultimately failed. Led by its clergy, the Pale's loyal colonial community ultimately rejected the Reformation and Protestantism because it perceived them to be irreconcilable with its own traditional English culture and medieval Catholic identity. Dr Murray identifies the Marian period, and the opening decade of Elizabeth I's reign, as the crucial times during which this attachment to survivalist Catholicism solidified, and became a sufficiently powerful ideological force to stand against the theological and liturgical innovations advanced by the Protestant reformers.

G. R. S. Mead - The Hymns Of Hermes (2006).jpg

These writings are attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, an ancient Egyptian sage, the founder of all arts and sciences, both mundane and spiritual. Rather than being an actual person, Hermes is the Egyptian personification of the "Gnostic Revealer." Hymns of Hermes examines Hermetic ecstatic hymns, which are songs of a poetic nature used to describe the Gnosis of Hermetic attainment—the ecstatic personal experience of the divine. The invaluable commentary from author G.R.S. Mead makes the hymns themselves comprehensible and relevant to modern seekers, removing the veil of the occult to reveal the secrets behind these verses. He also draws parallels between Gnostic and Hermetic thought, which were strikingly similar. For anyone interested in Gnostic thought and the formation of early Christian doctrine, it is hard to ignore the parallels in Hermetic teachings from the same era. In his introduction, Stephan A. Hoeller describes the role and influence of Hermetic thought on the early Church and Gnostics, its position in the history of Western thought, and its renaissance in Gnostic and Hermetic studies today. This little volume, which might well be called initiatory, is an excellent introduction to the Hermetic Gnosis.
