Terry Coleman - The Nelson Touch, The Life and Leg end of Horatio Nelson (2002).jpg

Admiral Horatio Nelson captures our imaginations like few other military figures. A mixture of tactical originality, raw courage, cruelty, and romantic passion, Nelson in action was daring and direct, a paramount naval genius and a natural born predator. Now, in The Nelson Touch: The Life and Legend of Horatio Nelson, novelist Terry Coleman provides a superb portrait of Britain's most revered naval figure.
Here is a vivid account of Nelson's life, from his childhood and early career at sea--where a high-placed uncle helped speed his advancement to post captain--to gripping accounts of his greatest sea battles. Readers will witness the Battle of the Nile, where Nelson crushed a French squadron of thirteen ships of the line, and the Battle of Trafalgar, where he died at the moment of his greatest triumph. What emerges is a man of strength of mind amounting to genius, frequently generous, always fascinated with women, often uneasy with his superior officers, and absolutely fearless. Coleman also lays bare Nelson's faults: he was a ruthless commander, whose instinct was not just to defeat the enemy but to annihilate him. Indeed, some of Nelson's more controversial actions might be viewed as war crimes today. And he was a skillful self-promoter, who did all he could to advance his own fame. But in the end, that fame was well earned and he was deservedly idolized by the British people.
Sure to appeal to readers of Patrick O'Brian and other seafaring fiction, as well as all military history and naval history buffs, this is a superbly written biography that gives readers the texture and feel of this magnificent life.

Ancient Civilizations - Katherine Reece - West Afr ican Kingdoms, Empires Of Gold and Trade (2005).jpg

This quick, attractive photo-essay in the Ancient Civilizations series introduces the great ancient kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai in all their diverse geography, wildlife, peoples, languages, and cultures. Reece focuses strongly on gold trade, education centers, religions, and rulers--from the Berbers who ruled the Kingdom of Ghana in the fourth century to Mohammed Aski, who in 1493 in the kingdom of Songhai embraced Islam. A final chapter looks at the people today. The chatty text is sometimes too exclamatory, and a there's one statement that signals a European perspective: "The area remained undiscovered and wrapped in mystery for centuries because it was difficult to cross such a vast ocean of sand." (Undiscovered by whom? The people who lived there?) But the book is both informative and attractive, the type is clear and readable, and colorful sidebars and photos on every page add interest as well as additional facts. Other new titles in the series include The Egyptians and The Mesopotamians. Hazel Rochman

Jan Bremmer, Herman Roodenburg - A Cultural Histor y of Gesture, From Antiquity to the Present Day (1 991).jpg

People are often inclined to view our gestures as something "natural". Yet a closer look at history tells us that they change from one period to another, and that these changes can provide us with vital insights into social and cultural developments of the past. This book sets out to explore such changes in the development of gestures - from modes of walking and oratorial gesture in Greece and Rome to the origin of the modern handshake, from the arm akimbo in Renaissance portraiture to early modern table manners, from Spanish tavern sociability to the modern kiss. These discrete accounts place the history of gestures in their wider cultural context and together form a vivid picture of life and manners through the centuries.

Stephen Rippon - Beyond the Medieval Village, The Diversification of Landscape Character in Southern Britain (2009).jpg

All History - Stephen Rippon - Beyond the Medieval Village, The Div...ation of Landscape Character in Southern Britain 2009.jpg

The varied character of Britain's countryside and towns provides communities with a strong sense of local identity. One of the most significant features of the southern British landscape is the way that its character differs from region to region, with compact villages in the Midlands contrasting with the sprawling hamlets of East Anglia and isolated farmsteads of Devon. Even more remarkable is the very "English" feel of the landscape in southern Pembrokeshire, in the far south west of Wales.
Hoskins described the English landscape as "the richest historical record we possess," and in this book Stephen Rippon explores the origins of regional variations in landscape character, arguing that while some landscapes date back to the centuries either side of the Norman Conquest, other areas across southern Britain underwent a profound change around the 8th century AD.

Stewart Lone - Daily Lives of Civilians in Wartime Asia, From the Taiping Rebellion to the Vietnam W ar (2008).jpg

All History - Stewart Lone - Daily Lives of Civilians in Wartime As...a, From the Taiping Rebellion to the Vietnam War 2008.jpg

In this detailed account of civilian lives during wartime in Asia, high school students, undergrads, and general readers alike can get a glimpse into the often dismal, but surprisingly resilient, lives led by ordinary people-those who did not go off to war but were powerfully affected by it nonetheless. How did people live on a day-to-day basis with the cruelty and horror of war right outside their doorsteps? What were the reactions and views of those who did not fight on the fields? How did people come together to cope with the losses of loved ones and the sacrifices they had to make on a daily basis? This volume contains accounts from the resilient civilians who lived in Asia during the Taiping and Nian Rebellions, the Philippine Revolution, the Wars of Meiji Japan, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
This volume begins with R.G. Tiedemann's account of life in China in the mid-nineteenth century, during the Taiping and Nian Rebellions. Tiedemann examines social practices imposed on the civilians by the Taiping, life in the cities and country, women, and the militarization of society. Bernardita Reyes Churchill examines how civilians in the Philippines struggled for freedom under the imperial reign Spain and the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Stewart Lone looks at how Meiji Japan's wars on the Asian continent affected the lives and routines of men, women, and children, urban and rural. He also explains how the media played a role during the wars, as well as how people were able to spend leisure time and even make wartime humor. Di Wang uses the public space of the teahouse and its culture as a microcosm of daily life in China during tumultuous years of civil and world war, 1937-1949. Simon Partner explores Japanese daily life during World War II, investigating youth culture, the ways people came together, and how the government took control of their lives by rationing food, clothing, and other resources. Shigeru Sato continues by examining the harshness of life in Indonesia during World War II and its aftermath. Korean life from 1950-1953 is looked at by Andrei Lankov, who takes a look at the heart-rending lives of refugees. Finally, Lone surveys life in South Vietnam from 1965-1975, from school children to youth protests to how propaganda affected civilians. This volume offers students and general readers a glimpse into the lives of those often forgotten.

Tracey Banivanua-mar - Violence and Colonial Dialo gue, Australia-Pacific Indentured Labor Trade (200 7).jpg

During the post-abolition period a trade in cheap and often cost-neutral labor flourished in the western Pacific. For more than forty years, it supplied tens of thousands of indentured laborers to the sugar industry of northeastern Australia. Violence and Colonial Dialogue tells the story of its impact on the people who were traded. From the beaches and shallows of the Pacific's frontiers to the plantations and settlements of Queensland and beyond, a collective tale of the pioneers of today's Australian South Sea Island community is told through an abundant and effective use of materials that characterize the colonial record, including police registers, court records, prison censuses, administrative reports, legislative debates, and oral histories. With a thematic focus on the physical violence that was central to the experience of people who were voluntarily or involuntarily recruited, the history that emerges is a powerful tale that is at once both tragic and triumphant.
Violence and Colonial Dialogue also tells a more universal story of colonization. Set mostly in the British settler-colony of Queensland during the last forty years of the nineteenth century, it explores the brutality embedded in the structures of a colonial state, while attempting to recover the stories that such processes obscured. In so doing it delivers insights into the operation of violence in colonial relations, makes valuable observations on the dynamics of racial construction in the colonial world, and develops novel perspectives and strategies for the telling of colonial pasts. The resulting dialogue between coercion and agency provides an important intervention in existing debates over the meaning of colonial history.
Empirically rich and theoretically sophisticated, Violence and Colonial Dialogue will be of considerable interest to Pacific and Australia historians and anthropologists and those studying colonial societies, indentured labor, and related topics.

All History - Alan Young, Michael J. Stead - In the Footsteps of Ro...Bruce, In Scotland, Northern England and Ireland 2010.jpg

For over 600 years, Robert Bruce has occupied a unique place in Scottish history. Yet behind the legendary figure is a complex, and in many ways more intriguing, picture. Bruce was a man who not only led his nation to a famous victory over the English at Bannockburn, but also overcame powerful odds to win power in Scotland and fulfil his family's long-held ambition for political power. This book, illustrated with superb colour and black and white photographs, takes the reader on a journey from Bruce's birth in south-west Scotland to his kingship and triumph at Bannockburn and finally to his death as King of Scotland in 1329, covering in detail all of the principal characters and dramatic settings of the major political and military events of the period.

All History - Alan Young, Michael J. Stead - In the Footsteps of Wi...illiam Wallace, In Scotland and Northern England 2010.jpg

For nearly 700 years debate has raged over the true nature of William Wallace and his role in Scotland's turbulent history. Was he the 'Braveheart' of Blind Harry's legendary account, the bold, but savage hero of the Scottish wars? Or, as some contemporary chroniclers attested, nothing but a villainous thief and vagrant fugitive? This book draws on a wide range of contemporary and modern sources to look behind the figure of legend to find Wallace's true character. These superb photographs trace Wallace's life from his modest upbringing in south-west Scotland to his remarkable victory as a 'guerilla' leader and military commander at Stirling Bridge, and to his eventual betrayal, capture and painful execution seven years later. This is an essential travel companion for a journey through the landscapes and places associated with Wallace in Scotland and Northern England, and a vibrant new insight into the reality of Scotland's most famous battlefield hero.

Robert McGhee - The Last Imaginary Place, A Human History of the Arctic World (2005).jpg

Sea ice and the midnight sun, flaming aurora and endless winter night the arctic of traveler's tales and romantic novels is the unattainable dream of a vast and desolate world the last imaginary place on Earth. Now, in this fascinating volume, renowned archeologist Robert McGhee lifts the veil to reveal the true Arctic. Combining anthropology, history, and personal memoir, this book dispels romanticized notions of the Arctic as a world apart, exotic and isolated, revealing a land far more fascinating than we had imagined.

McGhee paints a vivid portrait of the movement of Viking farmers across the North Atlantic islands, and of the long and arduous searches for sea-passages to Asia. We meet the fur-traders who pioneered European expansion across the northern forests of Canada and Siberia, the whalers and ivory-hunters who ravaged northern seas, and patriotic explorers racing to reach the North Pole. Most important, McGhee offers far more coverage of the native peoples of the Arctic, societies that other histories usually neglect. We discover how northerners have learned to exploit a rich "hunter's world" where game is, contrary to our expectations, far easier to find than in more temperate lands.

McGhee takes us to a thousand-year-old Tuniit campsite perfectly preserved in the Arctic cold, follows the entrepreneurial Inuit as they cross the Arctic in search of metal, and reveals the dangers that native people face today from industrial pollution and global warming. Flavored by McGhee's personal reflections based on thirty years of work and travel in the region, here is a wide ranging, enlightening look at one of the most culturally rich and fascinating areas of the world.

Robert Tombs - The Paris Commune 1871 (1999).jpg

The Paris Commune was the biggest and last popular revolution in Western Europe. The short-lived commune and its subsequent repression exposed deep divisions in French society. This book is an account of those times.
Here is an authoritative guide to the biggest, and last, of the cycle of popular revolutions in Western Europe that began in 1789.
In March 1871, the Parisians, reeling from defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the ensuing siege of Paris by the German army, set up their own revolutionary government in defiance of the National Assembly (based close by at Versailles) under Adolphe Thiers, which controlled the country at large. The Communards, who opposed the humiliating peace terms offered to the National Assembly by the victorious Germans, had their own agenda of economic and social reforms; and their numbers included republicans, socialists, anarchists, and even a few Marxists (Marx was himself greatly influenced by the episode). Troops of the National Assembly besieged Paris in turn, eventually retaking the city on 28 May 1872. In the final stages of resistance, the communards shot many of their hostages and burnt parts of the city, including the Tuileries. The government troops took a terrible revenge: thousands died in the bloodbath that followed.
The short-lived Commune and its subsequent repression were important enough in their own right; but they cast an even longer shadow. The divisions they caused or exposed in French politics and society were still were still painful generations later. But that shadow stretched beyond France: one of the most dramatic, and traumatic, episodes of the nineteenth century, the Commune became a symbol for the wider world, a potent inspiration for the radical left, and an awful warning to the conservative right.
In his stirring account, Robert Tombs describes these tumultuous events, and sets them in their immediate political and social context - in particular seeking to understand who in Paris supported the Commune and what their motives were. He considers the Commune s long-term significance for both France and Europe; and he explores the diverse historical interpretations it has generated. The subject has attracted much recent research (though there has been no general study of the Commune in English for a generation), much of it from fresh angles - including gender, culture and community, all of which find their place here. This book makes that new work accessible to students and non-specialists, as well as introducing much previously unpublished material on its own account.
Admirers of Robert Tombs s celebrated France 1814-1914 - packed with telling detail and vivid human interest, as well as a masterly control of the larger picture - will know what to expect in these pages; and they will not be disappointed.
ROBERT TOMBS is Reader in French History at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow and Tutor of St John s College, Cambridge.

Willem Otterspeer - The Bastion of Liberty, Leiden University Today and Yesterday (2009).jpg

Leiden University was founded as an institution that would embody a particular set of academic ethics that sought to improve society through the acquisition of knowledge. In this volume, author Willem Otterspeer draws on the idea of Leiden as a “bastion of liberty” and proposes that concepts such as “equilibrium” and “scale” are key to understanding the university as an institution, ultimately showing how universities are a form of social capital, one of Western society’s answers to the dilemma of collective action, and an instrument for preserving and restoring continuity in the world.
