This Dutch progrock band was rooted in the schoolband Frontline. In '93 most members of that band founded the cover band TRUSS. Their decision to write own compositions in the neo-progressive rock tradition led to the demo-tape "A Scream For Help". When the guitarist left, newcomer Bart van Helmond completed the current line-up with Erwin Boerenkamps (vocals), John van Heugten (keyboards), Maikel van der Meer (drums) and Niels Nijssen (bass). These musicians delivered the acclaimed mini-CD "Quest For The Heartland" (2000), Martin ORFORD from IQ named it one of the best progrock CD's in the last years! RICOCHER shared bills with SAGA and ARENA and in 2001 the band was awarded as Best New Band by The Classic Rock Society. The next year RICOCHER released their second album entitled "Cathedral of Emotions", a fine progrock album with strong hints from the neo-prog masters (mainly PENDRAGON but also MARILLION).

Lorien - Children's Games 1994.7z

English neo-prog band who mixes elements of YES, RUSH, MARILLION, GENESIS and PINK FLOYD. Initially formed in 1989 by writing duo Mark McLeod on keyboards and Darren Newitt on guitar, the band only became a quintet in 1993 after an ad in Melody Maker and several screenings resulted in the hiring of vocalist/guitarist Sean Filkins (ex-SOMA). Filkins, in turn, recommended his SOMA buddy, drummer Phillip Legende who joined in; bass player Geoff Curtis completed the line-up.

With its Tolkien connotation, their name is a give-away to their style as their highly melodic album "Children's Games", released in 1994, is very GENESIS-like, circa "Wind and Wuthering", with vocals reminiscent of Jon Anderson's and Nick Barrett's. Among others, the CD features a 19-minute track with PENDRAGON-like piano passages, some slow build-ups that ease into heavy progressive moments; it also treats the listener with various tempo changes and impressive guitar solos, intros and outros. The mix is a bit weak but the compositions are interesting and the musicianship fairly impressive.

Recommended to GENESIS fans of the 1976-80 era.

Their music should appeal to a wide range of prog fans. Such serious groups, whose fiery GENESIS-like neo progressive is inspired by the best present day musicians, are hard to find.
"Alya" is a concept double album with strong melodic material and grand moments and gestures that many prog lovers are sure to like. The story is based on themes from the bible, sound and artwork are done on a very professional level. The sound is very similar with CLEPSYDRA, the reason for this is not only the guitar work but also the lead vocals done by CLEPSYDRA's lead singer Aluisio Maggini. The songs are very melodic, a little bit more complex than CLEPSYDRA and the use of violin and trumpet varies the whole thing. It is a very good 70's style prog that hints to the 80's. PFM could have made this record in the 80's! Neo prog at his best.

Abstraction Layer - The Glass Flower 2010.7z

Abstraction Layer is a Symphonic Prog band from São Paulo, Brazil that consists of three members of other bands; Diego Sgrillo from Cinema Show, Jorge Sanchez from Wejah and Fernando Pacheco from Recordando O Vale Das Maçãs and GALF. Sanchez is an accomplished lead vocalist, Pacheco plays all acoustic and electric guitars, and Diego plays keyboards, bass and drums. The band has become quite well known in Brazil playing the music that has defined their inimitable style, a symphonic keyboard dominated sound with orchestrated passages of guitar. Some of their more well-known songs are Thin Ice, Nightwalker, Winter Gates and The Glass Flower, all coming from the 2010 album "The Glass Flower". A feature of the album is Sgrillo´s chosen timbres for his keyboards, waves of Hammonds and moogs, including some weird digital sounds along with more familiar vintage ones, an excellent work. The title track is very lightweight prog, with influences of soft Genesis or Emerson Lake and Palmer, consisting of a heavy emphasis on Hammond, Moog and a concise guitar sound. The vocals of Sanchez are sung in English, gentle and high falsetto like Jon Anderson. Fernando Pacheco is a master of guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, and has become very well known as one of Brazil's finest, a virtuoso on lead soloing and rhythm playing. This collaboration of the three inventive prog artists has been eagerly awaited and hopefully will gain some worldwide acceptance now with the release of the debut album

Primitive Instinct-2000 Belief.7z

PRIMITIVE INSTINCT are a band from the UK and have been around since the late 80s although in those days there were five members. They definitely have a sound that is all their ownIt is pleasant, mid-tempo progressive pop, only occasionally with a slight edge. The music is actually very melodic rock with lashing of vocal harmonies. They make solid rock music that conveys a lot of emotion and honesty.

If you are new to PRIMITIVE INSTINCT but have stayed with me so far, I'd recommend "Belief" as your starting point. It's not so much that PI sound like MARILLION, but there is a similarly directed energy, a similarity in arrangement and feel. Other bands that came to mind were GREY LADY DOWN, IQ, NIADEM'S GHOST and GENESIS.

argos - cruel symmetry 2012.7z

"Cruel Symmetry" is the third album by the german band ARGOS. They are german, but their sound is very british. Not only the words (Robert Gozon is an english teacher), the whole direction of the music, the themes and concept is pure british-progressive-rock. On "Argos", the 2009 debut, they made their statement to their influences: Genesis and Gentle Giant, the Canterbury-scene and the adult Beatles. The second album "Circles" (2010) was again a successful mixture of seventies spirit and temporary sound. The mellotron and analog synths meets "Cubase" and "Logic". And now in 2012 "Cruel Symmetry" is out. The cover (as always by Thomas Klarmann) is once more a perfect mirror to the spirit, themes, lyrics and music of the album. It starts with the title track, a 13 part- suite over more than 20 minutes (they never reached the 10-minute border before). This centerpiece has all the necessary ingredients: strong melodies, floating intrumental parts, combining themes, a textual concept and a hymnic conclusion. All the trademarks of the band were shown. The composition is sophisticated, arrangements are elaborated, the sound floats between a magic flute, prominent keyboards and guitars, opulent bass and drums and at least very individual vocols. The other six songs are on the same high level. The lyrics are well-thought-out and humorous ("flying Robert"; "his hat goes North"). The songwriting is elaborate and consequent, the music is thrilling and exciting all the time. A delicate album, tender in mood with a little heavy edge in "Caught within the light".

Apogee - Waiting for the Challenge 2012.7z

APOGEE is another one-man band from Germany. Arne Schäfer plays all the instruments and sings in a "Hammillian oriented" progressive style. Although the thoughful lyrics feature in the music, there are very good intrumental textures on the background. This combination makes the music very interesting, although ground-breaking sounds are found here... there's always a component referring to "I have listened to this before somewhere". Its worth to mention that the albums are very well produced in general.

Pymlico - Directions 2012.7z

Arild Brøter provided an interesting musical solo project released under the band moniker Pymlico. The music he writes can be described as instrumental, progressive with symphonic rock. Melodic, but with allot of different variations. Brøter has worked on this project for quite some time and the debut CD Inspirations was released in 2011. The music was mainly recorded and mixed in his home studio. Brøter played the drums on every track and some keyboards and guitar. His brother Øyvind played hammond organ and keyboards. Other musical friends and collaborators were willing to help on lead guitars, grand pianos, saxophones, bass guitars and so on. The album is released on hisown lable ?Spider House Records?. As a young musician, Neal's dream was like many others-to find success in the pop music world. But after years of struggling in the LA singer-songwriter scene, he realized that his dream would not materialize. Eschewing conventional wisdom, Neal took a courageous step: he about-faced and devoted himself to progressive rock, the music truly in his heart. The obscure and fiercely competitive genre held little chance of commercial success. Undaunted, he formed the quirkily-named Spock's Beard with his brother, Alan. They recorded The Light with what money they could scrape together. Against all odds, it was a breakout success, sending shockwaves through the small genre's community.

Over the next 10 years, Spock's Beard released 10 critically acclaimed CDs and 2 concert DVDs, ascending to the top of the "prog" world. Neal also released 6 CDs and 3 DVDs with Transatlantic, the heralded prog "supergroup" comprised of the world's finest prog musicians. The proverbial wayward son, Neal had finally found the success he dreamed of. But something was missing. While on the outside Neal had it all; on the inside, something was missing. Morse came to realize that for him, embracing the Christian faith was the fulfillment of his spiritual quest. His walk was at once gradual and sudden-and like with so many, completely unexpected. As he continued, his path increasingly revealed more of what his heart had sought all along. Yet he also began to find his career growing at odds with his faith. The rising spiritual tension and increasing commercial success finally came to a head with the release of Snow (2002), Spock's Beard's (with Morse) magnum opus.and swan song.

The extraordinary 2-CD rock opera, composed by Morse, was widely acclaimed as the group's finest. But it was the end of the era: Neal made the agonizing decision to leave Spock's Beard. After also leaving Transatlantic, the transformation was complete. Despite having finally achieved the success he had long sought, Morse began all over again; musically, emotionally and spiritually. Neal then embarked upon the most ambitious musical project of his career. Entitled Testimony (2003), it chronicles his spiritual and musical journey in words and music. The 2 CD set (3 CDs for the Special Edition) spans over two hours as one continuous piece of music. It ranges in style from a full gospel choir to hard rock; from a symphony orchestra to contemporary pop.

The MAZE OF TIME story began in October 2001 when guitarist, composer and lyricist Robert I. Edman grew weary of being the hired gun, playing other people's music as a designated guitarist for various productions. With a couple of other musicians, he was at one point well on his way to the US west-coast, but opted out as the headroom for originality and thinking-out-of-the-box musical experimentation was nonexistent in the mainstream pop-scene. Edman gathered two old friends to form an investigative trio in Stockholm, Sweden - bass player Janne Persson and drummer Thomas Nordh - to elaborate on a string of newly composed songs. In the search for additional players adventurous enough to take the less-travelled roads of progression and beyond, the trio was extended by keyboard jockey Alex Jonsson and, for the first five years, with guitarist and vocalist Christer Lindstroem. With the MAZE OF TIME line-up complete the journey began.

Over time, the ideas and arrangements of MAZE OF TIME needed a sanity check, and a three-track demo set known as "Under the Sun" was recorded to tape which, over the following year, resulted in 2006 release of their first full-length album "Tales From The Maze", summarizing the band's first five years of musical findings. With the warmth of analogue 70-ies, yet the steady beat of the 21st century, MAZE OF TIME beckons you to join their musical journey.

MAZE OF TIME cites its closest influence as GENESIS from the "Selling England By The Pound" or "Trick Of The Tail" period and have a sound reminiscent of recent groups such as SPOCK'S BEARD, THE FLOWER KINGS, LIKE WENDY and MARILLION. Though leaning more to the Neo-progressive rather than Symphonic, MAZE OF TIME has virtues from the Symphonic form of progressive rock with lush keyboards, poetic lyrics and lengthy compositions.

The Enid - Invicta 2012.7z

Twenty years ago I went to see Galahad support Aerie Fairie Nonsense, which of course was The Enid under an assumed name, and RJG introduced himself to me by putting his arms around me and asking if I knew he was a poof? Now, that can make quite an impression on a lad, although it has to be said that it didn't have as much impact as seeing him play piano later on that night which was just astounding. RJG is one of those very few musicians who has always brought classical and progressive music together from the early days when he was working with Barclay James Harvest to when he formed The Enid in 1974. Since then the path has been complex and often tortuous, yet still he prevails. The current line-up features original drummer Dave Storey (although he, like Simon Nicol in Fairport, had some time off for good behaviour), guitarist Max Read (who has been there since '97), guitarist Jason Ducker (07), bassist Nick Willes (09), and new singer Joe Payne. It is interesting to see that the band now features a twin guitar attack as not many people would view them as a guitar based band ? as this is all about providing modern classical music.

There are a lot more vocals on this album than I am used to with The Enid, but at the same time it is also full of the styles and arrangements that one expects from RJG and the more I played it the more I was gradually drawn back into his world. In fact there were times when I felt that I was being taken all the way back to "Raindown" from the classic 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' and this new album stands up very well indeed to what is widely regarded as one of their best works. This is a band that is probably only ever going to be appreciated by a relatively small audience as their music is seen as 'high brow' or 'eclectic' even within the prog scene, but if you have never come across The Enid then this album is a great introduction.

Expressive band from the Brazilian scene. Their music has strong influences of FLOYD and CAMEL, but the band has maturity enough to integrate their own ideas to the music, resulting in a powerful and melodic progressive rock combination. "Technolorgy" issued in 2002, goes even further on this path with a complete and true maturity. Progressive Rock masterworks of the 1970s that we regard as the gold fund of it. Highly recommended!

Beggars Opera - Lose A Life 2010.rar

The Scottish band BEGGARS OPERA had its heyday in the early 70's, back then issuing a trio of albums that are generally well regarded. Their recording career went into decline after that, however, and after 1980's "Lifeline" they went on a hiatus. A partial reformation by some members resulted in the less than thrilling effort "The Final Curtain" in 1996 as something of a last whimper. Then in 2007 original guitarist Ricky Gardiner and vocalist Virginia Scott returned with the album "Close to My Heart", and in 2009 this was followed by "Touching the Edge". And these days this reformed version of Beggars Opera seems to have reached some sort of creative peak, issuing no less than 3 full albums in 2010. "Lose a Life" is the last item of this trio.
Late 70's-sounding art rock dominated by two epic creations is what we're served on "Lose My Life", with orientations towards symphonic rock and space rock respectively, all wrapped up inside a concept album dealing with a topic the artist has a strong emotional attachment to. If this sounds intriguing, and in particular if you tend to enjoy bands exploring musical universes not too far away from Pink Floyd in overall style, Beggars Opera and "Lose a Life" might just warrant your attention. As long as you're not looking for a clone band that is: Despite many similarities, Beggars Opera has its own musical and compositional details that create a distinct musical identity.

Shadow Circus - On a Dark and Stormy Night 2012.7z

After 15 years of actively playing in several bands on the NYC music scene, guitarist John Fontana set out to compose music that hearkened back to the golden age of Progressive Rock. His original intention was to compose pieces for his own enjoyment, and to demo his guitar playing while auditioning for bands. But when the music caught the ear of his former band mate, drummer Corey Folta, Corey insisted that the music be fully developed with a band.

Vocalist David Bobick, trained with a degree in Musical Theater, and a variety of rock band credits under his belt, began writing lyrics and vocal melodies. The combination of theatrical training and raw rock-and-roll influence fit perfectly in the context of the music, adding a pop sensibility with his instantly catchy melodies, and a dramatic element while portraying an array of personalities in the songs - from an insidious Circus M.C. in the title track, to a wise old sage in a three-part-epic inspired by the novel The Talisman.

While rehearsing to record their first CD, the band was discovered by bassist Matt Masek, a classically-trained-cellist-turned bass guitarist, who instantly meshed with Corey into a powerhouse rhythm section.

The addition of Matt raised the bar, and John could no longer handle the task of guitars as well as keyboards in live situations, so they set out to find a keyboard player who would be a true prog rock hero. Rising to the challenge was keyboardist Zach Tenorio, at 17 years old already having played onstage at Moogfest with Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, and touring credits with prog rock legends John Wetton, Tony Levin, and Mike Keneally, among others. Zach's showmanship and undeniable skill completes the lineup of this exciting and inspired new progressive rock ensemble.

Together, this lineup has just completed their debut release, "Welcome to the Freakroom", a full-length disk showcasing appealing melodic compositions, replete with the sounds of the golden age of prog - awash with Mellotrons, Hammond, Moog, soaring guitars, intricate drumming, melodic bass playing and dramatic, memorable vocals, this release is sure to appeal to fans of classic symphonic prog, as well as cross-over to all fans of entertaining and colorful rock music.

najnowsza EP-ka NoSound was started as a one man studio project in late 2002 by Giancarlo Erra (also a founding member of the Porcupine Tree tribute band Redshift), but has since become a band for live performances, the current line up is Giancarlo Erra (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Paolo Martellacci (vocals, synths, keyboards), Alessandro Luci (bass, upright bass, keyboards), Paolo Vigliarolo (acoustic guitars) and Gigi Zito (drums). The first NoSound live performance was in April 2005. NoSound take inspiration from early Porcupine Tree, No-Man, Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros, Bark Psychosis and electronic/ambient music. Despite the large number of similarities between Nosound and Porcupine Tree and No-Man, NoSound's music has its own unique feel and sound.

Proto-Kaw-2004 Before Became After.7z

PROTO-KAW is a version of KANSAS that didn't quite make it. Originally named KANSAS, and led by Kerry Livgren, this band started out playing progressive music in the early 70s but due to a number of reasons, disbanded before hitting the big time. Livgren then teamed up with Steve Walsh, Phil Ehart, Rich Williams, Robbie Steinhardt and Dave Hope to form KANSAS which became the KANSAS we all know (and love!). Thus their music sounds a lot like KANSAS, although one can also hear influences of other bands such as GENESIS, JETHRO TULL (with the flute) and ELP, though it is a little disequilibrating to hear KANSAS music without Walsh or Steinhardt at the vocals (which is not a criticism - the vocalist is excellent). PROTO-KAW members are Livgren, Lynn Meredith on vocals, Dan Wright on organ, John Bolton on sax and flute, Craig Kew on bass and Brad Schulz on bass. The liner notes pay tribute to former member Don Montre who passed away at age 39.

CATHEDRAL 2008 The Bridge.7z

The roots of CATHEDRAL lie in a psychedelic band called Odyssey. When that band broke up in 1975, bassist Fred Callan, and mellotronist Tom Doncourt ventured on to form CATHEDRAL. The band was filled out by drummer Mercury Caronia IV, guitarist Rudy Perrone, and vocalist Paul Seal. They toured the Long Island club scene, and bravely decided to play original music. Instead of Pschedelic, they were taking more cues from the prog leaders of the time, the likes of King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant. What Tom Doncourt refers to as a "majestic" sound.

In 1978 they got together with Delta Records, and recorded "Stained Glass Stories." 10,000 copies were printed and sold. Interestingly, Delta Records was not much more than a studio above the Palace Theater in Times Square. However, Delta did have connections to record chains, and had the likes of Duke Ellington and Allison Steele recording right alongside. It was very much like the independent labels of today. New York City itself was fertile territory for progressive rock at the time. Tom Doncourt tells stories of turning old movie theaters into concert halls for one night stands. They built the stages, put in lighting, and wired the spaces for sound themselves.

All of this led to interest from Atlantic Records. They had some meetings, but this was the end of the '70s. The popularity of prog was rapidly declining. So a second album was not to be (or was it?). This did not diminish the importance of "Stained Glass Stories." It became a highly valued collectible, and the subject of much critical acclaim. Some have even called it the best American prog album ever. Renewed interest in prog led Syn-Phonic to re-release the album on CD in 1990.

As prog began to rise again, so did interest in CATHEDRAL. Finally, in 2003, Fred Callan called on his band mates once again. They brought old and new equipment, and had a mission to create progressive music that was true to its history, but not limited by it. The played together, and experimented for three years. Then they entered the studio. The process proved to be too much for Rudy Perrone, and he left the group. The thought of adding a new guitarist to the mix was a source of great anxiety. The guys were blessed to find David Doig. His sensibilities proved to gel right with the vision of the band. After almost 30 years, they released their second album. 2007's "The Bridge" is the follow up, and also a new beginning.

Final Conflict - Return of the Artisan.7z

FINAL CONFLICT plays neo prog with influences from MARILLION. Musically their sound may remind of EGDON HEATH, lots of accent and color, with solo guitar outbursts, shifting rhythms and excellent guitar-keyboard correlations. The emphasis is on vocal oriented compositions. The musicianship is solid and supportive of the song and vocalist.
