Far Cry 2 jest oficjalną kontynuacją wydanej w 2004 roku i bardzo wysoko ocenianej przez graczy strzelaniny. Akcję ponownie obserwujemy z perspektywy pierwszej osoby, dowolnie przemieszczając się po przygotowanych przez producentów mapach i staczając walki z wyjątkowo inteligentnymi przeciwnikami. Jednym z podstawowych elementów odróżniających opisywany sequel od pierwszej części Far Cry’a jest całkowita zmiana lokalizacji rozgrywanych misji. O ile w poprzedniej odsłonie serii była to tropikalna wyspa, o tyle przedstawione w kontynuacji wydarzenia rozgrywają się w Afryce.
