All Quiet in Peking - INTRO
The story centers on an anti-corruption campaign pushed by Chiang Ching-kuo, a leader of the Kuomintang party then ruling the Republic of China from the early 20th century up to 1949, when the party was expelled by the Communists from the mainland and resettled in Taiwan. In the twilight of the Kuomintang’s rule, Chiang was trying to turn back the tide by purging venal elements from the highly corrupt regime. To that purpose, he set up a special task force as the Kuomintang tottered toward the brink of a total economic collapse. His slogan was to “fight tigers not flies” in an effort to crack down on crooked big timers in the party. However, as his drive encroached on the interests of a former aide to First Lady Soong May-ling, also Chiang’s stepmother, it crumbled as the party suffered an utter rout at the hands of the Red Army.
