Nachdem am 27. 9. 1825 der erste Eisenbahnzug von Stockton nach Darlington (England) gedampft war, war zwar eine militärische Bedeutung dieses neuen Verkehrsmittels abzusehen, eine Umsetzung in die Praxis war jedoch erst möglich, nachdem sich in mehreren Staaten ein einigermaßen zusammenhängendes Streckennetz entwickelt hatte. Dabei wurden die Vorteile, die es für Truppen- und Nachschubtransporte bot, schon recht frühzeitig erkannt. Die Möglichkeiten, Eisenbahnfahrzeuge direkt als Waffe im Gefecht einzusetzen, brauchten eine längere Reifezeit. Zwar versahen die Österreicher bereits in den Revolutionskriegen 1848/49 Flachwagen mit Seitenwänden aus übereinandergelegten Eisenbahnschienen, die den darauf befindlichen Schützen Panzerschutz gewährten, und setzten diese Wagen sowohl bei der Belagerung Wiens wie in Ungarn und Oberitalien ein, zwar setzten im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg (1861-65) Nord- wie Südstaaten Geschütze auf Eisenbahnwagen, zwar hatten die Franzosen Ende der Sechziger Jahre bereits gepanzerte Infanteriewagen konstruiert, die sogar schon mit Mitrailleusen (dem Vorläufer des Maschinengewehrs) bestückt waren, jedoch im deutschfranzösischen Kriege (1870/71) nicht eingesetzt wurden — wohl aber im belagerten Paris gebaute, gegenüber denen des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs wesentlich verbesserte gepanzerte Eisenbahn-Batterien —, aber das Verdienst, den ersten, auch im heutigen Sinne richtiggehenden Panzerzug — der gekennzeichnet ist durch den Verbund von Infanterie und Artillerie — geschaffen zu haben, gebührt den Engländern.

The story of armored train "Smialy" is a remarkable one. ("Smialy", pronounced "Shmee-ah-we" in English, means „Brave"). Although armored trains were little used in western Europe, they were an important innovation in military technology in central and eastern Europe at the time of the First World War, and an alternative to tanks. "Smialy" provides a fine example of the history of such systems as it fought under four flags - Austrian, Polish, Soviet and German, in several wars from 1914 to 1945. Its story traces the rise and fall of armored trains in military history.

In der Geschichte geht es sehr oft recht kurios zu. So berichtete der Militärhistoriker DimitriWoIkogonow, daß Stalin 1921 über den damaligen Vorsitzenden des Revolutionären Kriegsrates Trotzki - also über den obersten Militärbefehlshaber - sehr empört war, weil der sich bei seinen häufigen Fahrten zur kämpfenden Truppe nicht nur mit einer großen Schar in Leder gekleideter junger Rotarmisten umgab, sondern sich auch noch häufig von zwei Panzerzügen begleiten ließ. Dieser Aufwand war für Stalin, der Trotzki ob seines Rednertalentes, seiner Energie und seiner Popularität ohnehin beneidete, eine Herausforderung. Damals konnte er noch nicht ahnen, daß er - der Flugreisen nicht ausstehen konnte - für seine Sicherheit während der Bahnfahrt zu der Potsdamer Konferenz im Juli 1945 auf der 1923 km langen Fahrstrecke -UdSSR 1095 km, Polen 594 km, Deutschland 234 km, acht Panzerzüge des NKWD aufbieten würde. Der Vollständigkeit halber sei hinzugefügt, daß auf jeden
Eisenbahnkilometer etwa sechs bis 15 Wachposten kamen. Insgesamt sicherte das NKWD die Strecke durch 11 Regimenter mit 17 000 Mann sowie 1515 Soldaten des operativen Personals. Es sei dahingestellt, ob Stalin ein besonderes persönliches Verhältnis zu diesen Stahlkolossen auf Schienen hatte, oder ob die Idee, die Strecke Moskau - Potsdam auf diese Weise zu sichern aus seiner Umgebung stammte. Tatsächlich kann man sagen, daß mit dieser Episode auch das Ende dieser Waffenart herangekommen war.

Po wybuchu rewolucji październikowej w 1917 r. w Rosji, na całym obszarze tego państwa zaczęły powstawać oddziały wojskowe walczące z bolszewikami. Polacy przebywający na terenie imperium rosyjskiego również przystąpili do tworzenia własnych formacji wojskowych. 25 stycznia 1919 r. powstała 5 Dywizja Strzelców Polskich w składzie trzech pułków piechoty, batalionu szturmowego, pułku ułanów, pułku artylerii, batalionu inżynieryjnego, służby sanitarnej i taborów - łącznie niemal 12 tys. żołnierzy. Na jej czele stanął płk Kazimierz Rumsza. Organizacyjnie Dywizja należała wraz z 4 Dywizją Strzelców Polskich gen. Lucjana Żeligowskiego (działającą na południu Rosji) do Armii Polskiej we Francji gen. Józefa Hallera.
Dywizja od samego początku przystąpiła do walki z oddziałami komunistycznymi, wspomagając rosyjskie wojska kontrrewolucyjne admirała Aleksandra Kołczaka, Korpus Czechosłowacki i wojska Ententy. Do jej głównych zadań należała ochrona strategicznie ważnej Kolei Transsyberyjskiej na prawie tysiąckilometrowym odcinku od Nowonikołajewska przez Aczyńsk, Krasnojarsk do stacji Klukwiennaja. W tym celu wykorzystywała cztery pociągi pancerne o nazwach: "Kraków", "Warszawa", "Poznań" i "Poznań II" (zdobyty na bolszewikach). W styczniu 1920 r., po nawiązaniu tajnych kontaktów między Korpusem Czechosłowackim i bolszewikami, 5 Dywizja Strzelców Polskich została otoczona i musiała skapitulować

In the last days of 1917, a fugitive Cossack captain brashly led seven cohorts into a mutinous garrison at Manchuli, a squalid bordertown on Russia's frontier with Manchuria. The garrison had gone Red, revolted against its officers, and become a dangerous, ill-disciplined mob. Nevertheless, Cossack Captain Grigori Semionov cleverly harangued the garrison into laying down its arms and boarding a train that carried it back into the Bolsheviks' tenuous territory. They undermined Admiral Kolchak's White armies, ruthlessly liquidated all Reds, terrorized the population, sold out to the Japanese, and antagonized the American Expeditionary Force and Czech Legion in a frenzied orchestration of the Russian Empire's gotterdammerung. Historians have long recognized that Ataman Semionov and Company were a nasty lot. This book details precisely how nasty they were.
White Terror describes the major events and trends during this dark era when Siberia became hell on earth. It offers a taste of daily life in the atamanshchina, and depicts the byzantine relationships and conflicts in a desolate land that suddenly teemed with warlords, Whites, Reds, Socialist-Revolutionaries, workers, peasants, refugees, prisoners, foreign troops and relief workers while describing the Cossacks ever-changing order of battle, key officers and armored trains. It's the story of a forgotten Russia in turmoil, when the line between government and organized crime blurred into a chaotic continuum of kleptocracy, vengeance and sadism.

Railroad guns are a very interesting part of the history of artillery development since the American Civil War. Modern technology has made these giant weapons obsolete, but for a number of years, in different conflicts, railway artillery played an important role in providing military forces with mobile heavy guns capable of breaching heavy fortifications or shelling strategic targets at long range. Movable coastal defense batteries were also used to supplement fixed defensive guns during invasions.
The railroad was the first development in transportation with the rise of the Machine Age, and allowed the movement of mounted heavy guns long before self-propelled carriages, engines, or roads existed. Railroad artillery was dependent on the availability of an extensive railway network for the greatest mobility--a disadvantage never entirely overcome-but in the later years of railroad gun development, this was offset to a great extent by the greater destructive effect of ever larger projectiles and by significant increases in maximum range, which often allowed large areas to be controlled by only a few guns. Characterized by relatively long barrels compared to other forms of artillery-many of these taken over from naval weapons production-and mounted on specially-modified or purpose-built railroad cars or carriages, the railroad guns proved to be excellent heavy artillery pieces, and were moved relatively easily despite their size.

One of the most important conflicts of the 20th century, the Russian Civil War was the struggle that led to the formation of the Soviet Union. Following the overthrow of the Russian Provisional Government on 7 November 1917, the All-Russian Congress of Soviets met and handed over power to the Soviet Council of People's Commissars. Immediately forces began to assemble in opposition to the Bolshevik regime, and these became known as the Whites. This title examines the armour that they had at their disposal throughout the course of the war. It was a varied collection including British and French vehicles and, perhaps most famously, the armoured trains that enabled the Whites to dominate much of Siberia.

British military locomotives are greatly displayed here. Information about light railroadin in details. And a little but interesting information about armour wagons and locomotives. This kind of information is really difficult to find in any other publishers.
