Journalism student Simon Tate thinks it's strange when four students at the university suddenly die in "unrelated" accidents. When his friend, Dr. Benjamin Roanic, becomes the prime suspect and is suddenly murdered, Simon sets out to prove his innocence. He soon discovers the students were Roanic's test subjects in a secret drug test program, and had been cured of AIDS. He is forced to run for his life, when a pharmaceutical company tries to prevent him from revealing the truth behind "Phase IV".

Na jednym z amerykańskich uniwersytetów doktor Benjamin Roniec (Brian Bosworth) dokonuje syntezy leku, który może stać się przełomem w leczeniu AIDS. Nie przypuszcza, że to odkrycie stanowi zagrożenie dla pewnego koncernu farmaceutycznego.
Nowy lek spowoduje spadek sprzedaży mało skutecznych specyfików, które zapewniają firmie astronomiczne dochody. Kiedy w tajemniczych okolicznościach ginie czterech studentów, którzy współpracowali z doktorem, na niego właśnie pada podejrzenie. Tylko jedna osoba, młoda dziennikarka Simon Tate (Mimi Kuzyk) nie wierzy w winę Ronieca. Prywatne śledztwo doprowadza ją do farmaceutycznego giganta. Doktor Roanic prowadzi badania nad nowym lekarstwem przeciw AIDS. Szef przedsiębiorstwa produkującego konkurencyjny, lecz dużo droższy medykament, zleca zabicie naukowca. Przed śmiercią Roanic przekazuje lek dawnemu przyjacielowi, Simonowi Tate'owi (Dean Cain). Ten - przekonany, że kolega padł ofiarą spisku - rozpoczyna prywatne śledztwo.
