this book consists of a series of case studies and essays illustrating clashes between the branches of the American government. The separation of power between the three branches of federal government, and between federal and state authority, allows each level of government to apply advantages unique to itself. The arrogation of power by a branch in a manner crossing over those divisions exposes the comparative disadvantages of the arrogating branch and calls for vigorous resistance by the branch upon which the encroachment has occurred. Such encroachments are more common than the comparative silence of the branches would indicate, as a result of which, comparative advantages of the branches have been distorted and lost.

At the early age of twelve the author was thoroughly indoctrinated into the Bolshevik ideology by two revolutionary missionaries who travelled on the same ship with him out to the Orient in 1907. Unlike many others he didn’t swallow the bait they offered him ‘Hook, Line, and Sinker’. He decided to keep an open mind, and to investigate matters thoroughly, before reaching any conclusions. His investigations and studies of all angles of the International Conspiracy have taken him to nearly every country in the world.

This is the best book to date about how the media covered the second Gulf War or maybe
miscovered the second war. Mr. Schecchter on a day to day basis analysed media coverage. He
found the most arresting, interesting , controversial, stupid reports and has got them all in this
book for an excellent assessment of the media performance of this war. He is very negative
about the media coverage and you read this book and you see why he is so negative about it. I
recommend it." – Peter Arnett

This book is unusual in bringing together the work of historians and political theorists under one cover to consider the subject of nineteenth- and twentieth-century dictatorships. A distinguished group of authors examine the complex relationship among nineteenth-century democracy, nationalism, and authoritarianism, paying special attention to the careers of Napoleon I and III and of Bismarck. An important contribution of the book is consideration not only of the momentous episodes of coup d’´etat, revolution, and imperial foundation that the Napoleonic era heralded, but also the contested political language with which these events were described and assessed. Political thinkers were faced with a battery of new terms – “Bonapartism,” “Caesarism,” and “Imperialism” among them – with which to make sense of their era.
In addition to documenting the political history of a revolutionary age, the book examines a series of thinkers – Tocqueville, Marx, Max Weber, Antonio Gramsci, Carl Schmitt, and Hannah Arendt – who articulated and helped to reshape our sense of the political.

Often dismissed aswindow dressing, nominally democratic institutions, such as legislatures and political parties, play an important role in nondemocratic regimes. In a comprehensive cross-national study of all nondemocratic states from 1946 to 2002 that examines the political uses of these institutions by dictators, Jennifer Gandhi finds that legislative and partisan institutions are an important component in the operation and survival of authoritarian regimes. She examines how and why these institutions are useful to dictatorships in maintaining power. In their efforts to neutralize threats to their power and to solicit cooperation from society, autocratic leaders use these institutions to organize concessions to potential opposition. The use of legislatures and parties to co-opt opposition results in significant institutional effects on policies and outcomes under dictatorship.
Jennifer Gandhi is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Emory University. She received her PhD in comparative politics and political economy from New York University in 2004. Her research interests include the political institutions dictators use to maintain power and the strategies the oppositionmay adopt in response. Her work has appeared in Economics and Politics and Comparative Political Studies.
