he history of English writing is, to a considerable extent, the history of instructional writing in English. This volume is the first collection of papers to focus on instructional writing throughout the history of the language. Spanning a millennium of English texts, the materials studied represent procedural and behavioural discourse in a variety of genres. The primary texts, from Ælfric’s homilies to medieval cooking recipes to seventeenth-century American conduct literature to present-day language textbooks, display a variety of linguistic devices typical of instruction. The materials nonetheless differ with respect to the explicitness of their instructive purpose. Bringing together a broad range of instructional writing from the Old, Middle and Modern English periods, this collection celebrates the sixtieth birthday of Risto Hiltunen, who has successfully combined discourse-linguistic approaches with the history of English in his research, and inspired the colleagues and former students contributing to this volume.

With over 1,000 entries, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms contains all of the most taxing literary terms that readers may come across. Clear and entertaining explanations are given for words such as multi-accentuality, postmodernism, and hypertext. The dictionary also provides extensive coverage of traditional drama, rhetoric, literary history, and textual criticism. This edition includes useful advice on further reading for particularly complex terms, as well as helpful pronunciation guides on over 200 terms.
Fully updated to include terms that have become prominent in literature in the last few years, from cyberpunk to antanaclasis, the Second Edition is ingeniously designed to tackle the less obvious terms that students and general readers will encounter.

Publisher: Routledge

Contemporary, philosophical, cultural, political and sociological influences have had a crucial impact on the way in which we approach and understand texts. Language, Literature and Critical Practice examines the major consequences of these influences on textual analysis and the role of language within it, and provides an overview of developments in language-centered criticism in the twentieth century.

Using a wide-ranging variety of texts, the author reviews and evaluates an equally wide-ranging variety of approaches to textual commentary, introducing the reader to the fundamental distinction between "actual" and "virtual" words in critical practice and theories of language, and elucidating the critically important practice of how texts mean.

Author: Northrop Frye
Publisher: Princeton University Press

Striking out at the conception of criticism as restricted to mere opinion or ritual gesture, Northrop Frye wrote this magisterial work proceeding on the assumption that criticism is a structure of thought and knowledge in its own right. In four brilliant essays on historical, ethical, archetypical, and rhetorical criticism, employing examples of world literature from ancient times to the present, Frye reconceived literary criticism as a total history rather than a linear progression through time.

Literature, Frye wrote, is "the place where our imaginations find the ideal that they try to pass on to belief and action, where they find the vision which is the source of both the dignity and the joy of life." And the critical study of literature provides a basic way "to produce, out of the society we have to live in, a vision of the society we want to live in."

Harold Bloom contributes a fascinating and highly personal preface that examines Frye's mode of criticism and thought (as opposed to Frye's criticism itself) as being indispensable in the modern literary world.

Author: David Lodge, Nigel Wood
Publisher: Longman; 2 edition

This new edition of David Lodge's Modern Criticism and Theory is fully revised and expanded to take account of the developments in theoretical contemporary literary criticism since the publication of the first edition in 1988. Building on the strengths of the first edition, this volume is designed to introduce the reader to the guiding concepts of present literary and cultural debate by presenting substantial extracts from the most seminal thinkers. As with the original edition there is a selection of the most important and representative work from the major schools in contemporary criticism.

Concise introductions with updated suggestions for further reading give a context for each essay and the editors have provided footnotes that help explain the most difficult references. Both students and general readers are encouraged to identify for themselves links between essays, as the selection is ordered both historically and thematically.

Author: Thomas Schmitz
Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell

“Thomas Schmitz’s book provides a clear, lively and intelligent guide through most major areas of modern literary theory and their application to the study of classical literature. It neatly identifies key theoretical texts and thinkers, and provides telling examples which lend colour and life to the impressive range of concepts discussed. He is refreshingly honest about his own prejudices and difficulties, while remaining even-handed and balanced in discussion; his presentation of the problems and objections faced by each theory is especially helpful. This excellent book has something to offer for every serious contemporary student of classical literature.”

A highly original work in history and theory, this survey considers major themes including identity, class and sexual difference, weaves them into debates on the nature and point of history, and arrives at new ways of doing history that very unusually consider non-Western history and feminist approaches. Using wide range of historical and cultural contexts, the study draws extensively on feminist scholarship, both feminist history and postcolonial feminism.

At a time when postmodernism seems to have achieved a dominant position in cultural and critical theory the contributors to this volume provide a much needed corrective to the misleading images of modernism which have dominated recent debate. Richard Sheppard's account of European modernism focuses on the profound ideological crisis which beset Western culture between 1890 and 1930 and examines the ways in which artists and intellectuals responded to it; Bernard McGuirk analyses the ambivalent reactions of Apollinaire and Alberti to the machine age; David Wragg investigates the aesthetic and epistemological underpinnings of verbal and visual Vorticism in the work of Wyndham Lewis and Mike Johnson considers the potential for a (post)modernist political aesthetic in the Merz texts of Kurt Schwitters. And finally Steve Giles Afterword provides a much needed overview of the relationship between modernism and the avant-garde, postmodernism and modernity. This volume makes an important contribution to our understanding of modernism and through the use of contemporary critical theory sheds new light on current controversies surrounding postmodernism. It will be essential reading for all those interested in critical theory, cultural studies and comparative literature.

Key Concepts in Literary Theory provides authoritative and precise definitions of the most significant terms and concepts currently used in psychoanalytic, poststructuralist, Marxist, feminist, and postcolonial literary studies. The volume also presents clear discussions of the main areas of literary, critical, and cultural theory, supported by bibliographies and a chronology of major thinkers. Accompanying the chronology are short biographies of major works by each critic or theorist.

This revised edition of this comprehensive reference includes definition for more than seventy new terms and concepts, from Absurdism and Aga Saga to Writerly texts and Zeugma; a broader selection of classical rhetorical terms; an expanded chronology with a wider historical and cultural range, from Immanuel Kant to G.W.F. Hegel and bell hooks; and richer bibliographies including key texts by major critics.
