Maps between the scales 1:2.000 and 1:250.000

Since 2015, we have archived over 250.000 maps of the Caribbean, Central and South America; Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East; Central, South and East Asia; Australasia; and the islands of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

Most of these maps are topographic, between the scales of 1:25.000 and 1:100.000.

In other words, they depict height through contour lines, and take between one and four centimetres to depict one kilometre on the ground.

Where possible, each map is archived in consecutive editions, so that you can analyse changes in land use from 1945 to the present. Within the Americas, many of these editions were published by an "Instituto Geográfico Nacional", and the Inter-American Geodetic Survey.

(1) A national edition shows nothing beyond the country's borders. A map published in 1955, could remain in copyright until 2035, in that country.
(2) A United States edition shows information over the whole area of the sheet. They are not subject to copyright protection under Title 17 of the United States Code.

We can only distribute maps where exemptions to copyright apply for research and teaching, or where the maps are no longer within copyright in the country of publication. You may only download them where lawful.

Map indexes between the scales of 1:50.000 and 1:250.000

You can download them for free, and use and redistribute them freely.
For many countries, these are the only indices available to the general public.

Do not, however, use them for navigation, because the background air charts were mostly compiled in the 1970s. If you need an up-to-date air chart, please refer to section 3.2 of the country's AIP for an official recommendation.

Self service

There are two public folders, from which you can download map indices and preview maps for free.

International maps for maps and indices organised on the International Map of the World (IMW).
National maps for maps and indices organised to cover all, or parts, of a country.

You will, however, need a Chomikuj account to download the actual maps.
